HTC Hero
If you can stand the Hero's occasional sluggishness, it's a fantastic smart phone packed with great features. We like its distinctive looks, and the innovative user interface brings Android much closer to being as fun and good-looking as the iPhone OS, while being far more customisable. Occasional lag and Android's rough edges mean it's not quite an iPhone killer, but it's definitely fighting in the same class
Sony Ericsson Satio
Sony Ericsson's do-everything media phone pumps out fabulous pictures and great sound, but, due to an irritating user interface, unresponsive touchscreen and proprietary headphone jack, the Satio's just no fun to use
Samsung Tocco Lite
The Samsung Tocco Lite does a good job of scaling down touchscreen tech to fit in a pocket-sized, bargain-basement phone. A bright, responsive touchscreen ensures that basics like dialling and texting pose no problems, and the 3.2-megapixel camera is decent too. But, without 3G, the Lite doesn't so much surf as paddle the Web
LG KU990 Viewty
This is one of LG's best phones yet. If you're looking for a good camera phone the LG Viewty is definitely worth checking out. From the vibrating touchscreen interface to the YouTube video capabilities and photo-editing app, we liked what it had to offer and think you will too
Apple iPhone 3GS
Apple has put the icing on the cake with the iPhone 3G S, adding many of the smaller features that we missed on the previous model. It's not a huge change from the iPhone 3G, so look carefully at the hardware before upgrading or investing in this expensive phone, but it won't disappoint users who crave a great user experience. It's the current king of gadgets
Palm Pre (UK version)
The Palm Pre matches the iPhone for touchscreen innovation, offering a user interface whose gesture and multi-touch capability make for a genuinely finger-friendly phone. The physical keyboard is handy, if you can get to grips with its tiny keys, but the App Catalog needs some serious attention
BlackBerry Curve 8900
We didn't know what to expect from the BlackBerry Curve 8900 but were pleasantly surprised by its attractive, slim design. A full Qwerty keypad and sharp screen means emails and instant messaging are a joy to deal with, but the lack of 3G occasionally bugged us and makes the 8900 a little less desirable than it would otherwise have been
LG Chocolate BL40
It may be jam-packed with really great features, but the LG Chocolate BL40's disappointing user interface means it's not as satisfying a handset to use as the iPhone or HTC Hero
BlackBerry Bold 9000
Unlike Palm, RIM has built up an impressive product portfolio that is made even better by the addition of the Bold. Aside from offering a plethora of features, the Bold's screen is one of the best we've ever seen
Samsung Tocco
The Tocco is a stylish handset with a wealth of features, including a 5-megapixel camera and HSDPA support. It's not quite an iPhone killer, but it's still one of the best touchscreen phones around
