iOS 5: How to sync your iPhone over Wi-Fi

CNET How To

The iPhone's greatest flaw has long been the fact that to both set it up and synchronise it you needed to connect it to iTunes. iCloud has gone some way to overcoming this obstacle, as it enables music, books and apps bought on one device to be downloaded to all of your others simultaneously. It's only with iOS 5, though, that your iPhone and iPad can truly break free.

Set up iTunes Wi-Fi sync

Step 1

1. You first need to pair your iPhone with iTunes so that it knows where it should send its data. Connect it to your Mac or PC using the bundled USB cable and click its entry in the sidebar. Scroll to Options on the device Summary page and check the box beside Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi. Click Apply. You can now detach your iPhone as any further changes that you make to its settings can be passed over the air, as we'll see in step 4.

Step 2

2. iTunes Wi-Fi sync can only be initiated when your iPhone is plugged in to a power source. Although Apple implies that it must remain plugged in throughout the operation, we have unplugged ours during our tests and the synchronisation has completed without issue. Your experience may vary, so ignore Apple's advice at your own risk.

To initiate the process, tap Settings > General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. The synchronisation button will be greyed out until you connect to the mains, and it won't 'see' your Mac or PC until you launch iTunes. Once you do, tap Sync Now. A progress bar will monitor the process.

Step 3

3. You can now switch away from the sync app on your iPhone and leave it running in the background. During our tests we were able to use our iPhone as normal while synchronising, making calls and receiving emails without any problem. Keep an eye on the double-ended circular arrow in the status bar, which spins throughout the sync. The process takes considerably longer over Wi-Fi than it does when physically connected, even if you've set iCloud to mirror all downloads to each of your iOS devices, as it must still perform the regular core handset backup over your network.

Step 4

4. Take things one step further and you can manually manage the content on your phone over the air. Return to iTunes on your Mac or PC and check the box beside Manually manage music and videos. You can now drag media from your library to a disconnected device.

Wirelessly syncing your photos

Step 5

5. Although iOS 5 synchronises your last 1,000 images over a 30-day period with your other iOS devices courtesy of iCloud Photo Stream, it's still not possible to natively transfer selected photos from your iPhone back to your Mac or PC without connecting it by USB.

To plug this gap we'd recommend using PhotoSync. This £1.49 app works on both iPhone and iPad and can wirelessly transfer images between both of them and your computer, either one by one or by recognising what has been added to the library since it was last used and transferring new entries en masse. For greater flexibility, its internal Web server also lets you navigate your iPhone or iPad image library using a regular Mac or PC browser and download collections as compressed Zip files.

The option "Sync this iPhone over Wi-Fi" is not present in iTunes (10.5) on PowerBook G4 ... How can I enable it?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 12 October, 2011 21:50

love the wireless sync, works very well. Very annoying how the phone/ipad has to be charging for it to work, one of the first things they will fix in the jailbreak i imagine.

I have upgraded my iPod, but lost all music and apps. Is this normal? Does everything have to be re-synched again. Life will not be worth living if I lose my wife's phone contacts when updating her phone.

Not working with my PC too ... iTune 10.5.. iCloud on ... Wi-Fi sync is checked .. I plug my iphone to the power supply and the sync box is still grayed out ... Help please :(
iCloud works fine when i sync my photos and contacts ... But the normal wi-fi sync doesn't ... The box appear when i connect my iphone via USB to my Laptop

Thank you so much!! All I had to do was look at the first picture to figure out how I needed to do Wi-Fi sync!! you guys are AWESOME!!!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 October, 2011 06:48

Just to help some people, was starting to happen to me, you have to sync the ipod/iphone/ipad 100% on itunes first, once you have, then go on the summary and click on the box and click apply, once it does you can unplug and it should work on the ipod/iphone/ipad.... thats what i did though :P

Tried all this and the sync button on iPhone is still greyed out saying it will sync next time pc is available, anyone got any ideas??

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 October, 2011 11:59

I also had to close iTunes and reopen it after checking the "sync over wi-fi" box before my iPhone 4 would "see" my MacBook Pro and sync.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 October, 2011 16:07

the wifi snyc works fine for me...
some interesting facts that i figured out
1. you dont have to connect to the wall to sync wirelessly. when your iphone shows up on itunes, just click the sync button on itunes like we usually do when plugging our iphone to itunes, then everything will be synced wirelessly.
2. if u cant find your iphone on itunes after u have done all the steps mentioned, just close itunes (completely closing it including closing it on task manager in case itunes run in background), reopen it, and WAIT! usually 30 sec to 1 min for me, but everytime my iphone appears.

Just got off phone with Apple support. Anonymous (13 October, 2011 04:34) is exactly correct. Which also means computers must run Intel processors. Thus, as I have a pre-Intel Powerbook G4, I'm out of luck for this capability (not to mention iCloud, etc., etc.), until I can spring for a new MB Pro. (Donations welcomed.)

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 October, 2011 00:23

If you have that box check and you use the iTunes wifi sync under settings it will obviously sync via wifi. But, if you have it plugged in to your computer with that box checked will it still only sync over wifi or will it sync via usb?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 October, 2011 09:23

cant get wifi synce to work checked everything ok, can access library with home sharing, remote control of music etc, ping devices and all see each other, reinstalled itunes.. tried on 2 iphones and an ipad...

i've got an imac, itunes 5, ios 5, but the checkbox for sync over wifi doesnt appear...help ?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 October, 2011 16:43

Me too. I have Windows 7 and Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I updated every thing. First it worked fine then itunes crashed. When I used the old way. It works fine.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 October, 2011 18:30

Need to get rid of the plug in requirement in the next update. The whole point of wifi syncing is to not have to plug in your phone. It should be simple to add a feature that wont let you sync or aborts the process if your battery drops below a certain percentage.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 15 October, 2011 09:48

Syncing photos doesn't seem to be a problem, but how in the world does one sync their cameraroll videos from an iPhone to their computer if they are using Wi-Fi Syncing? There doesn't seem to be an easy way to accomplish this sans cable.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 15 October, 2011 16:11

it has to be plugged in to a power source- then i might as well just sync with usb cable.. wow, apple thank you for another useful feature..

