There's no doubt about it: 32-inch TVs are incredibly useful. For people who aren't very interested in the latest whizz-bang technology, they're a good choice for a set that sits in the corner and shows EastEnders when required. For people with small homes, they're ideal because their diminutive depth and screen size means they can fit into all but the smallest of spaces. And, for the AV nut, they make great bedroom TVs, since they're not so small as to be annoying and not so large as to start a marital argument.
There was a time, as recently as last year, when 32-inch TVs were only 720p, HD Ready affairs. Happily, that's more or less all changed now, with most new 32-inch LCD TVs from big-name brands sporting a 1080p resolution. This is great news for fans of high definition in general, but it's also a coup for gamers who like the increased resolution that this can bring to the current crop of HD games consoles.
You can spend a fair amount of money on your new 32-inch TV. The most expensive in this round-up costs over £2,000, but at least has the decency to also act as a full media streamer and Freeview PVR. Just because you want a smaller TV doesn't mean you want it to be devoid of features.
At the bargain-basement end of the market, there's also plenty of choice. Toshiba's excellent Regza 32RV635DB won an Editors' Choice award for being a very capable 1080p TV with a price tag that puts it in competition with no-name supermarket brands. You can get the 32RV635DB for around £500. We think that's the steal of the century.
As always, there's a world of choice out there. If you want to look at other TVs in this size range with 1080p performance, take a look at the reviews search engine for more suggestions.

| Review summary | While the LE32B650 lacks some of the glamour and can't quite match the picture quality of Samsung's LED-backlit LCD TVs, it's still beautifully designed, feature-rich and one of the best 32-inch performers around. Offering premium picture thrills for a distinctly mid-range price, only its uninspiring audio stops it scoring a higher mark Read full review |
The Toshiba Regza 32RV635DB is a really likeable TV for a fairly sensible price. A 1080p resolution is totally unnecessary on a 32-inch TV, but that's hardly an issue when you aren't paying through the nose for it. This TV will appeal to PlayStation 3 owners who want 1080p gaming, and probably to Blu-ray fans who don't have room for a larger TV. We also think the simple remote with large buttons makes this a good choice for older people or those who don't aren't technically inclined Read full review |
With the online functionality of most TVs currently leaving us underwhelmed, it's really great to find the Philips 32PFL9604H giving us the surfing freedom we crave. But significant though the 32PFL9604H's online features are, it's ultimately the TV's stunning picture quality that really inspires Read full review |
This is one of the best 32-inch TVs we've ever used. If it wasn't for the enormous price tag, we would have no problem recommending it to everyone. The problem is, for most people the price is just far too high -- you could almost get a 50-inch Pioneer plasma for the sort of money Loewe is asking Read full review |
