One of Android's biggest strengths is that it's an open source operating system, which means that anyone with programming talent can potentially tinker with the code and make it even better. With that in mind, we've complied this handy guide for gaining root access on what is arguably our favourite Android handset: the Samsung Galaxy S2.
Read through our guide below, or watch the handy video above that shows you how it's done.
A large number of custom operating systems -- referred to by seasoned hackers as 'ROMs' -- have been created which not only remove unwanted bloatware installed by hardware manufacturers, but also speed up your handset and boast awesome new features.
However, all Android phones come locked-down by default, which means you can only install firmware updates that have been officially sanctioned by the manufacturer or your network provider. To tap into the wonderful world of Android customsation, you'll need to gain root access to your phone.
While it all sounds a bit clandestine and spooky, getting root access is just like having admin privileges on a computer. It allows you to change settings and tinker with elements of your phone's software that are usually out of bounds. A very simple example is being able to alter the boot-up animation that comes pre-loaded on your device.
Although it's not quite as difficult as playing a game of Angry Birds blindfolded, rooting your phone isn't for the weak-willed.
Before we proceed, it's important that we outline the risks involved here. Although in the case of the Galaxy S2 the rooting process is usually reversible, messing about with the inner-workings of your phone's software immediately invalidates your warranty. It may break your phone completely. CNET UK takes no responsibility for any harm that may befall your beloved handset as a consequence of you acting on the steps we've outlined below.
Step 1: Grab everything you need

Before you do anything, make sure you've downloaded and installed Samsung's Kies application, as it contains the necessary drivers for allowing your phone to communicate with your computer. You can grab the installation file from Samsung's website.
Next up is Odin3, which can be downloaded from here.
You'll also need an insecure kernel, which can you get from here. Although it's recommended that you pick a kernel with a code as close as possible to the one your phone has already (to check this, go to Settings > Applications > About Phone, and you'll see it under Kernel Version), it's not strictly required as you can reload a secure kernel once the whole rooting procedure is done and dusted.
Finally, you need the piece of software that does the magic: S2 Root. Grab it from here. Are you all sitting comfortably? Let's roll.
Step 2: Enable USB debugging

This is important. Unless this feature is enabled on your handset, you won't be able to proceed. Go to Settings > Applications > Development, and make sure the 'Enable USB Debugging' box is ticked. Once this is done, give yourself a pat on the back and move onto Step 3.
Step 3: Put the phone into Download Mode

Turn off your phone. Hold down the Volume down button, Home button and Power button. The phone will reboot and you should see a screen warning of the dangers of installing custom OS software. If you are happy to proceed at your own risk, press the volume up key to place the phone in Download Mode and you'll be presented with Andy the Android, in all his luminous green splendor.
Step 4: Load up the insecure kernel using Odin3

Use your USB cable to connect your Galaxy S2 to your PC. Run the freshly-downloaded Odin3 application on your computer. You should notice that the box in the top left of the Odin interface is yellow, which means your phone has been successfully recognised. You should now check that only the 'Auto Reboot' and 'F. Reset Time' check boxes are ticked in Odin's settings.
Press the PDA button in Odin3 and then select the kernel you obtained earlier. Take a deep breath and click the 'Start' button. Once the process is complete your phone will switch itself off and Odin3 should display a green 'PASS' notification on your computer's screen.

Your phone may reboot itself, but if it displays the battery charging icon you will need to manually switch it back on. When the standard Galaxy S2 boot screen appears, you should have a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark at the bottom of the display, indicating that you are running an insecure kernel (which you already know).
Step 5: Root using S2 Root
Keep your phone connected and wait for it to properly reboot itself. Once it has, start up S2 Root. You'll get a little warning message asking if you have flashed an insecure kernel and enabled USB debugging -- which, if you've been awake during this guide, you will already have done. Click OK.
If you're running Windows XP then you may find that you're missing some Microsoft .net Framework files that are required to run S2 Root. Fear not, however -- you can grab them from here.
S2 Root boasts a mercifully simple interface with nice, friendly buttons that say things like 'ROOT' and 'UNROOT', making it pretty easy to use. No prizes for guessing which one you need to click on now.

Once the phone has fully rebooted, you will find that you now have root access and the all-important Superuser app (which allows you to give other applications root privilages) has been installed. You can spot it in your app drawer -- it's the one with the Android-style skull and crossbones icon. If it hasn't appeared, try repeating this step a second time.
Step 6: Reload a secure kernel (optional)
Because you're still running an insecure kernel, you'll keep getting that annoying warning triangle every time you boot the phone up. It's not actually detrimental to your phone's functionality, but if you'd rather remove it you can grab a secure kernel from here and load it up using the instructions outlined previously in Step 4.
Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of a rooted Samsung Galaxy S2. If you're feeling particularly brave then you should download ROM Manager Premium, which allows you to load up new operating systems, backup your existing ROM and much more - but that's a whole different guide entirely.
Step 7: Changing your mind
Should you for some reason wish to rescind root access then all you need do is follow Step 4 to re-load the insecure kernel and click the 'Unroot' button in the S2 Root application.

