How to update HTC Desire to Android 2.3 Gingerbread

CNET How To

So you've decided to bite the bullet and update your HTC Desire to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Hit play on the video above to watch a step-by-step walkthrough to make sure you don't go wrong -- it's a little more complicated than the usual over the air upgrade.

Before you proceed you should understand that all data will be wiped from your phone's internal memory. The Flashlight and Teeter apps won't be automatically reinstalled after the Gingerbread update due to space constraints, but they're supplied in the download should you want to squeeze them back on to your phone.

Backup your phone

It's essential that you backup any important data on your HTC Desire before attempting to sample the sweet delights of Gingerbread. Updating to Android 2.3 will wipe the phone's internal memory. Data stored on any SD cards is safe. Here are your options:

Complete backup: If you don't mind stumping up £3, MyBackup Pro offers a complete backup solution for all your messages, apps, application data and more. You'll need to check the documentation to see if there's anything that can't be backed up.

Text messaging: Text and picture messages can be backed up using the free SMS Backup+ app. It will export your SMS, MMS and call log entries to Gmail using a separate label and can later restore all but MMS back to your phone.

Syncing with Google: You're most likely already syncing important data, such as calendar, email and contacts, with Google apps. If you're not sure exactly what's being synced, check Google's configuring account sync and display options article to set it up.

Download the software

Get ready to give your broadband connection a thorough workout. Visit developer.htc.com and look for the ~161MB 'Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Upgrade for HTC Desire'.

HTC Desire Gingerbread download

You'll have to agree to the terms and conditions first.
 HTC Desire terms

Download it to your Windows PC and unzip it. Then unzip the HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade.zip file within that. Sorry, Mac users, this won't work for you. If anyone knows of a way of installing this via the SD card or some other method, let us know.
HTC Desire unzip

Those .apk files are software that won't be automatically installed with Gingerbread due to storage constraints. They can be added manually later if you want them. There's also a ZIP file containing the original wallpapers.

Run the installer

Ensure you're logged in to your PC as an administrator and that the HTC Sync software is installed. If you don't have it already, you'll find it here.

You'll also need to ensure the phone is set to sync when it's connected to your PC, rather than simply charging or acting as a storage device. Press the menu button, tap 'Settings', scroll down and tap 'Connect to PC', tap 'Default connection type' and then tap 'HTC Sync' and 'Done'. HTC Desire done

It's essential the upgrade process is not interrupted, so to be safe, quit any other software running on your PC and ensure your phone is set not to receive calls or messages. The quickest way to do this is to enter Airplane mode. Press the menu button, tap 'Settings', tap 'Wireless & networks', then tick the 'Airplane mode' box.

Connect the HTC Desire to a spare USB port on your PC. Ensure your computer recognises the phone, then double-click on the 'RUU_HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade (Gingerbread).exe' file and follow the on-screen prompts.

The first dialogue box tells you everything the software update will do for/to your phone, warns you (yet again) about its limitations, and ensures you are 'expert' enough to install it. Click 'Next'.

HTC Desire agreement

Tick the box that says you understand that your phone will we wiped, then click 'Next'.

HTC Desire gingerbread agreement

Tick the box that says you've connected your phone to your PC, then click 'Next'.

HTC Desire ROM update

Click the 'Update' button to update your phone's current version.

HTC Desire update button

Verify that's what you want to do by clicking 'Next'.

HTC Desire image version

Press 'Next' to confirm that your phone will be updated.

HTC Desire ROM image

A progress bar will appear showing how the installation is going. Don't use the phone or PC during this time.

If you're not logged in as an administrator the installation process will fail with no warning at all. You won't even get a chance to type in an admin password. If this happens, log in as an administrator and try again.

Restore your phone

Once the process is complete (it can take around 10 minutes, but ours updated more quickly) you'll see the following message on your PC.

HTC Desire congratulations

The HTC Desire will reboot and act like a brand new phone again.

All applications you previously downloaded from the Android Market should automatically restore to your phone once you supply your Google account information. You may have to sacrifice some apps if there's not enough room on the internal memory.

You'll need to restore your data from backup. If you used software such as MyBackup Pro or SMS Backup+, ensure it was reinstalled on your phone and then follow the instructions to restore the data you need.

