Sony Xperia S vs iPhone 4S camera test

You might assume the 12.1-megapixel camera on the Sony Xperia S would elbow past the 8 megapixels on Apple's iPhone 4S. But spec sheets rarely tell the whole story -- especially when it comes to mobile phone cameras, where a whole range of factors affect image quality, from the lens to the size of the sensor. Megapixel count is only one aspect to consider.

The camera on the iPhone 4S impressed us when we reviewed the device last year, but how does Sony's newest smart phone snapper fare against it? I rolled up my sleeves and got shooting. iPhone 4S test shots are on the left, Xperia S on the right (click photos to enlarge). The sizes of the shots are down to the different aspect ratios of the two cameras.

Outdoors

iPhone 4S outdoor camera test Sony Xperia S outdoor camera test

Both cameras handle bright sunlight pretty well but the iPhone 4S edges ahead, producing a better overall picture of the building, with good colour from the foreground right through to the blue sky in the background. The Xperia hasn't managed to capture any of the sky's colour.

iPhone 4S outdoor camera test Sony Xperia S outdoor camera test

The iPhone captures slightly more of the detail of the plant's leaves, although the Xperia's take is also good.

iPhone 4S outdoor camera test Sony Xperia S outdoor camera test

The colours of the blue drain and pebbles are more true to life on the iPhone vs the Xperia's take.

Outdoor round: iPhone 4S.

Indoors

iPhone 4S indoor camera test Sony Xperia S indoor camera test

Moving indoors, a tricky shot of a room in partial sunlight and shade causes trouble for the Xperia S. Darker portions of the picture, such as the blue wall and red baize of the pool table, are peppered with noise. The iPhone's take on the scene is smoother. Its colours are also truer.

iPhone 4S indoor camera test Sony Xperia S indoor camera test

Both cameras handle the shot of the bookcase, lit by natural light, pretty well -- but the iPhone's photo is slightly crisper and has a higher level of detail than the Xperia's.

iPhone 4S indoor camera test Sony Xperia S indoor camera test

This still life of coloured objects lit by artificial light once again shows up the Xperia's tendency to produce grainy images when conditions are slightly dingy. Colours on the iPhone's shot are more accurate. The Xperia has a tendency to over-saturate colours.

Indoor round: iPhone 4S.

Low light

iPhone 4S indoor camera test Sony Xperia S indoor camera test

In dingy conditions, the level of detail in the shots drops off significantly, as you'd expect. But the iPhone captures an impressive close-up of this two pence coin, compared to the blurry efforts of the Xperia. The Xperia also had more trouble locking on to the coins in this darkened environment. Its response to low light seems to be to bump up the ISO -- resulting in significant loss of detail and a much grainier image.

iPhone 4S low light camera test Sony Xperia S low light camera test

In very dingy conditions both phones produce grainy images with low levels of detail, although once again, the iPhone's shot is slightly more crisp than the Xperia's. However, the iPhone does tend to over-redden flesh tones, whereas the Xperia manages to produce a more life-like tone.

iPhone 4S camera test flash Sony Xperia S camera test flash

Here, I'm testing the flash in a dingy area. The Xperia S wins out with its more moderated beams, which capture strong colour and detail on both the Droidy and Lego Man Torch, without washing them out. The iPhone's effort is much less crisp -- although the colour of the Droid in the iPhone's shot is more realistic.

Low light: iPhone 4S.

Conclusion

In almost all situations, the iPhone 4S edges ahead of Sony's Xperia S camera, with more true-to-life colours, better exposure and focus, and less noise lurking in the shadows. The Xperia S camera is respectable though. It's certainly capable of producing shots with very high levels of detail when conditions are right.

However, it's more finicky than the iPhone 4S, having great trouble focusing in low light conditions. Its tendency to ramp up the ISO also means photos have a tendency to be peppered with noise, even when lighting conditions aren't that gloomy.

anonymous 13 March, 2012 10:47

i just want to point out that as you have the Xperia S set to a 16:9 aspect ratio you are taking a 9 megapixel image and not a 12.1 megapixel image you would get from a 4:3 aspect ratio. This article as a result is not a true representation of the full capablities of the Xperia S.

lets all guess what phone the reviewer has... and no doubt the fact sony also make professional cameras means they know nothing about photography compared to Apple

Did you play around with any of the settings at all? Use the zoom feature on either of the phones? Or was it just a point and click on basic settings?

