Sony Bravia Z5800 (KDL-40Z5800)

The first telly from Sony to sport a built-in freesat tuner, the 40-inch, 1080p KDL-40Z5800 LCD TV is also one of the company's finest-performing sets. It's expensive and its audio isn't all it could be, but its pictures are generally fantastic and it looks very cool

Toshiba Regza SV (46SV685DB)

The 46-inch, 1080p, LED-backlit Regza 46SV685DB is Toshiba's best flat-screen TV to date. Its pictures are superbly sharp, detailed and colourful, and it produces dark scenes with a depth and naturalism that no ordinary LCD TV can match. It doesn't come cheaply, though

Sony Bravia ZX1 (KDL-40ZX1)

The 40-inch Sony Bravia KDL-40ZX1 LCD TV with LED edge lights looks stunning and is remarkably thin. Also capable of receiving a 1080i signal wirelessly -- which means less cable clutter -- it's a good choice if you want a TV whose mere appearance will make your friends insanely jealous

LG SL8000 (42SL8000)

The strikingly slim, 42-inch, 1080p 42SL8000 is the best LG LCD TV we've seen so far. It's packed to bursting point with features and connections, its pictures are great 99 per cent of the time, and it looks beautiful. For the price, it's also remarkably good value

Sharp Aquos LE700 (LC46LE700E)

The 46-inch, 1080p, LED-backlit Aquos LC46LE700E LCD TV offers plenty of features for the price and is capable of delivering some spectacular images. Its motion-handling capability could be better, but its black-level response is frequently excellent and its colours are exceptionally vivid

Packing plenty of picture-processing chops, the 42-inch, 1080p Regza 42ZV635DB's motion-handling capability is the best we've seen so far on a Toshiba LCD TV. The set's black levels could be better, but it offers an opulent design, good connectivity and a great deal of picture flexibility

LG LH3000 (47LH3000)

We weren't expecting much from the 47-inch, 1080p 47LH3000 LCD TV, since it bears a startlingly low price tag. But it confounded our expectations at every turn, offering striking pictures, excellent menus and an attractive design. This set is a real bargain

Sharp Aquos LE600 (LC40LE600E)

The 1080p, 40-inch Aquos LC40LE600E is remarkably affordable for an LED-backlit LCD TV. While Sharp's cut a few corners to keep the price down, the set looks great and its pictures are often blisteringly intense, without any of LED backlighting's usual unpleasant side effects

Despite a rather dour exterior, the 1080p, 46-inch Bravia KDL-46W5500 is a fantastic LCD TV. Its images are nothing short of sensational, it offers good connectivity and multimedia functionality, and, compared to other Bravia sets, it's surprisingly affordable too

The 1080p, 42-inch Regza 42RV635DB LCD TV is definitive proof that you can get a good set without needing to sell a kidney. It might not be the most exciting machine on the market, but its excellent Freeview and high-definition performance make it extremely likeable

The 46-inch, 1080p, LED-edge-lit UE46B8000 is fantastically thin, offers excellent picture quality and is packed full of useful and entertaining features. It's pricey and there are some patchiness issues with the backlight on rare occasions, but this is a remarkable set

Representing LG's first entry into the freesat TV market, the 42-inch 42LF7700 LCD TV with a 1080p resolution is an admirable effort at a reasonable price. Boasting a seriously attractive design, it also offers hugely watchable pictures, although its black-level response is slightly disappointing

Loewe Art SL 42 Full-HD+ 100 DR+

If you discount its ridiculous name, the 42-inch, 1080p Art SL 42 Full-HD+ 100 DR+ LCD TV has plenty going for it. It's attractive, boasts good picture and sound quality, and offers more configuration options than you can shake a stick at. The real question is whether you're willing to spend over £3,000 on a TV

The 40-inch, 1080p UE40B7000WW with LED edge lights is a truly magnificent TV. Not only does it boast a remarkably thin design and wonderful picture quality but it's got good online functionality and impressive built-in speakers. We were also delighted to see it can play MKV files -- a real boon

Philips Essence 42PES0001D

The 42-inch, 1080p Essence 42PES0001D LCD TV is one of the best Philips sets we've seen. Design-wise, this amazingly thin TV is a marvel, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a set that's easier to hang on the wall. Most importantly, picture quality is spectacular, and audio quality, via the separate speaker bar, isn't bad either