Enjoy Gingerbread

The advantage of running Gingerbread on the HTC Desire, other than 'because you can', is negligible. A couple of apps (Flashlight and Teeter) have been removed, but can be reinstalled via HTC Sync, while Facebook fans will need to grab that from the Android Market.

Despite the warnings, SMS and MMS work just fine, and a quick perusal of the other standard apps suggest no problems with performance. The camera app crashed and caused a reboot on one occasion, but we don't think that's indicative of the phone's overall stability.

HTC Desire Gingerbread crash

We had about 128MB of internal storage spare after the upgrade.

I'm running Oxygen ROM on my HTC Desire and have been for a month or so. I was one of the people who jumped ship the moment HTC said they weren't updating the Desire to 2.3! Oxygen is essentially a free range version of Android with a few slight changes, but I don't regret rooting my phone as it now so much faster without the HTC Sense UI taking all the RAM up :)

Just installed Gingerbread Upgrade yesterday on my Desire. Went very smooth. I synced the phone using htc Sync and re-Synced again after the upgrade. All the data are ok.
So far it is running fine! I do not see any difference!
Only the battery drain is much less now!

It's not compatible with Mac. May I know why? As such, I didn't managed to upgrade to Gingerbread.

mine has a minor prob... whenever i press the volume it didnt respond quickly, i have to press it 2 to three times before it response.... but honestly i like the update, coz it speed up my fone nd drains my battery a little less than b4

Anonymous 4 August, 2011 10:15

I updated my desire with htc gingerbread rom. It really isn't any different, apart from things like putting the phone on its face to go to loudspeaker mode and small tweeks like that. I'm not even sure about the battery life being longer. It may be because I'm playing about with mine in work more, but mine seems like its draining more quickly.
I said this in another post, but the only reason to do this is bragging rights! HTC sense is nice, but it does eat a lot of memory. Also it looks exactly the same, keyboard etc is the sence one and not the gingerbread stock one.

one thing I saw was that after you;ve installed an app, if you try and move it to the SD, the first time you press the move to SD button, it fails, press it again and it works fine. wierd!

A new option called close all apps and restart phone is been added to power button. Let Met see wats new in this upgrade..

are you all stupid? The phone runs much faster now, the touch screen is much more responsive and if you benchmark the phone with Quadrant you can see that the results are double that of the HTC Desire results it has on record.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 4 August, 2011 14:04

Worked first time no probs, took about 30 mins from backing up phone data, downloading the HTC files, to phone rebooting and successfully running GingerCow.
Some nice new touches here and there, performance slightly (not massively for crying out loud) better.

Storage space is improved as I was able to throw a few extra Applications at my phone. I also added a good single press cache cleaner to help keep as much memory free as possible.

Don't know why the fuss! Does not take as long as some negative websites have tried to make out (hrs?! lol).

It works and all is good in the world of my HTC Desire : )

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 4 August, 2011 17:18

updated last night. No issues with all my apps that I've reinstalled. Took less than the estimated 10 mins. Unlock screen doesn't lag and is generally more responsive all around.

've had the failed SD move thing happen in froyo too. No biggy.

Don't bother doing this. Several sources have stated that doing this install has resulted in erratic and slow performance, and some have even lost the use of SMS and MMS.

If you're going to go out of your way to do this, then just root your Desire using Unrevoked, download ROM Manager from the Market, then search for and install Cyanogenmod 7 stable.

This will give you Gingerbread, your phone will run a lot faster, and there's no risk of losing SMS/MMS capabilities. You'll even get some cool features that you won't get with HTC's Gingerbread, thanks to having been rooted.

Hi,updated my Orange branded desire to gingerbread yesterday, took about from HTC developers site, took about half hour from sending my phone .overall have had no issues with any function of the phone it did free up some space removed Orange apps which were of no use anyway, but I was hoping for a bit more from gingerbread I don't see any real changes even my battery is about the same.Should I and do I need to install the other files that were with the 2.3 file ,if any body can tell me will they bring some changes to the phone.

@"Don't bother doing this"

"If you’re going to go out of your way"
This is WAY quicker than rooting your phone there is no "going out of your way" when comparing this method to going down the road of Rooting.

"no risk of loosing SMS"
There is a great risk of doing damage to your phone COMPLETELY and not just losing your SMS by rooting! Every site that has given tutorials on rooting has expressed how high risk rooting your phone is.

