alpha channel
In computer graphics, each pixel has three channels of colour information -- red, green, and blue -- in various bit depths. With 24-bit graphics, there are 8 bits per colour per pixel. With 32-bit graphics, the additional 8 bits are used as an alpha channel to control attributes for the other 24 bits of colour. One such type of control is alpha blending.
