The Reminders app is one of many new tools added in iOS 5. Like a normal task manager, it lets you enter a list of duties and set dates for each one, but it also lets you set reminders based on location, rather than time. Watch our video above for a full step by step guide on how to use it.
The concept of contexts
Some jobs can't be done in a certain location. You can't buy bread at home, or renew your season ticket anywhere but at the train station, so a time-based reminder to do either when you're in the wrong place is close to useless. Context-based reminders use the iPhone's integrated GPS tools to pop up alerts when you're in the relevant location for completing a task.
Setting a reminder
Here we've set three reminders by tapping '+' and entering a title for each one.

Two of these -- booking the dentist and renewing the car insurance -- can be given time-based reminders, so we'll tap each one, select 'on a day' and then use the standard iOS tumblers to set a deadline.
Returning to the list of reminders, we can now tap 'date' to switch from the list view, and see all of our reminders for a particular day listed in order.

But the reminder to buy milk should be triggered not at a certain time but when we arrive at a particular location. Set locations must already exist in the Contacts app. Our local supermarket isn't in there yet, so we'll use the Maps app to search for it and then tap the blue arrow at the end of its pushpin pop-up.
This calls up the shop's public contact details, which we want to add to the address book by tapping 'add to Contacts'.

Returning to Reminders, we now tap the milk entry, followed by 'at a location', followed by 'choose address'. Searching for 'Sainsburys' brings up the new record, and tapping it adds it to the reminder.
Tap 'remind me' to return to the settings page, and then select 'when I leave' or 'when I arrive'. In this case, we want the latter.

We now click 'done' to return to the Reminders overview, completing the process. Our reminder to buy milk won't appear on any of the daily task sheets, but, the next time we're passing the store, our iPhone will remind us to pop in.
Marking tasks as done
When you've completed a task, tap the square box to the left of its name. It will be removed from the Reminders list, but it won't be forgotten. Swiping the list right moves it out of the way to reveal a list of completed jobs and the days on which they were done.