I also agree with the above that some of the Xperia's shots look a lot better, especially the low light shots, its much better on all those photos, bit puzzled why you picked the iPhone for that??

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 March, 2012 11:13

The pictures from the Xperia S are clearly shot on the 9MP mode and not on the 12MP mode which would show its real capabilities. Also the Xperia's low light shot look a lot better than the ones on the iPhone. Also in the first picture you obviously didn't shoot with both phones at the same exposure thus easily granting the iPhone an unfair win. Please make a proper test now so we could see the real capabilities of the phone.

Also to all Apple fanboys the sensor in the 4S is Sony-made and the same one as in all 2011 Xperia models with 8MP cameras :)

My previous comment (in the Xperia S review) still stands. Not a realistic test - and the results don't agree with your comments! iPhone bias is still there Natasha (or is CNET in the pay of Apple?).

Just want to second the comment made by someone else; The Aspect Ratio of the Sony shots clearly demnstrate that you are using the Xperia at 9mp resolution, not 12mp.

I know the difference; I own one.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 March, 2012 11:27

Guys, you do realize that boosting the Sony up to 12 MP would only further highlight the noise in the images? The more pixels you shove on a tiny sensor, the more the limitations of the sensor are highlighted, especially w. ISO. Also, given that the 4S performs better in terms of noise here, I'd hope you'd have the sense not to ask for the shortcomings of the other phone to be highlighted further....

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 March, 2012 11:31

From the 1st photo it is clear that the iPhone 4S image has been taken with HDR enabled, otherwise a well balanced photo wouldn't have been the result. Unfair tests from some clear Apple fanboys

Well, I personally have an Xperia S, and the camera quality is unrivaled - the Exmor R sensor is mind blowing, and the quality in low light is second to none. Lets not forget, the iPhone has a Sony camera sensor to boot.

Xperia S wins, everytime in my eyes - totally bias review.

anonymous 13 March, 2012 16:02

If you make the Xperia S images the same aspect ratio as the iphone by cropping the image you will end up with a 6.7MP image, nearly half that of the phones full spec. Due to the area you are comparing on each of the pictures the iPhone will be noticably more detailed as you are effectivly comparing a 8MP image to the 6.7MP image on the Xperia.

I looked at alot of the pictures and noticed that the reviewer has no clue about picture quality. Both in details and corner quality xperia s exceeds the iPhone 4s with a large margin (have had a iPhone 4s since it came out and love apple products) but its really clear that the xperia s takes better photos. Period. Just as with a real camera u need to set the settings a bit for some situations. Just for making that option possible is really a Plus for the xperia s.

I have iphone as well as xperia S...and I know wats xperia S is capable of, CNET how much u gt paid from apple?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 02:57

I have both iphone4s and the Xperia S. I also have the Galaxy S2 and a Nokia N8 (sold it recently). I have to admit, the iphone 4s is the best phone for ME. But when it comes to photography, the best is still the N8. The Xperia S comes close to it. Then the Galaxy S2 and lastly the 4s.

While all 4 phones have respectable cameras, the iphone is the weakest in photography.

Clearly the author of this ******** has no idea on photography or is simply ignorant for non apple products. Trust me, i have been there. As much as i want to praise Apple and its products, you have to give credit where its due. Xperia S is the better camera phone.

Take this from a person who is very hooked in the whole Apple ecosystem. I have a 13" macbook pro, a 27" imac, ipad 2 (and about to buy the ipad 3rd gen), apple tv, airport extreme, ipod touch and ipod classic.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 03:37

Anyone with even a passing interest can see the 4s pictures are better. Better edge to edge sharpness, less CA, better exposure handling, etc. Upping the megapixel count won't fix inferior optics. Pity there's no discussion of the differences in the lenses. That's far more important than how many pixels are crammed on to the sensor. The 4s has incredible optics for a camera that small. It will never come close to an SLR, but amazing for a camera you'll use when you didn't bring your camera.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 07:14

In response to those who say boosting the Xperia up to 12mp would make no difference, I've gotta disagree; at 12mp the Sony produces far more detail than at 9.

