Typical price: £2,280
What is it: 50-inch 1080p plasma television
What we think: Picture quality is brilliant on everything you throw at it and it blows the competition away in HD, especially on dark scenes

We like:
Picture quality; remote control
We don't like:
Expensive; power-hungry; mastering the inputs is tricky
Also known as:
Kuro 50; Kuro 5090; LX5090
You might also need:
Bottom-mounted PDP-S63 speakers or side-mounted PDP-S62 speakers, both around £100; stand (PDK-TS33A for bottom-mounted speakers or KRP-TS02 for side-mounted speakers), around £100; Blu-ray player; hi-def TV service from Sky, Virgin or Freesat; hi-def games console
CNET UK judgement:
If you've got the money, don't think twice -- this TV is as good as it gets and you won't regret buying one for even a second. The only problem is that it'll cost you another fortune in Blu-ray discs and HD TV subscriptions

Black Thursday: Pioneer to stop making TVs
On the one hand, we like Thursday, it's a day of cake and the weekend is close enough to reach out and touch. This Thursday, however, has brought nothing but abject misery and disappointment