The 'At a location' button does not appear on my reminders app.
Is it available on Iphone 3GS running ios5 in the UK?
anonymous 13 October, 2011 00:15
Doesn't look like this feature works on the 3GS, it's not working for me either.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 00:23
It's not showing up for me either, and I have the 4. :(
anonymous 13 October, 2011 00:45
same here i have the 3gs, and no at location button:( :( :( :(
anonymous 13 October, 2011 00:51
Click the three lines at the left of the screen, press reminders and it should work.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 01:41
Have just tried on 3GS for an hour to get the locations working - no go
anonymous 13 October, 2011 02:08
I was able to get it to work on my iPhone 4 by adding a list under the 'On My Phone' section. It appears that the Exchange ( MS Exchange 2010 & Hotmail Exchange) items - Location based Reminders are not supported in the iReminders App.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 02:26
I had an idiot moment with this - It only works for reminders, not tasks. You have to swipe to the right to get to reminders and then the location option shows up...
anonymous 13 October, 2011 05:11
I am having the same problem with 'At a location' button not showing on my iPhone 3gs.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 06:31
The same problem with a 3GS on Mexico any solution
anonymous 13 October, 2011 06:56
yep me as well im not getting the at location swipe button either :(
anonymous 13 October, 2011 07:47
Actually, as well as my 3gs it's not showing up on my ipad2 either
anonymous 13 October, 2011 07:49
You should enable iCloud reminders first and then you will get the location button for reminder setting.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 07:56
^ that did it
anonymous 13 October, 2011 09:53
I have enabled Reminders in iCloud and that location button doesn't show up eider. iPhone 3GS
anonymous 13 October, 2011 11:48
Reminders imports all of your tasks, and geotagging is not available for tasks. At the bottom of the screen it will say X/X (1/24 for me). The task list is named at the top. Swipe from left to right until the list says "Reminders" and entries in here will have the location based option. I don't know why it imports the task lists.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 11:53
You can also click on the menu (lines at top left) and select reminders from the list. It is the only one under iCloud section. New lists will also have geotagging and be listed here.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 12:33
when you go to reminders you have three sections, completes, tasks and reminders, that you can access flipping the to the right. Only items on the reminder section allow on location reminder.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 13:27
switched on Reminders in iCloud on my 3gs but still no 'At a location' slider
anonymous 13 October, 2011 13:37
I also dont have any Button there. I did try all of your tips but it doesnt work..
iPhone 3gs
anonymous 13 October, 2011 15:04
Location has to be only from contacts, which is a big restriction. There is more scope for improvement. Loooks like a primitive version !!!
Odd-Arne Dahle 13 October, 2011 18:26
I've heard that geotagging function is not for 3GS. You need iPhone 4/4s to do this. Do not personally know why, if it is hardware or just that these phones are not given this permission. I have iPhone 4 and it works fine. You create a new reminder, then press the reminder you need geotag and control that it has the > sign after the text. Then you get different options on the reminder. Then there should be an option "Remind me". Then you may chose "location". Remember to create destination in contacts first. It do not operate the map when chosing the destination.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 21:05
Make sure you are creating new reminder not task. Click on top left three horizontal line icon on the left top corner under carrier and signal strength icon, then select reminder. Now create a new reminder
anonymous 14 October, 2011 02:52
Your tips are welcomed but can ANYONE that has this working state if this "location button" is running on their iPhone 3GS? It's not showing on my 3GS either.
anonymous 14 October, 2011 10:50
I have figured it for iPhone 4 in the uk, not sure if it's a uk problem or not....
Go to settings>mail, contacts, calendars then toggle the options in any accounts that were listed in the reminders app. I turned off reminders in both hotmail accounts that it used, locations now works all ok in reminders. But wouldn't have had a clue how to sort it without the above comments. Apple really know how to confuse!
anonymous 14 October, 2011 12:38
I have iphone 4 and the location based reminders works fine as deatiled in pics above
anonymous 14 October, 2011 14:03
What is the logic in restricting location reminders to addresses already in contacts? Most people visit places they don't save the postal addresses of, for example shops in the article above!! I don't even keep my home or work address in my phone because of security, so I'm going to have to sacrifice on or the other until an iOS programming bot flicks a switch and allows us to manually input addresses.
anonymous 14 October, 2011 21:47
I'm on a 3Gs in Canada, and I can't see the location button in a reminder, even after trying all these little tweaks.
anonymous 15 October, 2011 20:37
I have a question, what camera and Microphone did you use for this video? I am about to buy a camera and microphone..
anonymous 15 October, 2011 21:55
Definitely not working on 3GS. Have tried all the tricks above. If someone has had this work, please post again
anonymous 17 October, 2011 11:27
Could anyone who "has" got the locations componet of Reminders working on their apple device tell me if when the click on Locations in the Settings screen do they see "reminders" in the list of apps that are using locations.
I can see and turn on "reminders" in the iCloud setting, but "reminders" are not showing in the Locations Apps list.
TIA
anonymous 17 October, 2011 16:39
For all those folks with 3G or 3GS phones, apparently, in the 'read-me' that comes with iOS5 it states that location-based remiders are *only* for the iPhone 4 and 4S.
Found this out on the following apple discussion board:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3374979?start=30&tstart=0
Seems Apple restricted this feature to 4s and 4Ss as using location-based reminders means having the GPS on all the time which eats battery life and the 3GSs battery life is not as lengthy / big at the 4s and 4Ss.
anonymous 17 October, 2011 21:34
If the location opttion does not appear in your reminders and you are running MS Exchange, go to your mail account settings and switch off your reminders sync - Location option will now appear.
anonymous 18 October, 2011 04:10
when i select a location it says "cannot determine location" :((

Thanks !!!!!!! It works
anonymous 18 October, 2011 21:23
set up Reminders for three different locations on my iPhone 4 with iOS5. Not a whisper, doesn't work for me.
And as for the gimmicky lock screen camera; you now have the option of pushing the home button twice, then the camera icon, so three moves instead of two on the previous OS. Fumbling around to find the volume up button with a cover on your iPhone is a waste of time, photo opportunity will have gone by the time you find it.. Not impressed. Over 200 new features?! 200??? come off it!
anonymous 18 October, 2011 21:36
Who on earth wants Tesco in their list of contacts? I'm sticking to my paper lists thanks.
anonymous 18 October, 2011 21:39
Simply do this, simply do that. Hm.
anonymous 21 October, 2011 15:53
Doesn't work
anonymous 8 November, 2011 10:28
It doesnt work for me and i have the new phone. Ive done exactly what all the different web sites tell you to do and i can sit outside my coop for an hour and it still does not alert me. Grrrrrrrrr
anonymous 10 November, 2011 09:51
It's only for reminders not tasks. Hit the 3 lines top left & choose reminder. The default is tasks. Worked ok on my 4
anonymous 10 November, 2011 21:42
Huh? The three lines top left take you to your lists. Doesn't work, NADA, ZILCH, DIDDLY SQUAT
anonymous 10 November, 2011 21:58
Not working ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
anonymous 10 November, 2011 22:02
Waste of time, quicker to write a paper list anyway and you don't need to switch a paper list on in the store to read it
anonymous 10 November, 2011 22:22
Remind me not to bother with this non-functional feature
anonymous 5 December, 2011 12:27
Sort of, why bother making a demo on how to do something if you never let the camera capture the action you are performing? This is more like a card trick.
anonymous 3 January, 2012 21:03
There are two features within the Reminders app - Reminders and Tasks.
Tasks sync with MS Outlook Exchange and cannot be location-based. Turn 'Tasks' on or off with the Reminders toggle button in your Exchange account under Settings->Mail, Contact Calendars.
Reminders sync with iCloud and can be location-based. Turn 'Reminders' on or off with the Reminders toggle button in your iCloud account under Settings->iCloud.