The reviewer makes a lot of the detail in the iPhone shots being better; put the two up to full resolution and try again.

Noise in the image you say? From personal experience of the Xperia S (have had mine 3 days now), I can say there IS less noise in shots taken by the iPhone, I'm not going to fan-boyly deny it. On detail, colour balance and low light performance, however, the Xperia is the superior choice.

If you put it up to full 12mp resolution!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 07:38

Its a shame CNet. ... Why cant you guys admit some smartfones are better than the iphone?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 07:41

The reviewer states that iPhone 4S produces more real [truer] colours, sharper images, better overall balance as shown by the images, the cameras performing at 8 mpix and 9 mpix [for Sony, as the comments point out]. So ehere is the bias?

4S loses a bit in low light and flash photography. I believe the same conclusion was reached in an early 4S vs Lumia 800 test.

Who makes the lenses? [Zeiss for Sony?]. If the sensors are the same then the software processing the data must be playing an important role. More info on these would be welcome.

Huang Yeechin's avatar

Huang Yeechin 14 March, 2012 09:12

Seriously, this reviewer does not know to use the Sony xperia camera to its full advantage. There are tons of camera options on Sony compared to Iphone 4S to improve each shot over the 4S. Also, some shots above are clearly much better by Xperia S but is skewed to favor 4S. If the reviewer lacks product knowledge of Sony smartphones, he should not be doing this review at all.

So much for non bias, knowledgable understanding of each product sort of review. He might just as well say all other phones sucks except Iphone.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 09:19

A 9MP 16:9 image is nowhere near the qaulity of a 8MP 4:3 image. If you change the 9MP image to match the 4:3 aspect ratio it ends up as a 6.7MP image. If you changed the 8MP image to match the 16:9 aspect ratio it would end up a being 10.6MP Image.

You have taken a camera with a higher resolution sensor that the iPhone and managed to produce a lower resolution image. You portray the test as a 8MP camera vs a 12.1MP camera, that is not even remotley close to the truth.

Just redo the test!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 09:52

People, please, we know some of you hate Apple and therefore are only commenting to reinforce this point, and vice versa. Let's look at the pictures and comment on those shall we? Phone cameras have obviously come a long way in recent years. Both sets of pictures are perfectly passable, and could even be used for prints. That's no mean feat for a functionality that's always going to be secondary to a phone's main purpose. Overall, the iPhone's pictures are, indeed, rather better, but they're not faultless. Some of the highlights are blown out (see the pebbles shot, where the Sony handles exposure better). Neither camera performs particularly well in low light. The real problem with the Sony is that all the photos suffer from artefacts produced by over-zealous noise reduction. Go to ***** to get a sense of what this means if you're not familiar with how you can technically assess digital images. This is the problem with the 'megapixel race', more megapixels don't equate to better images, even in high-end DSLRs. You simply need a physically larger sensor to cope with all those pixels, otherwise, as we can see in the case of the Sony, the processor constantly has to correct for mis-fired pixels (noise). The key problem manifests itself as a kind of odd texture to shaded parts of an image, and an overall loss of sharpness for anything that's not in full sunlight. The other key component, as someone said above, is the lens optics. The 4s has five elements and an IR filter with a max aperture of f2.8. I can't find any specs for the Xperia lens system, but should imagine it's rather more standard in this department -- the images above would definitely suggest so. Again, optics matter more than megapixels: it's all about the glass! As other commentators have said, it would be useful to see how the cameras compare under different settings (e.g. HDR on or off), different quality and aspect ratio settings, but it does seem that, somewhat paradoxically, the ostensible edge of the Xperia in terms of its megapixel count is precisely what disadvantages it against the iPhone 4S in terms of image quality. It's likely that using the full 12MP resolution will only make the noise artefacts worse.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 09:56

The Max aperture on the Xperia S is f2.4

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 10:07

It tells you everything about the quality of CNet reviews that they don't even realise that the 16:9 format is 9mp, and can be easily changed to a 4:3 format at 12mp.

