Good: Smooth service, not too much beffering
Bad: No search facility!!!!!!! No amazon Instant Videos!!!!!!
Comment: A good system let down massively by having no search facility in the UK! It has it in the US, but they clearly do not care that much about the UK market; typical Americans.
You also cannot get Amazon Instant Video's in the UK, which I now get free with Amazon Prime (for the rest of my contract anyway), unlike US customers. Again, this is just how US companies treat the British.
Roku's web site does not mention the above issues at all!!! They let us buy the product & then find out what is missing in the UK; very poor customer service - probably also a violation of the Trade Descriptions Act. In the future, buy non-American.
Good: Fast, quiet, compact and brilliantly functional
Bad: Access to LoveFilm and ITV player would be good
Comment: This little box has the potential to let you do away with Sky or Virgin, get rid of your PVR, and (with Netflix) stop you having to buy DVDs or Blueray discs. It plays in the highest resolution available, and is very fast and crisp in operation.
Good: Small and Compact
Bad: Needs credit card or Paypal account to set up
Comment: i bought this after pondering a purchase for a few weeks. it's great for Netflix and superb for Plex
One thing i did not buy this for is free channels and iplayer etc. This is not a freeview HD box so if you one one of them, go get one!
Pic quality is great on this box, but from what i can tell there is no way to control the volume of the tv from this Box. Roku have missed out by not doing this. Price wise it's not bad at £79, but i feel it be better at the £50 mark. Still the best box of this type on the market.
Bad: Unnessesary need for access to your cash!
Comment: ""you have to hand over payment details to create an account -- either a credit card or Paypal account""
INSTANT DEAL BREAKER!! People must be mad to accept these terms to stream free content from BBC etc, or access content paid for separately..
Comment: An update to my original review on this site, After installing Plex and the addition of Youtube as well as other Quality Channels - Ive revised my rating to 4.5 stars.
Good: The quality of Netflix
Bad: No 4OD or ITV player
Comment: I received my Roku 3 today and have been very impressed with the video quality on Netflix. It's better than the quality I get on my PC screen - very crisp. I recently tried LoveFilm and Netflix and gave up on LoveFilm very quickly, struggling to find anything I wanted to watch. Netflix by comparison has a huge catalogue with lots of episodes of TV programs. I've got a not-so-old Sony Blu Ray player and TV in the bedroom and neither device runs Netflix, so the Roku has been a blessing.
Good: Simple to use once set up
Bad: Roku forgot to mention they omitted the search function for the UK
Comment: I read several reviews on line before buying one of these direct from Roku last week. It was only when I got it set up and started to use it that I found out that the widely praised search function I had read about on the reviews was missing from my screen menu. I contacted Roku straight away and was told this search feature is only available in the US and nowhere else in the rest of the world at the moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment: I love how everyone says that the Roku have no local streaming support when there is a channel that will allow this. Plex will make the Roku box 1000000000 times better and gives access to a ton more channels and content. To the reviewer above me install Plex and you will be a happy bunny.
Good: Its Small and easy to hide
Bad: Everything else
Comment: I wish I had read the CNET review before buying, I got mine last week after reading 'other' reviews. This device has a huge number of channels - 99% of them are Trash with very old films and most of those are duplicates from other channels, none of the Good Movie channels other than Netflix & Sky are available, exciting stuff is on the Horizon if you live in the States (I live in the U.K). Dont waste your money on one. Speaking to Roku about my concerns met with the following response "For any channels you would like added, it may be an option if you contact the companies yourself and ask them to partner up with Roku....."