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 15 October, 2011 17:56

I just synced iPhone 4 and iPad 1 over wifi to macbook running Lion without having then connected to power. Worked fine after I'd ticked the box in iTunes

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 15 October, 2011 19:15

There isn't a power requirement.
It will drain your battery, but nothing states that it must be plugged in.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 15 October, 2011 19:31

It will stop syncing if your battery drops below 20%...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 October, 2011 07:11

Step 2, "connect to the mains"...what are you talking about?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 October, 2011 07:31

Whats the big deal with this wirless synching? You still have to turn on your pc and start itunes, when thats done why not plug ur iphone in? I really dont want to leave my pc on 24/7.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 October, 2011 15:51

if you want to sync over wifi , you need itune 10.5 and iphone with ios 5 version, then you have to go summary botton and scroll , then you will see there sync over wifi

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 October, 2011 16:10

I hate to break it to you guys but... I cloud sync with iTunes only works on a mac running Lion, not snow leopard or leopard and deffo not windows!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 October, 2011 16:16

i don't know why some/all of you (including the article's author) needed to be plugged into a power source to initiate the wifi synch. i can initiate and finish the wifi synch without being plugged in at all (at the beginning or at any other point). i have tried this from both iTunes on my iMac and from my phone (in Settings/General).

you might want to try again without being plugged in.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 October, 2011 10:36

FYI you don't have to have it plugged into Mains to sync that is just for automatic sync you can initiate a sync at any time just be pressing the sync button the only requirement is that iTunes is running obviously. Works perfectly for me

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 October, 2011 22:30

Works fine on my windows XP.
Had to restart iTunes to get it to work.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 October, 2011 03:05

Ok, I have discovered that my laptop will not sync over WiFi if the laptop is connected to my wireless router and the WiFi swith (button) on the laptop is turned off. I had to enable the WiFi directly on the laptop to bypass the wireless router. All is working fine now. I'v scrolled through as much of the comments below as possible but could not find my particular problem with why the WiFi sync was not working so I posted this. If my post is "common knowlege" I am sorry to waste the space on this page.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 9 November, 2011 22:17

thanks, I could not do it... and a stupid thing, I also have hal as a wallpaper...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 15 November, 2011 10:34

you need to be on os x lion for this to work !!! just called apple as the option is not on my imac due to being on an older os.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 12 December, 2011 16:33

==I also had to close iTunes and reopen it after checking the "sync over wi-fi" box before my iPhone 4 would "see" my MacBook Pro and sync.

So my big Duh was I wasn't launching iTunes on my MacBook while trying to sync wirelessly-- did that, and the Sync Now on my phone became active. I guess I keep forgetting that because I'm basically just trying to sync up calendars (but of course that's enabled through iTunes).

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 12 January, 2012 17:57

So I'm trying to sync music over WiFi and the sync now buttons greyed out still. I was able to sync music a few weeks ago and now all of a sudden i cant. I've tried everything, I didn't think it'd be that complicated but its annoying and I just want my music synced..Help!

Adam Wallen's avatar

Adam Wallen 14 January, 2012 16:06

Thanks for the step by step - it worked for me. As a previous poster mentioned, I had to restart iTunes. I then initiated the Sync from the phone. I watched iTunes on the computer, and nothing happened. So i initiated the Sync from the phone again, and this time it worked. Step 2 of 8 "Backing Up" and still going strong.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 January, 2012 22:58

So... you have to plug the iPhone in to power be able to sync. I use a wire to plug my iPhone in! I wouldn't therefore call this wireless! I really don't understand the reasoning behind it. It's my battery - if I want to use it synchronising, why can't I??

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 February, 2012 13:53

Ok so I have a 4s and my Wireless sync option on the phone is greyed out and below it says that it will continues once my device, in my case its STEVES becomes available. I wasnt on a call or using the phone and it was connected to wifi so why would it be doing that?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 March, 2012 11:22

Thanks for this now hopefully my new laptop wont freeze anymore ... everytime i plugged my iphone usb into my laptop after a few mins or when transfering pics etc my screen would freeze and all i was seeing was coloured dots on the screen. Only way i could get it to work again was to hit the turn off button, which cant be good for the laptop! Syncs straight away now over wifi :D

Once you connect iPad to PC or other Apple devices, it will automatically detect and scan the devices. Now, let's learn how to transfer iPad movies to PC.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 12 April, 2012 11:10

what a stupid way for synchronizing...! if you have to plug it in USB what's the necessity of sync. over wireless while you can sync. via that USB that you have to plug in?

anonymous 12 April, 2012 13:23

But I only want to sync pictures

Wifi won't sync contacts???? Any ideas?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 November, 2012 18:11

LOL Noticed how many folks fail here at reading directions..
- You ONLY have to plug the USB cable in the first time you set it up. Any other time you do not.
- Did have to start and restart mine twice for it to start working correctly.

Down side is that it will not play your music in iTunes off your iPod like it will plugged in.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 December, 2012 20:06

Thin is whats the problem with plugging your iPhone in if you have to be right next to your computer anyway to sync and the computer has to be on, tbh not that cool