I have the Xperia S, and the pictures are great.

I am amazed that CBS tolerates such pathetic journalism on the UK version of CNet.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 10:13

@ Richard:

"I agree with Anonymous at 11.27 - having the Xperia set to 9-megapixels is closer to the iPhone's 8-megapixels than 12, so surely that's fairer?".

Not at all. I doubt it would make any difference, since the 9mp 16:9 ratio is probably just a cropped version of the 12mp 4:3 ratio.

In any case, you should be testing both cameras to their maximum abilities, not neutering one to make the test "fairer". I used to love this site, but your standards have nosedived over the last year or so.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 March, 2012 10:17

There is not going to be any differance between the quality of the 12MP and 9MP modes on the Xperia S as the image is just cropped to produce the 9MP version. What will make a diffence is that you have to move further away to take the picture as you are affectivly cutting off the top and bottom of the image produced by the lens.

I'm not bothered which is better but if you have both cameras set to the same aspect ratio it makes it easier to compare.

In fairness to the reviewer the Xperia S defaults to the 9MP mode so she probalby hasn't changed any settings on either phone.

anonymous 16 March, 2012 03:02

like others have said, you can't put the 8mp 4.3 against a 9mp 16.9 photo, and the SXS has a scene detector & would have backlighted dark imagines & reduce the brightness in the photo which didn't capture the sky colour, its like you've shot the pictures without the SXS adjusting to the light conditions, or switch it to manual, another thing, the SXS photos load up on my PS3s browser, 4s don't which means the file size must be too big, which is kinda odd for a lower mp photo?
try the 8mp vs 12mp with sensors on

anonymous's avatar

No matter. I always LOVE my SONY products and would die for it and noting else.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 March, 2012 17:56

weird again
cause 4S's has exmor R 8mp from sony
sony has much more experience in shooting and cameras.
SXS has a 12MP exmor R, better, obviously.

So this is all crap.
And if it is not, don t forget that you "look" at these pics in a screen. And this screen also has limits...
So, purely spec speaking, and being purely logical, SXS MUST be better. whatever you try to show.
Then, when it comes to "real" colours, ...erm,,,
my eyes and my interpretation is NO ONE's else...
my screen, my graphics card, MY perception of MY screen, MY perception of the pic in the camera's screen (all different), and more over, based on this interpretation, MY photoshoping with MY screen, ... pffff
never forget anyway that this will be displayed in ANOTHER screen, with other results, and in case same results, DIFFERENT eyes viewing.
I do really think this photo thing is a huge bullshit.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 March, 2012 22:16

Natasha Lomas...are you serious? What a COLOSSAL MISTAKE!
At least set maximum resolution on the Xperia S to 12MP for a REAL comparison..
This is like leaving the Xperia S on 9MP and setting the iPhone4s to 5MP for a camera test..
What a joke this test is.. there should be a law against this complete misrepresentation, which will mislead buyers..

anonymous's avatar

This is ridiculous, the shots you have taken on the Xperia S look terrible and not in relation to how the camera can truly perform, I could only say you have a biased perspective or some undesirable photography skills when handling Sony products.
Maybe im harsh but seeing as its supposed to be a phone review, one requirement is that you offer an even perspective and in this case you havent, completely favouring the iPhone.
Quite disgraceful in my opinion.

"Sony makes professional cameras". What a load of crap. Sony cameras aren't good at all. They are all built in china or a surrounding company with the cheapest materials. I've also found some comments from reviewers about unresponsive buttons? Can anyone confirm?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 2 April, 2012 11:36

It's amazing how biased you accuse apple users of being when all of the comments slating the review come from non iPhone users , the experia s is a great phone but the camera isn't as good as it should be , the optics on the 4s make for better photos , all I hear is if you change all the settings and use a higher mode you may end up with better photos where as I can whip out my phone snap a picture and 9/10 it will look better than yours :) everyone knows the iPhone 4s is just a filler phone while we wait for the 5 , so it's even funnier how other phones struggle to keep up with it , now don't flame just read and Learn.