We all should know the benefits of Rooting by now and I am a big fan of it. But for those who just want to know their Desire is running GingerCow, this is the safest and quickest method.

No, I don’t work for Google, HTC or Android. lol

Yes I ran this update. Worked first go, no ongoing issues (with SMS or anything else) and phone performance has improved a little.

Is it absolutely necessary to update to 2.3.3? I'm considering getting a Desire and would like to know before I buy. I'd like to keep 2.2 if it isn't completely necessary to update to 2.3.3 but having that option of an update is good nonetheless.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 5 August, 2011 21:05

I had a go at this last night, and found it to be very easy. I suspected it would be - it's the first time I've done a ROM upgrade on an Android phone, but I've flashed ROMs like this on HTC's WinMo phones before, and it was a very similar procedure.

As long as you follow these instructions to the letter, and don't interrupt the process, you're very, very unlikely to do any permanent damage to your phone.

It all works just fine. First impressions are that there's not a *massive* amount of difference to most things, but I'm sure power management is *way* better, which is good, as I'm going camping for a few days soon...

In answer to the comment above, no you don't have to upgrade to 2.3, but 2.2 has some security issues which 2.3 fixes, apparently. Other than that, there isn't much difference, but I like playing around with alternative OSes, so I wanted to give it a try.

Hey all, I've installed ginger bread 2.3 day before yest. My phone is running much faster than before.. The apps download from android market is very fast. Also the apps from android market work terrible faster than ever before. I'm working on 2g mobile network. My network say the max speed provided will be only 32kbps but while running on android market apps the speed will gets boosted from 50kbps till 1mbps. Superb speed.
But I lost the mobile network on/off options in power button after installing this.

Let me see if there is anything else..

If you want to root your phone and get updates, do not update DO NOT UPDATE. Because then you have to wait for HTC to unlock your phone, and it will probaply take looooooong time.
I have been running android 2.34 since mai 2011 on a rooted phone with cyanogenmod 7.1.0. cyanogenmod.com.
And so have 400 000 others done..

No probs. Now boots (and shuts down) very much more quickly when turn the phone on. Really like the 'magnify' thing when editing text ( just like Apple). Available phone memory now 40Mb, before with same apps only 20 Mb available. noticed when moving Apps to SD it reports some of thenApp left in Phone. this is odd?
Think my WiFi is now less sensitive? Can only just see the WiFi with WiFi analyser from my bedroom, whereas before it was never a prob. might be coincidence? Anyone else noticed this?

Don't bother, the down sides are much worse than the benefits.
Good:- battery lasts longer, nearly twice as long in my case, easier to put apps on sd card.
Bad:- unreliable, crashes all the time, often to the stage where i have to remove the battery to stop a boot loop,
It crashes on 'market' so really difficult to add your apps, crashed this morning trying to add a contact? My phone is now 'as is' which is virtually useless.
My phone is 1 year old and unable to take a simple upgrade, it will be the last HTC i buy!

Anonymous's avatar

Joell, seems like you have buy a new phone because that issue is caused by your PVT version and there is no way back nor update fix for that board. My friend experience it too after upgrading to 2.3 and asked HTC but they already told it to the disclaimer before you upgrade. I'm sorry to hear that man.. //

Are others also experiencing problems with the OEM headset after the GB upgrade?
Because I do.
Always used my OEM headset without any problem. Since the upgrade to GB it looks like it isn't even inserted in the jack.
Also FM radio complaines about the headset because of the missing antenna.

I have recently loaded HTC's Gingerbread ROM onto my Desire and have to say the improvements are minimal. A friend owns a Desire S, and I like the extra functionality 2.3 brings to that phone. However, almost all of the good bits I was expecting are not present on my Desire after upgrading. It hasn't, however, negatively affected anything at all (apart from only having one wallpaper to choose from now......) A few of the pre loaded apps, as mentioned above, are also gone.
The phone is definitely quicker and smoother in operation now, but not by much. And the battery life may be slightly better, but it's not huge.
The icons in the notification bar are different, but the bar itself is unchanged. The main app drawer is unchanged.
The long press to select text is improved, now showing a magnified image and easy to select arrows.
A quick boot option is now present, which does work brilliantly.
Long pressing the power button brings a different menu up, with less functions.....!
The volume button operation icons and ring volume selection tones are different.
Less memory for app storage now, there was about 125mb free showing immediately after loading 2.3.
To sum up, not much improvement, although the speedier operation is very welcome. And it's not the scary, phone will be wrecked experience that HTC make it out to be!