Instead of loading a secure rom to get rid of the triangle at boot, but a USB JIG from eBay for a couple of pounds and it clears it in seconds.
Also a handy tool to have if you ever manage to brick your phone.

Hi guys, I have done step 4 correctly and when I am starting step 5 running the S2 Rooter, it prompts the warning dialog box stating that you have to run an insure kernel.. when I clicked 'OK', it prompts 'Device is not connected' where I have not touched any wiring or cables and it's definitely connected as my phone is being charged and in USB mode as well.. anyone can advise please?

Works absolutely perfectly. Follow instructions to the letter and you won't be disappointed. Also the 'Super User' app has a different icon. It's not a skull and crossbones. I almost rerooted my device because I couldn't find it.
It's just a little green Android head. Have a really good look for it before rerooting if it wasn't there the first time!!

I got stuck at Step 5 of this tutorial. When starting "S2 Root", a window called "AMT Notification" opens, with the message "Welcome to S2 Root! (c) Gaz 2011", and the window freezes at this message.
I've installed the .NET framework and restarted my computer. Can anyone suggest how to get around this problem? Thanks!
anonymous 7 October, 2011 08:48
Thank so much. Success!!
Is it need to be rooted again if we update software in Software update of the SGS2?
anonymous 7 October, 2011 18:58
I was a bit nervous tinking with my brand spanking new S2, but I read the instructions a few times and BAM! Everything worked like a charm. Cheers for this!

anonymous 9 October, 2011 19:20
I've been following the instructions to the letter, but I can't see the 'Superuser' icon. Not the skull & crossbones or anything. I've tried it several times now, but it's not installing.
What am I missing?
anonymous 11 October, 2011 19:37

anonymous 12 October, 2011 20:10
Hello,
I have a samsung galaxy s II GT-I9100M, and I followed very closely your steps (after downloading the Odin3, S2Root and the insecure kernel version GT-I9100M_UGKG2_insecure). noting that my original version was; 2.6.35.7-I9100MUGKG2-CL371789dh130.yoo@SEP-48#2. However, after doing the step 4, I got exactly that boot screen with the yellow triangle (with GT-I9100 and not GT-I9100M), and my phone is stacked on that screen, and I can not do anything. Moreover, my phone is undetectable by my pc (with win7). please, can you help me to solve this problem. thank you in advance.
anonymous 13 October, 2011 14:49
Worked perfectly well!
anonymous 15 October, 2011 00:50
This tutorial is problematic...
1) Yes, ROM Manager installs, but it doesn't work properly. It throws signature verification errors when trying to do anything (ie. backup and boot to ClockworkMod recovery).
2) Unroot in S2 Root app is not working!
I want to UNROOT so I can start again using an ALTERNATIVE root method as recommended on xda-developers.
anonymous 15 October, 2011 12:32

Wholy Moses!
I've newer seen so many clever instructions gathered in a single flow combined with a video, text and lots of pictures ... which I had to read and re-read plenty of times before I was ready to go ...
But then I took my deep breath and followed the Good Guys ... word by word
I'm so much very impressed.
I thank you for your brilliant work, each and every one of you!

After having rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 on 26th October I've got that experience, that it takes the phone 10-15 seconds to dail a number after pressing the lift off button.

Followed instructions exactly. Tried to use S2 Root
'This is for Samsung devices only!'
But I'm using a Galaxy S2...
anonymous 25 December, 2011 14:16
Okay so unplugging and replugging the USB seems to have fixed it. My phone is rooted, however my original intent is to stop my camera from making that extremely loud shutter sound. Anyone know how to go about that? I can use a file browser app to see the system files shutter_sound.ogg or something like that but I cannot move or delete it.
Any help?
anonymous 28 December, 2011 16:27
For anyone having problems with S2 Root saying "not connected", ensure S2 Root.exe is running on the PC itself. If you launch it from a network drive, you'll get that message.
anonymous 29 December, 2011 18:39
Sorry, I meant it has to be launched from the PC, not a network drive (obviously it'll be running on it)!
anonymous 30 December, 2011 18:22
Thanks! it worked perfectly!
anonymous 1 January, 2012 18:46

Excellent! Just successfully rooted my S2 with the XWKI4 insecure kernel following this guide...
Used:
ODIN v1.85
S2 Root & Installed Samsung Kies
Running Windows 7 Ultimate.
Was a little nervous about bricking my phone as there are loads of guides with varied instructions but the risk paid off. Nice! :-) Hope this comment might put your mind at ease if you're thinking about the same.

anonymous 24 February, 2012 16:44
Just re-rooted my phone following a software update from Kies to 2.3.5 and it works perfectly (again)
Like mentioned above guys and girls, follow the instructions... also, make sure you grab an insecure kernel that is close to your actual kernel. in my case KK1 I used KK2 as this was the closest match.
anonymous 25 February, 2012 10:22
Hi everyone!