Review is biased. The reviewer is clearly the kind of guy owning an iPhone, iMac, Macbook, etc.
I've got experience in the matter. I'm sure my sister would never swap her old IPhone 4 for my new Xperia S. This is why Apple makes a lot of money: most of the buyers are a bunch of know it alls that only praise their own product and are too ignorant to even look at something else

anonymous's avatar

the aspect ratio used by the reviewer in xperia S was only 9 MEGAPIXEL and it was compared to iphone 4s which the camera is only 8 MEGAPIXEL. therefore experia S should have the brighter images because it has a higher pixel than 4s. BUT iphone 4s still got the clear and brighter images than experia S in outdoor shots,
however experia S has a better image than 4s in lowlight condition.

This is what another tech website article said:

'The 8 MP camera on the iPhone 4S can satisfy your need for a pic but the Xperia S shooter gives you more. Its 12 MP rear camera is one of the best in any phone in the market today. The camera app features geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama, and image stabilization. You also have a LED for flash and video light and the ability to record 1080p HD videos. Front camera is 1.3 MP which is also better than the iPhone’s VGA front shooter. The Xperia S scores another point here.'

I am not surprised by this awful article from Inet sorry Cnet. What do you expect from a site that dared to compare the ipod to the PS Vita. Angry birds or the most powerful handheld games console on the planet?

Why is the angle not the same om both pictures. And also the ratio i wrong. In sweden we got mobil.se thats the same comapny and they are PAYED by the manufactuers to get their resoults. It sucks!

To the person who said the Sony DSLRs are rubbish. Completely wrong! Couldn't be further from the truth if you tried! Sony never claim to be the absolute best, but the photos you can produce with them is astounding. I've seen people use Nikon and Canon and produced hideous photos. I myself own a Sony DSLR and I have to say they're the best value for money anywhere. Nikon and Canon are so overpriced. Also, I serve to remind you that it's all about the photographer behind the camera. If it doesn't produce good shots you're most likely not using it correctly.

As far as this article goes it is clear the author is favouring the iPhone. I suggest they bring the Xperia up to 12mp and try again. Limiting the phone in such a way does not qualify as a fair test, regardless ogle whether they meant to do such or not.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 April, 2012 22:16

And also, the Xperia camera will surely be better, as Sony make iPhone camera lenses, why would they give the competition better than themselves?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 April, 2012 20:40

Fully biased in all pictures if u see the zoom level and placement.bogus.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 25 April, 2012 20:47

Xperia S photos aspect ratio: 1.78:1 (16:9) Widescreen 9,000,000 pixels.
iPhone 4S photos aspect ratio: 1.33:1 (4:3) 7,990,272 pixels.

Fairly big difference there. For a fair and unbiased comparison you would have let both phones loose with their native aspect ratios (as they were designed to be used). Hardly a fair and scientific comparison by CNET is it?

Perhaps revisit this with a stand / tripod for both phones to get placement the same for the shots as well.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 April, 2012 09:15

OK. There is a lot of criticism of bias on this review. Of features which were not featured on the Sony.
Can anyone point me to what they feel is a fairer comparison.

anonymous 30 April, 2012 21:32

well, for my eye iphone takes great pictures. so does xperia S. if you look first photo, you notice that yes, xperia s doesnt have that sky, and yes, iphone has it. but if you open and look to these photos, you see that iphone has more noise. and thats a fact. not fanboy of android or iOS, i like how stable ios is, but i like how you can custom your android. just, open these photos and you notice their differences. first photo was just an example

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 30 April, 2012 21:36

and in that adidas photo, look at how great that photo is on xperia s vs. 4s. the "Drinking chocolate" text is more readable on xperia s, unlike on 4s. and 4s has too bright picture

