See the big picture with a 19 or 20-inch monitor

A 19-inch monitor might not sound much bigger than a 17-inch model, but you'll notice the difference. The extra screen real estate is particularly useful for graphics and video-editing programs, which often have multiple control palettes that need to be arranged on your screen.

Look for a model that's adjustable in height and angle. A swivel base is also useful -- it enables you to twist the screen around and show your work to passers-by. Finally, make sure you have plenty of controls for tweaking the brightness, contrast and colour, so you can adjust the image to suit your lighting conditions.