Can anybody tell me how to use facebook, twitter and skype on galaxy s2 inside china? tnks
anonymous 14 March, 2012 09:14
hi everyone just got an idea on whatr could solve many of your problems no matter what they are,
now some of you know that you are following instructions to the letter but it isnt working along the way.
here is one simple thing that i believe might actually fix it. try downloading the latest firmware, using either kies or normal over the air download. Im not sure if this willl work but with it being same phone and some people on same networks the only variable i believe that could cause problems is the software you are currently running.
also for using in another country if i remember properly its a setting you change near data roaming on the settings on your phone. change it from national to worldwide i think it is and should work.
amg1980 14 March, 2012 18:15
i forgot to done step 2. my phone just show the picture that it has mean the connection between phone & pc is lost so the phone is locked in this situation.
anonymous 18 March, 2012 16:53
The insecure kernel what type of file is this? is it "tar." or is it "zip."

Ok I have a problem. I flashed in my insecure kernel, and my computer stopped recognising my phone. So I shut my phone off. And instead of going off it showed the battery charging logo, followed my an empty battery, exclaimation mark and thermometre!. (My phone was not connected to anything at this point) and it wouldn't turn back on. so I got it back into download mode, flashed in the original kernal, hey ho works connects to my pc however if I turn it off same thing, same logos and won't switch on. So ever time my phone dies I need to reflash the kernal to get itto start upagain!

I am almost complete but keep getting a "Device not connected! Please connect the USB cable and try again" sign. What should I do? Is my phone broken now?
anonymous 5 April, 2012 09:45
did all this by the instructions very easily looks and sounds more complicated than it actually is.
what i would advise though in my view is don`t do it by 64bit windows 7 32bit is far more stable even samsung admit that they have`nt 64bit drivers sorted yet!!!!
even got rid of annoying yellow triangle by installing older bootloader.again very easy.
thanks for tutorial.

Does it erase any data (apps/messages/etc) from the phone?
anonymous 12 April, 2012 23:30
after following the instructions i thought that i'd bricked my phone but was able to recover using I9100XWKE7_CL215725_REV02_user_low file at the bottom of the unsecure kernal link.

PLEASE NEED HELP
I got to step 5 but nothing happened. I restarted it manually but it always goes to the battery charging screen when it's connected via USB, so i disconnect and started it up, now the start up logo appears with the triangle BUT when I run S2 Root.exe it gives me the warning and then just says "device not connected! please connect USB cable and try again!"
No matter how many times I try to restart it it wont connect and is stuck on the logo with the triangle!!! D:
Please someone help, i know my warranty's now screwed but I'd rather not have to (manually) drop my phone to make an insurance claim :s
If anyone knows how I could fix this, or has ANY ideas please comment D' :

^^^
Continued..
Just read through the comments and realized others to have this issue.
I tried re-flashing it with another similar one but it fails the odin process. Will try flashing again with I9100XWKE7_CL215725_REV02_user_low, fingers crossed..

Thanks for nothing - I tried to root my Samsung S2. I followed your instuctions to the letter, but after step 5, my phone just constantly displays the Samsung logo with the yellow triangle.
I have tried to unroot the phone as per your instructions but without any change to my phone.
This instruction process appears, because of me and many others failing to root and fatally damaging their phones, appears to be wrong and not of a useable nature.
I trusted your instuctions, but I have been very badly let down.

hi i tried to root my phone after loading the insecure kernel you said we should wait for the phone to boot up but it didnt it got stuck on the s2 logo with yellow thingy i didnt know what to do so i got into download mode again and loaded a secure one and flashed it but still stuck i would try anything thats safe but i dont want my pics and music to be deleted( if needed no problem) what should i do please help me cnet
anonymous 14 May, 2012 01:15
the solution to "Device not connected! Please connect the USB cable and try again"
first you need a software called USBDeview.
http://download.cnet.com/USBDeview/3000-2094_4-10614190.html
1) disconnected the phone.
2) removed all drivers related to phone with use of USBDeview
3) installed Kies
4) loaded Kies
5) selected “Tools > Troubleshoot connection error” and waited, operation took several minutes
6) connected phone in MTP mode (USB Debug mode was off). Some drivers installed automatically.
7) disconnected phone and reconnected it with USB Debug mode on. More drivers installed automatically (including Samsung Android ADB Interface)
8) restarted the computer.

Where am I going wrong?
anonymous 25 May, 2012 02:18
I think my phones bricked or something....
I followed the Exact guide.
Found kernel ID. Found the match file for it.
Put phone in usb debugging mode
Rebooted to download mode
opened odin
found that file and selected it
all finished.... passed
But now its stuck on the screen with yellow exclamation mark. Wont pass it. Had phone on for an hour and its still stuck on that screen.... any advice?
thanks
