CCD (charged-coupled device)
The 'film' in digital still cameras and camcorders, the CCD is a chip with an array of sensors that absorb light and convert the intensity of the light to electrical signals. Those signals are then sent to an analogue-to-digital converter, which turns them into computer-readable bits.
