How to trim your SIM to iPhone 5 nano-SIM size

CNET How To

If you're lucky enough to have bagged an iPhone 5 and are wondering how to squeeze your current SIM card or micro-SIM into that teeny-tiny slot, then you'll need artistic precision and the slicey dicey skills you picked up in biology class, as well as a head for geometry.

I took this exam, passed with flying colours and will show my workings out below (for you to copy, because we're friends, right?).

Since the nano-SIM is not only smaller than a standard SIM but also 12 per cent thinner, there was some debate as to whether you'd be able to go all Edward Scissorhands on your current chip, in the same way you could to create a micro-SIM. The proactive chaps over at network GiffGaff gave it a shot though, and discovered that the iPhone 5 tray is perfectly capable of handling a SIM of standard girth.

It may be the case that future phones requiring a nano-SIM may not have left room for these extra millimetres though, in which case, head over to our pals at CNET Asia to discover how to painstakingly sand your SIM down to size.

To cut or not to cut

Before you go any further, a word of warning. It's important to remember that there are always risks if you cut your SIM card. When my own GiffGaff micro-SIM arrived many months ago, it had been damaged in the shrinking process and my iPhone wouldn't recognise it, leaving me without a phone for several days. The danger that you might irreparably damage your SIM is even greater when you're trying to cut it down to nano size, as you'll have no choice but to snip into the metal contact that's placed on top of the chip.

I offer no guarantees that this will work, and it's likely that if it doesn't, your network isn't going to be terribly sympathetic either. Still, if you're feeling brave, or maybe just a little desperate, read on, courageous scissor wielder.

Ingredients

The process is much the same as cutting your SIM to micro dimensions, and so no extra equipment is required, just the following:

Nano SIM DIY

  • 1x iPhone 5 (unlocked)
  • 1x standard SIM card or micro-SIM card
  • 1x pokey stick device
  • 1x scissors
  • 1x super-steady pair of hands

Study up

First things first: grab hold of your pokey stick thingy that will have come in your new iPhone's box -- or a paperclip if you've already lost it down the back of the sofa -- and jiggle it about in the tiny hole on the side of your phone.

The nano-SIM fits in the caddy with the gold chip facing downwards. Note the chamfered corner to make sure the card is inserted the right way around.

Nano SIM DIY

I cut down two SIMs in my experiment -- one Vodafone, one GiffGaff. To make your nano-SIM, you'll have to trim down the metal, but as long as you don't actually touch the chip, which as you can see from the picture (in which I have dissected an old SIM using all of my GCSE science skills), is much smaller than the metal area itself.

Nano SIM DIY

I had a real, non-DIY nano-SIM provided by O2 to measure mine up against and compare it to as I went along. You probably won't have that, so look carefully at the picture (below right), and make sure you use the SIM tray as a guide the whole way through. Pens don't work all that well on cheapy SIM plastic, but even the faintest trace of an outline can make the difference between nano-SIM DIY success and failure -- so give it a go.

Nano SIM DIY

All SIMs look slightly different, so a bit of nouse and detective work is required to figure out where exactly the chip is hiding within the metal. You''ll usually find the chip at the end of the metal furthest away from the angled corner of your SIM card, or in the middle of the brackets if your SIM has them.

Take the plunge

There's a Swahili phrase, 'pole pole', which means 'gently gently, slowly slowly' and this is exactly how you should go about chopping up your SIM. Better to trim too little than too much, as you don't want to damage the chip. Neither do you want it to be in any way too small. The nano-SIM needs to sit snugly in the tray or it will wiggle about and not make proper and consistent contact with your phone.

On the GiffGaff SIM, I used the faint golden rectangle that was about the size of a SIM chip to work out how far down it was safe to cut, but on the Vodafone SIM I hazarded a guess that the bracket-like lines were my primary clue. I ran my scissors along the outermost points of the brackets, being careful not to go over the lines (using my GCSE geography colouring-in skills). When I later cracked the SIM open, I discovered that my guesswork was spot-on.

