PicLens is pick of the week

There's been some debate recently about the relative benefits of Firefox here at CNET.co.uk. As newer versions of Firefox slow to the crawling pace of an England attack down the left, certain embittered hacks have switched over to Opera.

While I like the speed-dial and fast-forward features of Opera (and at home I've had to resort to, of all things, Safari, as Firefox beachballs my steampowered iMac every seven seconds), there's one thing that secures Firefox's reign: extensions.

The latest extension I've swooned over is called PicLens, and it's brought to you by the people behind Cooliris. Cooliris allows you to preview links in a mini-window and is rather love-it-or-hate-it. PicLens is definitely love. The extension places a tiny 'play' symbol in the corner of every picture. Click on the icon and the picture expands to full screen, with a scrolling thumbnail strip beneath.

PicLens detects whether the image is part of a gallery, as on Facebook or Flickr. Click on the first image on a page, and you can tab through all the pictures. And that is why PicLens is my pick of the week.