CNET is ruined by this "i"diot

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 May, 2012 23:29

This was ridiculous, I own both iPhone 4S and Xperia arc (Version before Xperia S), but in most situations, Xperia's camera exceeds the iPhone.
CNET is clearly being biased, and this is very disappointing.
This article makes it so difficult to trust CNET's further reviews.
Its true that iPhone camera is well built, but Xperia camera has more options (which this reviewer doesn't know how to set, or intentionally ignoring it).
For example, there is an outdoor option which prevents too much light like in the first picture, and for the close up, there is a macro mode built in, which takes the picture beautifully.

anonymous 4 May, 2012 02:33

Sorry your conclusion is not good, noise reduction on the sony is better. With flash led is winner too it's very importante a good light regulation. I go to buy one the xperia s tomorrow !

I thinked on buiyng the Xperia S with all his faults(and they are many, including the transparent sticker o top of the normal screen glass to replace an Gorilla Glass) but this turned me down.

It's not about the test that looks ok or the phone(I know what I'm buiyng) but the comments that were after. I don't know how Apple buiers( I don't own a single Apple product!!! ) can be called sheeps when just here they are that much i.diots that praise a non so great Sony phone and offending others that have a second opinion.

The sensor on Xperia S it's obviosly too small to carry 12MP photos without artefacts and noise and the lenses I don't think tey are Iphone's quality either. Sony delivered the camera sensor to Apple, a better version of that used in Arc S and they put their own lenses( Better ones).
Why Sony, the suplier didn't go for that solution too? Because of the price, none of that fanboys would pay for a quality Sony as much as for the Iphone.

Too all the blind folks, look at another review, neutral one and the results are even worse for Sony:

the sony xperia S is not not very good...even my c905 takes beter shoots. (i had xperia s for about one month), however, the sonyercisson xperia arc s is better.

iphone 4s have a more quality image sensor then xperia s

I hav both iphone 4s and xperia S. tested the xperia S at 12mp turns out iphone color is more vivid and sharp while the one on Xperia is quite "dead".

Fairly disappointed with the rendering programme for xperia S. Hope that the coming ICS update will improve image rendering.

i have both phones and i must say that I am surprise that CNET results are extremely bias towards Apple. I am a strong supporter of Apple products but lets be fair....and true...this comparison test is not ON.

I own an Xperia S and my girlfriend has the iPhone 4s. We work together and often take photos during events to post directly to facebook for immediacy (though we use a Canon DSLR for 'pro' shots).

For indoor shots in good light the Sony wins hands down. In high contrast areas the iPhone really falls over and the Xperia is streets ahead. Outdoors in good light both cameras are excellent. In dim light the iPhone is awful and for flash-enabled shots is worse still. So much so that my girlfriend has recently sold her iPhone and bought a Lumia 800. She loves the Lumia as a phone but the camera is pretty poor in comparison to both the iphone and xperia. Strange because she bought the nokia on the strength of reviews saying how good the camera is.

I wondr sometimes if the reviewers even know which product they are using as reviews are often so completely different to real life.

Another point - the video quality of the Xperia in low light is awesome - streets ahead of the £500 HD Camcorder I bought for the job but which is awful in low light. True the Xperia vidcam has problems gaining focus sometimes but the environment I work in (discos) is difficult for all cameras. Once it has gained focus though the exposure and quality are fab - I'm selling my camcorder now!

I don't have either but I have done my research on both because im looking for a new phone and overall the Sony xperia s wins like most of them say you like the iPhone more so why compare them if your going to say bad things about one phone and give things about the other you have to test them the same I thing the Sony xperia s is the best my mate has a iPhone 4s and he wish he never bought it.

I truely disagree with this article. It is in no way that the difference in camera between the two phones was this much. If you do not be fair in your articles then do not "Roll up my sleeves and got shooting". I really wont believe any more of your conclusions.

