LG SL8000 (42SL8000)
LG has long been doing very well indeed in the UK TV market, thanks to some ultra-aggressive pricing. With the 42SL8000, the company has finally proven definitively that it's not only a budget brand, but one that's capable of producing LCD pictures to rival the best of the competition
Panasonic Viera TX-P42S10
If you want high-quality pictures, the Panasonic Viera TX-P42S10 won't disappoint. We really like everything about this TV -- Blu-ray movies look stunning, Freeview is handled well and the configuration options are simple but still cover the important areas. The only thing we don't like is what isn't on the TV -- media playback support for popular Internet formats would be a good addition, and we'd love to see Viera Cast on these mid-range screens
Sharp Aquos LE700 (LC46LE700E)
Adding 100Hz processing into the mix, Sharp's Aquos LC46LE700E certainly improves on the cheaper Aquos LC40LE600E's already good picture quality, at least as far as standard-definition material is concerned. It's just a shame the improvements aren't more pronounced
Samsung UE46B8000
The UE46B8000 is another stunning TV from Samsung. There are so many things about this TV that we adore. The picture quality is epic, the design is a thing of beauty and the extra features are both useful and fun. We noticed that the backlight did give rise to some patchiness, although this is only really a problem with pure-black pictures. Overall, it's a pricey but remarkable TV. Do consider the slightly cheaper B7000 range if this is above your financial comfort zone
Samsung UE40B7000WW
The Samsung UE40B7000WW is truly wonderful. While we still think plasma TVs have the edge, the UE40B7000WW shows that Samsung is turning sets with LED edge lights into real competitors. We're big fans of the TV's Yahoo Widgets and media-playback capability, and were blown away by the set's ability to play MKV files -- this is truly brilliant, and we're very excited to see a TV with this functionality built in
Sony Bravia W5500 (KDL-46W5500)
For those who can't afford one of Sony's exceptional X4500 LED-backlit TVs, the fantastic functionality and performance of the surprisingly affordable Bravia KDL-46W5500 should do the trick. It's just a shame that Sony's online system isn't as good as those of its rivals
Panasonic Viera V10 (TX-P58V10)
With Pioneer on the verge of disappearing from the UK TV scene, it's a real relief to find a set like the fantastic Panasonic Viera TX-P58V10. It proves that, even after the death of Pioneer tellies, movie buffs will still be able to get their hands on supremely high-quality plasma alternatives to the latest LCD and LED-backlit upstarts
Philips 7000 (32PFL7404H/12)
With Philips' 9000-series TVs causing such a stir, we were concerned that the lower-spec 32PFL7404H/12 would feel disappointingly stripped-down. But, despite being considerably cheaper, it still delivers a real flavour of the picture-processing power that's currently Philips' hallmark
Philips 9000 (37PFL9604H/12)
It may be expensive but everything about the Philips 37PFL9604H/12 -- from its metallic bodywork and impressive connectivity to its innumerable features and sublime pictures -- screams quality
Panasonic Viera TX-P42G15
With exceptional picture quality and a stunning feature set, the Panasonic Viera TX-P42G15 really is a top-notch plasma TV. It might be pricy but we think it's worth every penny
