Good: Easy to plug in and go.

Bad: Nothing much

Comment: Having battled with a Thomson PVR, I guess that any product that actually works without hassle would please me. Intuitive to use, does exactly what it should - a pleasure to own.

Good: Recording, Series Link, Picture Quality, Everything

Bad: Interface

Comment: After reading a negative review I wanted to comment and disagree. The picture quality from the Humax both live and recorded is amazing. The flexibility in recording preferences, series linking are great and generally the entire experience of the humax has been nothing but good. I would comment that the interface could use a little work but in reality after a few days you're used to it and it makes no odds to the overall use of the device. If you want a great freeview receiver with amazing recording abilities then get it.

Good: Never misses a programme

Bad: Slow EPG update

Comment: After running with Sky and a DVD recorder this is fantastic, it is slow in gathering all the programme data but I turn it on before I need the EPG and then a full week or more is loaded when I want it. The picture is excellent, the logic simple to use, it is a joy to own and use, it's a pity there are not more good TV programmes to watch with it.

Good: Hard to say as it did not work satisfactorily at any time

Bad: Unreliable machine and poor service from Humax

Comment: I bought the Humax online- a mistake in more than one way! The machine crashed several times on the first day and things only got worse. It could not be used rfor recording becuase most of the time it would crash while the programme to be recorded was on air. Humax service have to be contacted through a premium phone line, although subsequent information exchange was by email. Humax just gave instructions for rebooting in ever more complicated ways. They did not fix the problem. After a couple of months no image at all was visible on the television via the Humax. I am still waiting for the machine to be repaced or repaired, but I am not happy because it was faulty from the time it came out of the box. If you really must buy one, do so through a high street retailer who will replace the oproducty if is faulty.

Good: Easy to use, near perfect recording quality, and you CAN archive to a PC. (But also see what I don't like!)

Bad: USB transfer to a PC is very unreliable and, when it does work, is slow, transferring at approx 5% of expected speed. This is its only major disappointment. But most other machines don't even offer this option.

Comment: Bought December 2006 and very, very pleased I did.

It's a tribute to the intrinsic quality of this recorder that it was available for at least a year before I purchased, is STILL an extremely popular machine and is likely to live on for at least another year. That is extremely unusual in the world of electronics

Part of the reason for its longevity is that there is still, IMO, nothing better on the market. The other part is because its software is updated from time to time, either Over The Air, or by download from Humax using a PC. Updated software has brought many usability improvements and has ironed out of most silly little annoyances.

This PVR would be close to perfect (and a score of 9-10) if ONLY Humax could improve the USB transfer to PC. This one aspect is flaky - transfer often fails and is very slow (1/20 of USB2 speeds). Why does ability to transfer to a PC matter? Because offloading recordings makes your capacity for archiving almost limitless - you are no longer dependent on the PVR's own hard disk drive capacity.

It is very easy to use and does most anything you might reasonably ask of it. Styling is a matter of personal taste - mine is silver and I like it.

Remote control handset is also a matter of personal taste. Some people think Humax's is a bit big. It is, but I like that because it doesn't get lost so easily, is actually very easy to operate and its sensibly spaced buttons have a nice responsive feel. (many remotes do not). At first, some remote button positioning seems slightly quirky. But you get used to this remarkably quickly and then wonder what you were grumbling about! Similarly, some buttons hide under a sliding cover - but the plus side is that it protects their labelling and prevents accidental presses.

I cannot over-emphasize how important it is to have two tuners, which Humax has, but many do not, including all DVD recorders (as opposed to PVRs). A single tuner machine is a crippled machine. Avoid those like the plague!

Another small point - this PVR's own display can be read from several feet away - unlike some rather well known recorders whose stupidly small and dim displays require you sit so close to them for legibility that you wonder why you bothered to pay for a remote control at all!

Mine has been 100% reliable and is close to top of the most satisfying purchases I have ever made. If Humax fix that USB glitch, it will unquestionably BE top.

It's worth mentioning that there is very helpful (independent) Humax specific Forum at
http://www.hummy.org.uk if you wish to discuss details, ask questions etc.

Good: Never miss any show ever again. Or watch pointless ads.

Bad: Due to programming shifts can sometimes miss the last two minutes of a programme leaving you feeling cheated.

Comment: This product will revolutionise your television viewing. It is dead easy to use and has plenty of space for recordings. The add fast forward button is great, as is the ability to record on a weekly/daily basis.

Cons? Missing end of programmes (although this is supposed to have been sorted with the new software - just need to update mine!)
No series record option.
Thats it!

Overall a fantastic product that changes the way you watch tv.

Good: Ease of Use, Quick Recording, Good Picture Quality

Bad: EPG, Record / Playback issue

Comment: Bought 10/11/2007, set up was very simple and straight-forward. Delighted with the ease of use and how quick it will record on-demand, so much nicer than my Liteon DVD Recorded. However after just 7 days, I noticed that the screen keep going black for a split second, sometimes once and sometimes five or six times in a row. I went back to the TV and found nothing wrong with the same program. This problem was watching TV via the box and also on any recorded programs on any channel. Very disappointed with this issue, on an otherwise nice machine, also its a 60 mile round trip back to the shop.