back up and running with GB..simple walkthrough here..one notes though...

backed everything up with MyBackup (the 30 day free works fine if you backup to your SD card - which i then also copied the entire contents of, onto my PC, just to be sure..) the 2mb limit is for online backups.
when making the initial backup, i think it just creates a folder on your SD card called 'rerware', with all the backup info in it.
after updating, i had to go to the market to get the free version again in order to set off the restore process. when started, this seems to not find the correct folder to find the backups from. you can set it in the options easily enough though, and it should be set to the parent folder of the 'rerware' folder (mine was '/mnt/sdcard')

just have to make sure install apps from 3rd parties is set, in order for the restore to install your apps ;)

Updated my HTC Desire to Android 2.3 yesterday. Following the above procedure all went smoothly. After about 10 minutes the HTC rebooted running the new OS.
I restored my apps and settings using MyBackup Pro, re-synchronised with my gmail account and the phone is now back up and running better than before.
Major improvements noted, better connectivity, faster Web communications.
Conclusion, the above article is a little alarmist and the update is well worth doing

anonymous 26 August, 2011 23:07

A couple of hints:

If you had information stored in your own personal contact card (the first name in the "people" application), it will be lost. Back it up/copy it down somehow. All other contacts are synced with Gmail, but not this one.

The Market won't remember all of your free apps. You need to remember what free apps you had.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 27 August, 2011 02:10

Also, go into Gmail and check that the phone has been syncing your contacts recently. Evidently my phone hasn't been synchronising for the past 6 months or so. It turns out this was a common bug with HTC Sense on froyo. Damn.

Fortunately SMS Backup+ allocates names to every text message so I can re-enter a lot of my contacts... but what a pain in the butt.

Impecável. Consegui actualizar o meu Desire 2.2 para este novo 2.3

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 August, 2011 23:49

PS, gingerbread is nice. The graphics are smoother, there seems to be more memory space for apps, and there are a lot of minor bug fixes here and there. If you're the type to notice these things (and being a Cnet reader you probably are), then upgrade.

anonymous 29 August, 2011 17:12

Thanks for the guide. I've upgraded my Desire a few days ago and all is well (generally better than before). No issues with camera, and at last, I'm delighted to have finally got rid of the stock facebook app off my phone which has annoyed me just by being there since I got the phone as I was never going to use it!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 September, 2011 14:19

Hello,

I ve installed the update and it works fine. I will concur that it is slighly smoother and maybe the battery is a bit better.
The problem I ve got was the phone started answering or rejecting calls in my pocket on its own. Does anyone had the same issue? Or a solution? With 2.2 it did not do anything like that. It started when I upgraded to 2.3.

I called HTC and they tolled me that it is a beta and not a full version and thats why it does that.

Anyone else with the same problem? They also told that I could not downgrade neither. Whats up with that?

Thank you for any replies

anonymous's avatar

Seems to be a lot smoother and definitely a lot more space but anyone know how to see my apps on sd card please? They are there because I can see the files when I plug it into computer but they just don't show up. tried restarting, unmounting and mounting sd but nothing, usually with Froyo it says "updating SD card" or something along those lines but nothing now.

I didn't know there was a gingerbread update until I was in an O2 shop with a small glitch with my phone. Basically I coulodn't sing into Peep the twitter progarm on my Desire hence my friend stream was updating it. The guy in the shop said they might be bringing Gingerbread out for the Desire but he didn't know when. So a quick google for it when I got home revealed it had already been released. Bare this in mind I am not an expert by any means.
My Desire was an O2 branded phone so I was hesitent to try this, but I am glad to say it went smoothly and completed in less than 20 minutes. I then checked it and everything seemed fine, I then logged into the market and downloaded most of my apps again, noticing some took up less space on my internal drive as they did when it was running Froyo. I did notice a couple of apps were missinng but that didn't bother me as they were just odd programs for entertainment. All my games are ok and seem to run better. And it cleared the problem with Peep as well my friend stream is working fine now. The clock actually works as it shouls i.e. the spllit numbers drop down every minute as they would on a proper clock.
And in the settings menu I put it on fast start-up and wow it really is quick, less than 15 seconds for all wallpaper and apps to load, it used to take about 45 seconds. ( Mind you that was with the O2 software that has been erased). Hope this helps, but as it says here follow the on screen instructions carefully.

