It wasn't so long ago that a 1080p TV would have cost you quite a bit more than £1000. But these days, Samsung is proving that you can get your hands on a pretty well speced full HD TV for less than a grand, in fact, less than £800 if you shop around.
The LE40M87 is a pretty nice looking TV too, it certainly won't shout "cheapskate" from the corner of your lounge and embarrass you during dinner parties. It has the traditional Samsung rounded corners and piano black finish.
Of course, it's no slouch when it comes to features either. There are three HDMI sockets, a pair of SCART sockets and component in. The TV also has a gaming mode, for console and PC inputs.
This TV isn't perfect though. We don't like the remote control, the styling is rubbish and the TV just doesn't respond as quickly as we'd like. During our testing, we'd often find ourselves pushing the keys harder to make the TV respond quicker. But unfortunately, the laws of physics were unaffected, and we found ourselves getting frustrated.
The sound was also slightly weak too. There is nothing wrong with the quality, we just don't think the TV is really loud enough, and it certainly lacks any meaningful bass.
We'd also say once again that Samsung TVs are still set up badly when you take them out of the box. When you get yours delivered -- IF you decide to buy one, you should make sure you spend a bit of time adjusting the controls. Particularly important is reducing the backlight to a suitable level. This will also ensure your TV lasts a little longer too.
Overall, this is an excellent low-cost entry to the full HD market. If you're a gamer, or own an HD DVD or Blu-ray player capable of 1080p out, this screen will make the most of it.
If you want a 1080p screen at a remarkably low price, this is probably the TV for you. It's a good performer and beautifully designed. It has a few annoying quirks, but it's a solid LCD television