Nano SIM DIY

When it comes to cutting vertically, take note of the squiggly pattern in the middle and use that as a guide -- don't trim any further in than that. I first trimmed to the very edge of the metal, before using the two lines outside the central squiggly pattern as guides and snipped vertically, making sure I didn't cross the lines.

Nano SIM DIY

The metal area on the GiffGaff SIM I used was already the right width, so fortunately I could cut (still oh-so-carefully) up the plastic sides and leave the middle bit be. One final thing is to remember which end of the SIM card was originally lacking a right-angled corner, as the final step in creating your nano-SIM is to make a tiny diagonal snip to fit your SIM into the tray.

Nano SIM DIY

The moment of truth

If your SIM fits and if you've looked through the leftover detritus and not discovered anything that looks alarmingly like an electronic chip, it's time to test your new nano-SIM in your phone.

Without being too smug, both of mine worked perfectly and I dearly hope yours did too. If you've slotted it in and your phone is reading something like 'No service' or 'SIM not recognised' or 'No SIM installed', then I'm sorry to tell you that this might be the end of your SIM card's life.

Nano SIM DIY

If you're considering slicing up your SIM then best of luck! And be sure to only use scissors when being supervised by a responsible adult. How did your SIM fare when it went under the knife? Chip in with your story in the comments below or cut across to our Facebook page.

I thought it was a GIFFGAFF sim card... not O2....!!!

@Daniel Rawr
It is a giffgaff SIM? Awesome network anyways.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 25 September, 2012 22:10

worked flawlessly.thank you very much!!!

anonymous 26 September, 2012 04:25

@Daniel Rawr
It IS a giffgaff SIM that is being used.
giffgaff is not an official Apple carrier, so because giffgaff runs on the O2 network, iphones display O2 on the screen instead, even though it is operating on the giffgaff network.

Ha! It works. Extraordinary.

anonymous 26 September, 2012 08:56

Worked perfectly, thanks! My advice is, take it bit by bit. I went overboard when I cut my last sim down to a micro and the thing used to move around a bit and lose contact. Not much risk of that happening in the tiny space left for the nano but the experience made me cautious

does this process work for a india vodafon sim? i m really going crazy to know.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 September, 2012 13:03

if you can buy an iphone in India ...... then sure it will work................. hahahhah

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 September, 2012 13:21

Why are you showing an IPhne 4S instead of iPhone 5 in your pictures?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 September, 2012 14:19

why would you want to do this when SIMs from your network provider are free?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 September, 2012 14:55

Hey anonymous. That's a 5, not a 4s. Notice the camera placement. Stop nit-picking the article and then being wrong.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 September, 2012 14:58

If you think that's an iPhone 4S in the pictures you're blind... 4S doesn't have 5 rows of icons.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 September, 2012 17:31

This destroyed my O2 Deutschland SIM (was originally a mini-sim, trimmed to micro-sim for ip4S). When I made it nano-sized, it destroyed the chip inside.

Don't they have sim cutters for this? $15 bucks on meritline

anonymous 27 September, 2012 08:29

I live in India and i bought my iph5 in the states. I tried and tested it in the US before getting it here and it worked fine with the micro sim cut into a nano. I have no idea why isnt it working in my case on the iph5 now when in India. Strangely after carefully cutting it down to the right size that is a micro sim into a nano sim on inserting it into my phone I get network services and am able to get data connection but no cellular connection. Its weird because first the phone should work then the data in normal cases. i have destroyed 3 sims already and clueless as to what to do because in each case the sim worked and I could use the internet and other data services but no calls. Am harrowed.

Why is Apple so backward to ruin every standard there exists in the industry? Who needs a nanoSIM? Does work better? No. It is too small and inconvenient. It is incompatible. Apple, go eat dirt :/.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 2 October, 2012 16:47

Everything hitech is getting smaller, so does SIM!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 October, 2012 20:36

Katie, followed your detailed guidance with 100% success. One small tip is if you have an old nano sim place that over your Micro sim and draw around it with a fine lead propelling pencil (0.5mm). This marks the sim size accurately and allows for a more accurate cut.