I've not been able to get my HTC Desire on Orange UK to USB Tether to a Windows 7 laptop after upgrading to Gingerbread. The phone has a data connection to Orange. I can browse from the phone. I can create a USB Tether when the phone has a WiFi connection. Disable the WiFi and the tethering stops. The phone won't tether via a mobile data connection. The minor benefits from Gingerbread don't make up for the loss of USB Tethering to me. HTC Support can't help. Neither can Orange (no surprise that Orange can't help!

downloaded the update and came within minutes of kicking of the official HTC Desire 2.3 upgrade but last minute I decided to root and flash another rom instead. Now running Gingerbread via Cyanogen Mod 7. Works great!

Try the HTC 2.3 upgrade above if you want to go with the flow or try something different to break your phone out of a no-choice OS ;)

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 31 October, 2011 17:27

Can I say I am pretty useless at this type of stuff but I took the plunge and followed instructions and was easy as pie. It does look and feel slightly better but tbh if you are unsure and are happy with 2.2 then you may as well keep what you have.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 18 November, 2011 19:23

Good instructions, very easy to follow. However the google back up didn't work so I lost all my apps, this isnt much of a problem, just download them again. The apps and games I had saved on my sd card have gone too? What was more of a problem was I forgot to back up my contacts, luckily I have an old back up phone so I just transferred them over. All in all can't see much different and was hoping Swype would be part of the update but it doesn't seem to be. All in all a good guide, but is the hassle really worth it?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 24 November, 2011 13:39

just done this on an orange branded HTC Desire (original 1 year old model) still in contract...took a bit of fiddling but worked a treat...very much like the fact that it now seems to switch GPS on and off when called for...all seems to be working for me including kaspersky

Things I learned on the way that I should have read and taken as fact ....
1) HTC Sync comes with the ADB drivers embeded now. This must be un-installed before installing hboot drivers etc
2) I rooted Foyo with revoked 3 and backed everything up with titanium backup, to find I lost root with gingerbread and couldn't restore ;-)
3) Finally Rooted gingerbread succesfully with the Revolution method to get S-OFF, installing the ClockworkMod recovery and then flashing their Zip file root update (in the FAQ)...it's now S-OFF and rooted

(had a gold card in the phone when I flashed gingerbread but not entirely convinced it was needed)

NOw I just need to shift everything to SD as it's full...

I just tried and after hours finished up with Error 151, which is described as:

ERROR [155~159]: IMAGE ERROR
One of these error messages will appear when you use the incorrect RUU to update and the image file size is larger than the Flash ROM size. In this case, download the correct RUU version and try again.

I have an Orange UK 2.2 currently. I only saw one general 2.3 download on the HTC site. Any idea where to get the correct RUU? from the above it seems like others have upgrade Orange phones ok.

I have tried four times now.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 December, 2011 15:31

@Seamus :- Download 7-zip, it's free and it can extract RAR files.

I updated my HTC today and it worked perfectly. When you download the RUU if you go down the disclaimer it says which HTC desires are not supported, its only certain regions that are not supported.

Before performing the update I emailed HTC and they told me that the update should work on any variant of the stock firmware as long as it hasn't been altered i.e. rooted.

So if you have rooted your phone there is a possibility that the update will cause problems with your phone.

I hope this helps :-)

probably a stupid question, but which file on my phone do I put the flashlight and teeter files from the main zip file and also the htc wallpapers. Thanks for any feedback

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 6 December, 2011 14:48

For the Apps just plug your phone into the PC and make sure its set to HTC Sync. Then click on the application installer in Sync and direct it the directory you stored the extracted update and select the apk file (you have to do this twice, once for each app). You need to make sure in application setting on your phone that you've got allow install from unknown sources checked otherwise it will not work.

As for the wallpapers, I didn't want them so I cant help there sorry.

