Verdict

Samsung is consistently pushing the boundaries when it comes to cramming the features into a slim device and the G600 is a testament to its engineering capabilities. It's definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a good camera phone

In this review

If there's one thing Samsung knows how to do really well it's make very thin phones crammed with lots of features. This time round it has pumped out one with a 5-megapixel camera that's only 15mm thin -- 6mm slimmer than the Nokia N95, the only other 5-megapixel camera phone currently on the market.

The Samsung G600 will be available on several networks soon for free on a monthly contract.

Design
The G600 isn't the most revolutionary-looking handset in the world and sticks very close to Samsung's traditional slider phone layout. It's not ugly, but it doesn't have the wow-factor of slider phones such as the LG Chocolate or Shine.

It comes in a rather tame two-toned grey casing that keeps in line with the Samsung's generally serious aesthetic -- it certainly won't raise any eyebrows. What will impress you, given its feature set, is how slim it is, measuring a compact 15mm thin.

The G600 has a large, bright screen that's easy to view

Average looks aside, the G600 feels good to hold and use. Its screen is large enough to view without squinting, there are no annoying touch-sensitive keys to press and the keypad is usable. The camera on the back is also well protected behind the slide.

Features
The G600's 5-megapixel camera is by far its star feature, which is probably why Samsung decided to keep it nice and safe behind the slide mechanism. You access it by opening the phone and then pressing the dedicated shutter button on the side.

Pressing this shutter button very gently in camera mode activates the autofocus, which takes a bit of getting used to as it's very sensitive. The camera lets you adjust a variety of settings, including picture size and flash mode.

The G600's keypad is well laid-out and easy to press

The G600's flash is unfortunately only an LED photo light that doesn't illuminate as well as a xenon flash, such as the one found on the Sony Ericsson K810i. You can whack the ISO up to 800 but the shots come out far grainier. Aside from taking photos, you can also use the G600 to shoot video.

Good: Good camera, nice looking and slim, nice screen, everything works.

Bad: Not a very exciting phone to use and own.

Comment: This is quite a straightforward phone; nothing particularly exciting about it, but it performs nicely all round. That said, I have not tried any similar phones so I can't really compare.

Good: erm........? it looks ok, the screen is a nice size.

Bad: camera, message tones, ring volume, it always freezes up, etc, etc.

Comment: I bought this phone as it was supposed to be so wonderful with it's 5mp camera and all the other goodies packed into it.
In two weeks I have exchanged it twice as I thought it was faulty because it kept freezing up when doing pretty much anything on it but especially when texting and then you have to wait for it to unfreeze to use it again. Also when texting if you put in a wrong letter and try to backspace most of the time it will delete your whole message so you have to start again! slightly annoying!
If the camera is 5mp then I am David Bailey, it is absolutely appalling and trying to get a clear picture is near on impossible always seem to be blurry, the shutter speed is very slow as well, so forget trying to snap anything quick or moving, you'll miss it!
Trying to connect to the PC is a nightmare as well quite often it will tell you connection has failed occasionally it works.
There are only a couple of different message tones built in and they are pretty rubbish and there is absolutely no way of downloading your own tones, this day and age you would think that would be a standard ability on cell phone.
All in all I am very disappointed with the phone, as far as I am concerned Samsung are trying to sell something that isn't ready to be sold yet, they need to do some more work on it.
I am returning my phone and exchanging it for a LG Viewty which is pretty much similar in features but "apparently" a lot better quality at the same price, let's see if that one does what it's supposed to, I will let you all know!
