Good: Looks good, slim for it's spec, large screen, good sized keypad

Bad: Appalling, inconsistant and inefficient UIQ user interface

Comment: I agree with many points made in the editors review.

On paper the W960i, with it's good looks and top specification, should be superb but in use it just doesn't live up to the promise. This is entirely due to the user interface which over complicates, in some very unintuitive ways, just about every action and function on the phone. There is little consistancy of user input making operation of the phone a fiddly juggle between, key pad, jog wheel and touch screen. Quick one handed operation of the W960i is a non starter.

Buggy and sloppy firmware is the curse upon this phone. It is not even possible to scroll the cursor back through a text message you are writing, character by character so you can edit it or add a word etc. The W960i is full of annoying quirks/bugs like this.

The Walkman is ok but only ok. I personally don't think the sound quality is anything special but certainly not bad. I'd like the graphic equaliser to be adjustable by the user rather than just a selection of presets. I'm not keen on the tendency for the Walkman to over manage your music files. It insists on categorising and pigeon holing every file in predetermined ways that you cannot disable.

The camera is fine. It's performance was noticeably improved with the first firmware update issued by Sony Ericsson. It also takes good 320x240 video at a decent frame rate. A couple things let it down. Not surprisingly the user interface. Adjustment of settings is onscreen, the icons (as is the case throughout) are too small to reliably operate with your fingers, so you have to use the stylus. Who in their right mind wants to be fiddling about with the stylus on a touch screen as they are about to take a photo? Next, still photos and videos are bizarrely accessed in completely seperate sections which you have to navigate back and forth through the main menu to get to. There is no logical reason for this I can think of and it yet again unnecessarily complicates use of the W960i.

To me the W960i is a missed opportunity by Sony Ericsson. Considering it's hardware specifications, it could have been so much better than it is if they had only put more care and effort into the user interface.

Good: excellent music player, wi-fi, large screen and large buttons

Bad: slow transition between app's, non cybershot camera

Comment: I've had this phone since mid feb and am well pleased. call quality fantastic music playback excellent and is as easy to put music on as it is to save a file to a flash drive. screen quality superb although sometimes hard to see in sunlight. having a keypad instead of full function touch screen is a bonus for texting while walking and once ou get used to the input methods, it becomes easy combining them. It's only downfalls are the lags it suffers when opening applications, although I'm sure a software update will fix this soon enough, and the reduction in quality when zooming in on the camera. I've had plenty of envious glances from N95 owners who are surprised by the "slimness" of this phone. all in all i would definitely recomend to a friend.

Good: Excellent MP3 Player

Bad: To many sub menu's

Comment: Took a few days to get into using this phone. It is very different from any Sony Ericsson I have had before. Its menu's are more like a pc than a phone. I found this the key to using the W960i it has sub menu's very similar to that on a operating system.
The camera is excellent of a MP3 phone. Does not loose to much clarity in digital zoom and focuses well.
The MP3 player is excellent. The in ear head phones are up to the usual Sony standard. The sound quality is superb. It is also easy to find a track, album or artist especially if you you use the search facility.
It also searches the Internet well. Fairly fast seaarches and downloads.
Oh yes, it's not a bad phone either! Text menu's were confusing to begin with.
If I have any complaint about this phone it is the fact I had to refer to the manual for some operating instructions. First phone I have had to do this with. After all I'm a guy ad we don't do instruction manuals well!!
I would give this phone 9/10 and I only drop a mark because I think it could look much better. Sony Ericsson have put a great deal into the operations of this phone and forgotten to make it look as good as it really is.