Camera app I can confirm with you that Gingerbread version is playing up. Dodgy! Initially I thought maybe too many photos in my gallery, later on found out it wasn't. It keeps rebooting itself each time I took a photo. This Gingerbread is unreliable. Also it also said this Ginger version has more space. I totally disagree because I don't see any massive improvement on space wise.

My Android market comes up in dollars, not pounds, how do I change this?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 December, 2011 06:24

I have an incredibly short attention span. Literally minutes after installing Gingerbread (with no problems other than US market in UK) I though I could try to root the phone. I found the website below and managed to root the phone in under an hour. I now have S-Off and can use a custom ROM image. My only problems during rooting were that I could not access the boot menu. I did this by turning off Fast Boot in Settings --> Applications --> Fast Boot. Also in the clockwork recovery screen thingy my memory card refused to mount so I simply turned the phone off, took out the memory card, put it in my computer and transferred the files.

Well, have fun :)

I am an O2 pay monthly customer and the only thing which has me is the fact like some mentioned before me, the market is now in US $.

Is there a fix to get this resolved as I have tried the locations, language settings etc. without any luck.
Phoned O2 support, they advised it was not a supported Is for the phone, which I suppose is true, and therefor cannot assist me with any phone related queries.

Has anybody got a fix?

Hi
I upgraded to 2.3.3 all went fine... good guide thnx for that
1)But as mention earlier by others... Market app shows only $ and not £... , language option is only English US.
2) Also its been 2 weeks now and still the Market app has not updated it self to latest version which i had on 2.2, Currently my Market app version is 2.3.4.... i have tried below advise from google

For Android 1.6 - 2.3
Launch Android Market
Switch to the Home screen
Wait 5-10 minutes for Market to self-update
Re-launch Market

Source: http://support.google.com/androidmarket/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=190860

but this also dosen't work.

3) not all the installed app from the back up shows under my app option in market don't know why!

Could some one help pn above?

Works well - used the trial version of mybackup. It spent ages backing up photos on my SD card to my SD card (not very clever) and on restoring I discovered a number of apps missing and some of those that were restored lost their settings - don't rely on it.
Upgrade took less than 10 minutes. Backing up and restoring all apps and settings is still ongoing 24 hours later... don't rush into this one!
Do READ the legal blurb - there's a list of countries that this upgrade does not support including Arabic countries & North America so if you are in those territories and apply this upgrade expect things not to work. I'm guessing this is probably for very sound reasons like right-left text support and the different SMS/Network infrastructures in the US so don't think you know better - if they've not included support for a feature it''s probably going to be hard to add it later after you stuff your handset!

This article (and the comments) encouraged me to have a go. I had previously tried and failed to produce a gold card to de-brand an Orange HTC Desire. This method had the side effect of doing that as well. I had some delay where I was just getting the text "Sending..." instead of a progress bar - for about an hour. Eventually I realised it hadn't started and I pulled the USB cable (!) and followed the instructions about removing the battery to recover.
Next I replaced the cable with the genuine HTC one and disabled the firewall as well as then virus checker. I don't now if that was the answer but now it worked smoothly.

Hi Guys,

The update process is very simple and took only 2 minutes to finish on the phone.

It speeds it up a bit but that is also true because its a fresh install. No user installed background memory hugging processes running.

One Major drawback is that it limits the initial free mem available for app install to 123 MB from 159 MB. So to get more space to install stuff install a Custom ROM.

However, I just wanted to get rid of network branding and try out 2.3 so in that sense its cool.

Very straight forward upgrade. Took less than 10 minutes to complete for me, including the phone setup after completion. I could care less about the apps I had downloaded, as I just downloaded the ones i really needed again. Thanks.

As for the previous post, I cannot find in the language or keyboard sections where it would support Arabic. It's just not listed in there, sorry mate.

I tried to find the files myself couple of times.. didn't succeed.. then I mailed HTC .. they could not find it either but they were very nice ;-) Then they called trying to help , which is very nice. They forward the call do a different department..After I hand up , I found out the link of the files just here, in one of the above comments.

Good luck to those who went through similar frustrations:
( lesson learned : read all the comments.. it is usually there)

Used HTC Android Phone ROM Update Utility 1.0.3.2011 and ended up with "Error [152]: Image Update Error - The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone."
I can't get it to recover either. Any help to get it back to where it was before would be much appreciated.
