Manufacturers tell us that £1,000 is the magic number for people thinking about upgrading their living-room technology.
Although you could spend £1,000 on a TV alone, if you're prepared to get a smaller screen, you can get a lot more for your grand. We've put together the ideal package to enhance your viewing experience.
We've included a 32-inch television, which is easily big enough for most British living rooms. There's an upscaling Denon DVD player, which will help you get the best out of your DVD collection, and doesn't require you to buy your favourite films all over again on a next-generation disc format.
We've also suggested a Slingbox, so you can watch your favourite TV shows from anywhere in the world, via a PC, or even a mobile phone.
The final piece of kit on our shopping list is a PVR. But not just any hard-disk-based recorder will do -- we've selected one of the best on the market, a Humax 9200-T. The Humax makes the grade because the company has continually added new features via over-the-air updates.

| Review summary | If you're looking for a sensibly sized screen, possibly for gaming, this offers everything you'll need plus more. Once you've fiddled with the picture settings, the hi-def picture quality is good, and Freeview performance is decent too. Read full review Full specification |
Historically, telly buffs have had to actually sit in front of their home TV to watch it. The Slingbox changes that, allowing you not only to control your TV from a remote location, but also to watch it anywhere at any time. It serves its purpose perfectly and can be recommended without a moment's hesitation Read full review Full specification |
Denon's DVD-1930 features video upscaling using all hi-def resolutions, including the latest 1080p signals. It's ideal if you want to improve the performance of your existing DVDs without spending too much on a next-generation player Read full review Full specification |
The Humax PVR-9200T is the Rolls Royce of Freeview recording, with every feature we could possibly ask of a recorder in addition to a massive hard drive. It's a winner against Panasonic's recorder on price, plus it's pure simplicity to use. If you need a recorder suited to the demands of a power user and the rest of the family, this is it Read full review Full specification |
