It's a tough Christmas, but someone's got to do it
I hate Christmas. Oh, I'm not some kind of warped Scrooge figure; I hate all public holidays equally. Halloween, New Year's Eve, bank holidays, all of them. The costumes; the enforced jollity; the shops being too busy one minute and shut the next, even though it's a perfectly good Tuesday; paying fifteen quid to not be able to get a seat in the pub you sit in every night...
There are some upsides, however. For journalists it's possible to get smashed throughout the festive period without putting your hand in your pocket once, thanks to the wonder of the PR party free bar. This sounds great at first -- and everybody's entitled to go full-pelt their first Christmas in the industry -- but is less appealing when you consider that such parties are full of journalists.
They're strange beasts, PR events. As a site that covers a broad range of technology, your intrepid Cravers get to take down brews at a wide range of launches, events and parties. Just this week I attended the launch of the Nikon D3X, where, while I nibbled on a canapé breakfast, I was treated to one of the most postmodern sights I'd ever seen.
In the studio set up for us to test the camera, a hack put the camera through its paces. A Nikon cameraman then filmed the guy taking the photograph. Another photographer then snapped the guy filming the guy taking the photograph. Now, by blogging about the photographer photographing the guy filming the guy taking the photograph, I've caused the universe to fold it on itself and leave only a smoking crater of dark meta where my desk used to be.
Anyway, must run, I'm being taken out to lunch. A boy's got to eat!
