In spite of the embarrassing acronym, the Pioneer Kuro KRP-500A is a very high-end TV, aimed squarely at the home-cinema enthusiast. With all its inputs and media gubbins in a separate box, it's incredibly thin for such a large panel -- and its picture is magnificent, as you'd expect for such a high price

Pioneer Kuro PDP-LX5090

If you have the money to burn, this TV is as good as it gets for home entertainment -- unless you want to go the projection route. Its blacks are unparalleled, especially in HD, and Blu-ray looks just as fantastic on the 1080p screen. Watch out for Pioneer's unusual approach to inputs, though

Pioneer Kuro PDP-LX6090

Not only does the Pioneer Kuro PDP-LX6090 deliver a colossal 60 inches of screen, it also displays picture quality that's nothing short of amazing. You'll need deep pockets to afford it, but its attention to detail with black levels and colour reproduction put this plasma TV in a league of its own

The Samsung PS-63P76FD is a whopper of a TV at 63 inches, but all for a great value. This 'Full HD' set produces excellent black levels that give dark scenes great realism and colours are rich and natural. Audio is pretty potent, too and the TV has connections galore

The Panasonic TH-10PF is an absolutely huge plasma screen -- 103 inches. Very few will be able to afford it, but for the hi-def jet set it's a great alternative to buying a projector for a home cinema, with excellent picture quality, natural black levels, pleasing brightness and good contrast

Due to its £6,000 price tag, the Pioneer PDP-5000EX is intended for home cinema fanatics. Its 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution makes it one of only a very select group of plasma screens able to show 1080p high definition, and with two HDMI sockets and one component video input, it's certainly got the potential to be a hub for several hi-def devices

LG 50PY2R

LG has upped the ante with this 50-inch plasma, but the 50PY2R isn't just a super-size screen. It's affordable, and combines a solid design with brilliant performance -- for such a large screen, pictures are surprisingly clean with only the occasional colour gradation causing it any problems. It is somewhat lacking in connectivity, though

The P42HTS40's separate media box means it can handle masses of connectivity and in this respect, it's a benchmark plasma, despite Fujitsu leaving a nasty taste in the mouth by omitting speakers and not having an internal digital TV tuner

NEC 42XR3

The 42XR3 is the smaller brother of one of our favourite plasmas, the 61XR3. The 42XR3 is still more expensive than most at this size, but the performance will win over anyone who has picture quality high on their list of priorities. There's no Freeview tuner or RGB Scart input though, so you'll have to wait for HD content to make the most of it

Loewe Xelos A42

Loewe's latest 42-inch plasma offers a classy design, powerful sound and good connectivity for a reasonable price, but be warned -- you'll need a PhD in television repair to operate the menu system