I was able to get mine to work on iPhone 4. The problem I was seeing is the button was dimmed so you were not able to select it. I had restrictions enabled on my location services so that find my iPhone could not be turned off. For some reason this was preventing it from working... So if you have restrictions enabled this could be your problem too. I turned restrictions back on and it is still working ok. To change this you'll need to go to settings>general>restrictions and disable restrictions. Hope this helps everyone else too
anonymous 7 January, 2012 19:17
Just a heads up if your thinking about using geotracking with reminders. It drains you battery life quick as its constantly checking your location. So if you want the most battery life I'd suggest not using it. I've had a reminder enabled for a little over 4 hours now and my battey life is down to 36%. Not good if you ask me. I'm used to making it through the day without having to charge my phone until I go to bed. It's quite the energy hog...
anonymous 15 February, 2012 07:58
As with Siri, another poorly implemented App. At best a lot of faffing round, why would you want to create a contact for a supermarket rather than just select its location from the map. Incidentally, Reminders is unable to define my current location yet the Mapps app finds it immediately! Eats battery power

When Apple announced the new Siri software for the iphone 4s it was easy to just dismiss it as another company trying to get on board with the voice recognition gimmick we've seen companies trying to make work for years. But there are a couple of things to remember here: firstly, this is Apple, a brand that will always make something seem cool and work pretty well. And secondly, it's not a technology that it's had to develop fully in house, with the company buying voice recognition development app-maker Siri. We've played with some pretty advanced voice recognition software on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S2, so we've also taken a look to see how the same command is registered on both phones. Long pressing the home button will result in the Siri voic icon popping up - or alternatively, you can set the iPhone 4S to activate the service when you hold the phone up to your ear in standby mode, so you don't look as ridiculous when talking to your handset. From there, you've got quite a range of things you can achieve with speech alone, be it sending a message, playing a song (or even a playlist), setting the alarm, creating a reminder... we were very impressed with the range of options on offer. And the system is quick too - where with many other phones you have to open up the voice recognition function (often in a long winded way) and then wait for the beep to speak, Siri opens up in around a couple of seconds from anywhere in the phone. The voice recognition is pretty darn good too - we were straight away impressed with how many phrases it managed to get right on the first go, including some pretty obscure bits and pieces of speech. You do have to pronounce your words a little more clinically than you might do normally, but even garbled speech comes through pretty well. To put a number on it: we went through the list of functions Siri offers, and found that around one in three or four attempts went awry, which is miles better than the one in two we encounter on most other phones. However, before we get into the comparison, we should say this about Siri in the UK - the full range of services aren't available, and that's a real shame. This means you can't ask where the nearest McDonald's or petrol station is, a feature that's been talked up in the US. We do have high hopes that the same features will eventually be enabled in the UK, as it's just a matter of licensing the information and incorporating it into the system, but it will be annoying for a number of users to see that Siri comes back with 'I cannot do that' time and time again for cool functionality. But what it does do well is work out the context of what you're saying, something that most other voice recognition software fails to do. So if you say 'Tell Andy his hair looks amazing today' it will work out that you'll want to tell him by message, rather than asking what method you'd prefer to speak to him. Messaging isn't as straightforward as we'd like though, as using the 'Send message' command to a person in your address book will result in you being asked whether you'd like to do it using the phone number or email address - and there's no way to set a personalized choice.

Please do not play background music on your video tutorials - it is very distracting and I had to watch the video twice to get all the information. Not impressed
