"Pricey but worth every penny"
What I like:
Everything...
What I don't like:
...except video recording quality
Review:
I've only had this phone since last night, as it arrived in the mail. I had upgrade on Orange from my SPV c550 (an awful phone).
From just owning this phone since yesterday, I have had no issues at all. The joystick handles perfectly (whether that will change over time I dont know). The menu system is absolutely easy to navigate through. Syncing the phone with your PC and transfering contacts from outlook couldnt be easier. File transfering is a doddle. File management on the phone is a doddle. The camera is amazing and I've had no issues with the shutter opening in my pocket. The keys are easy to press (I have small fingers though). All the outside buttons are easily placed. It feels really sturdy and well built.
Mine is the black one.
If you look at this phone in a shop or a magazine, you might not be impressed by its looks. But amazingly, once you recieve a new, shiny one in a box, you soon realise that its actually really sexy.
You have to consider the ones in the shop have been handled by countless people and proberbly have bits missing (the one in my local 02 shop had the back missing). That can affect your judgement.
But when I pulled mine out its box, I fell in love (bear in mind I had a brick of an SPV before hand, so anything would impress me). Its a very nice looking phone.
Access to the memory card slot is easy enough, with a bit of strength behind it. Installing the software for the PC was easy and the software interface is very user friendly (I write software, so I hope that makes me an expert).
The back of the phone is easy to get off. Why people complained about the battery section being hard to remove, I dont know. It came off with minimum effort for me and I'm not strong. But not too easily that it would fall off.
The phone may be big, but compared to other phones on the market it feels really light. You cant feel it in your pocket like I could the SPV c550.
The rubber feel on the back is nice and it feels snug in your hand because of it.
Your provided with USB connections and headphones, both of which connect via the same port you connect the charger to. This is a bit strange as you would have expected a dedicated head-phone connection, but Im not complaining.
I have an Ipod for music anyway.
The sound quality is impressive, the radio is a nice touch which might come in usefull when I forget my iPod. And I love the fact that you cant use the radio unless you connect the headphones, and when you play music without them it asks if you want to do that.
1up to Sony for considering other people on the bus.
If you consider that I went from using an SPV c550 smartphone with Windows mobile, which was raved for being great and offering lots of stuff...
...I've been more impressed with this phone in just a few hours than I was with my SPV in 12 months.
You really dont need a smart phone to do most average things now. Phones like the k800i or the d900 will do most things that a smart phone will and they look and work better.
One snag is that the power charger, the USb and headphone connections all connect to the same bottom port using legs to clamp in. The problem is that if you pull it out the wrong way, those legs pull out of the connector and get stuck. Its not an issue because you can pull them out and re-connect them easily.
You have to realise to pull the connection down the right way to remove it.
One possible major issue is the video recording quality. Its not astounding and its confusing as to why Sony didnt make it better. It obviously uses the same 3+ mp camera lense, so why not let us record at far better quality? I expect the phone is capable of it with a firmware update.
But personally, I have a camcorder for that kind of thing.
Aside from those two snags, I really dont understand any of the negative ratings people have given. The phones seems perfect to me, and the issues with the joystick and the battery cover seem unfounded.
I could