Unsure as to why people cut their sim cards. I went to the apple store yesterday and bought my Iphone 5. They provided me with a free replacement Nano sim card and transfered my number for me - right in the store - and best of all for FREE!

If i would have gone to the t-mobile store they would have charged me £10. Another great service from Apple!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 October, 2012 18:38

worked an absolute treat! The first time i put it in it said no sim :( so i trimmed a bit more then put it back in and WOO!! Thank you very much

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 October, 2012 19:17

Just cut it all the way to metal

No need to thin it

Works best in iPhone 5

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 October, 2012 22:07

Or just get a micro sim cutter from fleabay. They only cost around £3.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 25 October, 2012 22:14

I went to my provider and said i needed a nano simcard- they gave me one free and an adapter to use it in a micro and normal sim card. A lot easier than fiddling round wiht scissors and i can put my sim card in my iphone or my One X:)

I'm a tad clumsy. So I elected to use a fine file as well ( e.g. fine nail file, or fine diamond file for metal), certainly slowly slowly is the way.

Great directions, many thanks.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 December, 2012 03:11

Thanks, gave me the confidence to take the plunge. Cut an airtel sim(in india) , from micro sim to a nano sim size. There has to be some difference in dimension between the micro sim cut in the article above, and the one i Used. My experiments ( i cut two sims, successfully) is that while you have to cut the three edges as closeto the metal as possible, you have to leave about one mm at the top. You dont have to cut into the metal at any stage. Then you chamfer it, and try placing it on the ipad tray. Make minor adjustments, and you have a nano sim.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 December, 2012 16:26

No service :/

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 December, 2012 01:36

Aha! I was so worrried about where to cut into the metal of my old style mini sim (like your giff gaff one), I figured the curved lines might be a guide but wasnt quite sure. I've cut it just outside those curved lines on top and bottom and then along the plastic metal join on either side and it works, thank you!!
P.s. micros sim and nano sim have the same size metal piece generally which is why the airtel india micro sim mentioned in a previous post (anonymous 16 December) did not involve cutting into metal.
Mini sim users will proably need to cut (very carefully) into metal.
Kind regards,
SB

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 December, 2012 01:44

Oh forgot to add, use a sharpie marker to mark the back of the sim with an arrow pointing to the corner to be chamfered later. Make sure the arrow fits inside the nano sim size or you'll cut it off and have to guess. When metal chip face up its the top right and when metal chip face down its the top left.
Kind regards,
SB

I BOUGHT A MICROSIM AND IT DIDN'T WORK

YOU'RE RUINING MY LIFE

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 December, 2012 16:41

This worked beautifully. I have a recommendation - instead of cutting too close, cut a little and use a nail file to file the sim down to size. This saves a lot of trouble.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 27 December, 2012 20:19

Worked, I was in line 1-2hrs for the iPhone 5, and then i realized that I needed a smaller simcard..

It IS A IPHONE 5, Lol, no idea...
Works fine, in Aussie we have just started having LTE/4G rolled out for prepaid, But,... Only one has a micro and the other only nano for LTE..
I want to put my nano sim in the micro converter adapter/ and use in my iPad 4th Gen, I'm worried that it will fall out of the adapter as its not held in or "sandwiched the same as the micro sim in the sim tray..
Anyone know if this "can even happen"? Or if I'm being to paranoid, just don't want a nano sim floating round inside the internals of my iPad 4..
Anyone tried? Or know if it can or can't?

I've found it easier to use a cutter and a small hammer. This way the cut is more precise, very straight and do not warp the chip as when usin scissors. Carefulli mark the cut zone with a pencil and do some work with the cutter and a rule in order to create a ditch. Then position the cutter and whamm! Of course your best bet is an inexpensive nano-sim cutter. You'll probably will need to sand a little on both sides of the chip, but don't get very enthusiastic about it; just a little, with a 400 sandpaper, is enough. This step is mandatory wathever means you used to cut the chip, for the last thing you'll want is to get the tiny chip stuck in the phone's drawer.