Actually both phone's camera are Sony manufactured!!!
There is only difference in the camera software

anonymous 11 July, 2012 13:52

bizarre test. I think the iphone4S camera is excellent, and I own the sony.
but everyone above is correct.
The first outdoors test is badly metered. but if you put someone on that balcony they would look fine, if you used the 4S picture they would be just a dark outline.
in other tests it's 50/50 although the xperia S does ramp up the ISO
however, you can't pixel-peep at a camera phone, to see the actual use you need to not compare the images, but compare a facebook post or 6x4" printout. looking at pixels will not get you anywhere.
On the book picture the iphone looks worse in thumbnail but clearly better when you look at the full screen picture. however, the sony looks shakey as hell. user error or really a phone issue? I can't tell.
Flawed review. I can see the 4S winning the comparison but this article hardly illustrates that.

The iPhone 4S also features a camera upgrade that will leave you (and your friends) asking “That picture was taken with a phone?” While the iPhone 4 had a very nice 5 megapixel camera, the iPhone 4S brings smartphone photography to new heights with an 8 megapixel, f/2.4 aperture camera with built-in autofocus, LED flash and geotagging capability. Even in low light, the new camera delivers stunning photographs, and the color accuracy and white balance are spot on. You can even edit your photos right on your iPhone 4S with included apps and film HD video at 1080p.The brand new mobile operating system, iOS 5, offers an entire package of more than 200 new features and upgrades to your iPhone 4S. Some favorites include a streamlined notification center, convenient messaging between all your Apple devices (and your friends Apple devices, too!), as well as iCloud and AirPlay integration, subscription management and much more. This smartphone comes with a whole suite of built-in apps, including the advanced voice control feature known as Siri. With an innovative, intuitive, almost sentient design, Siri allows you to speak to your smartphone as if you were speaking to your own personal assistant. Whether you’re looking for the nearest parking garage or asking Siri to look up your mother-in-law’s phone number, this intelligent app listens to what you say and then chooses the right app to complete your request. The new Apple iPhone 4S is also giving Mac users some extra options that have never been available before. AT&T and Verizon provide different iPhone services for a long time, but right now Sprint also offers amazing plans. The iPhone 4S will also be available in a 64GB model for the first time ever. For more information about the iPhone 4S, visit your local Apple retail store or your local service provider. For the more visual crowd, iPhone photography is a hobby that’s taking the world by storm, and with the advanced camera on the iPhone 4S, you’ll be taking high-quality pictures that will leave you scratching your head and wondering “That photo was taken with a phone?” The perfect colors and the awesome high-resolution will give you the great opportunity to make quality photos almost everywhere. Plus, with the most intuitive user interface on the market, anyone can produce beautiful, fun, unique and creative images with the iPhone 4S. For photo-sharing (since you’ll want to brag about how great your photos are) and fun filters and effects, Hipstamatic and Instagram 2.0 top the charts. Both iPhone apps integrate instantly with Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites so you can share your view of the world with your friends and family. Hipstamatic allows you to order prints of your favorite photo creations, and Instagram lets you preview filters and effects live as you shoot. For even further iPhone photo fun, try apps like CameraBag, Toy Camera, Color Splash, Photogene and iDarkroom. Adobe Photoshop Express is also a must-have app for instant, easy photo editing on your iPhone.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the majority of comments, the purpose of this review is to see which takes the better photographs, not which takes the better photographs at 8mp. Having seen both products, I have to agree that the Xperia photographs are definately better, I think that the iPhone images to be honest look a little too colorful to be true-to-life. I have an old X10i but the photographs I get from that 8.1mp could quite easily also beat the iPhone 4s, but thats not for this review,

I have the xperia s and im very disapointed about the camera. Very grainy images in mid and low light.People have yellow skin .The autofocus is not working almost all time. Friends phones with 3 and 5 mp cameras takes better photos than 12mp xperia s and im embarassed. I tried all settings , now im trying to root my phone and install hacked drivers and camera applications... If you dont believe me , google xperia s camera problem ...

I have a sony phone and I just want to say that people look much much better on pictures taken by the sony phone compared to pictures taken by the iPhone. I think that is a very important fact! The iPhone always makes wrinkles appear more severe than they actually are...!
And I'd rather have a bad lighting and grainy pictures then all my friends I have taken pictures off looking kind of old and ugly haha.
