Typical price: £2,000
What is it: 'Full HD' 50-inch plasma TV with a built-in 250GB hard disk recorder
What we think: A merely solid performer, but its price and built-in hard disk recording help it stand out from the crowd

"Fundamentally flawed"
What I like:
The trim plus the rotating stand
What I don't like:
virtually Un-useable A/V in/Outputs for audio devices
Review:
I bought this TV in February 08 and since then have had Hitachi service people involved as well as the retailer with a problem relating to a severe echo/delay in any of the A/V inputs.
1st item was a portable DVD player that we've used on all our other TV sets. But when we plug it into the Hitachi P50XR01U, because of a very bad echo/delay from the TV's internal speakers the DVD is unuseable.
When I plug a karaoke machine into the TV with a view to useing the internal speakers, I get the same delay/echo.
The problem arrises on the DVD player when I need to turn up the volume on the player to drive the volume on the TV, the audio on the DVD player is real time but the audio on the TV output is delayed, so much so that it's unusable.
Even when not useing external input devices but running the TV audio from the TV to an external theatre system (amplifier + speakers), the same thing, I can't listen to it because of the echo/delay. I thought Hitachi would be a little sympathetic to my plight but they're having none of it, they have sold the TV got the money and I think as far as they are concerened, that is that. Hitach (when you can contact them) pass you on from one authorised repairer to another when in fact none of them are trained in such an advanced computer controlled TV. I wouldn't buy this TV again, nor would I reccommend it to anyone. In fact unless this gets sorted I would stay clear of thinking that Hitach are interested in after sales support.
The picture (I'm no expert on this) seems to dwell and what I mean about this, if there's a guy sat in one position (like a news reader) for a while, and then he moves quickly, his image remains in the same place until the picture sort of catches up to him. Poor show all around I'd say.
Stay claer of this model and consider Hitachi's response to people's complaints when considering ANY Hitachi model..

TiVo to make triumphant return to UK with Virgin Media
You might think you know what a PVR is, but in the UK we're really stuck in the past with our digital recording antics. Happily, Virgin Media is bringing TiVo back
