How to maximise your Samsung Galaxy S3's battery life

CNET How To

On paper, a smart phone will beat a regular phone in every single area except for one -- battery life. At least there are a few things that you can do to improve your Samsung Galaxy S3's staying power and extend your fun time with your cherished new mobile.

That big, bright, show-off screen and beefy processor will have your brawny gadget wheezing like a weightlifter running the steeplechase in no time. If you play games, stream videos or fiddle with apps on your daily commute, don't be surprised to soon witness the dispiriting sight of the battery indicator flashing red.

When you're running so many processes at once, you're bound to drain the power fairly quickly. So follow these simple steps to eke out more juice from your S3.

1. Use the 'Power saving' option

Samsung Galaxy S3 battery life: power saving

The Galaxy S3 comes with a built-in 'Power saving' option, which is the logical first port of call because it's disabled by default when you first use the phone. When enabled, it will limit the maximum CPU speed, lower the screen power and change background colours throughout your system apps in order to save as much power as possible.

To enable power saving, all you have to do is go to Settings and toggle the 'Power saving' switch.

2. Alter your display's colour profile

Samsung Galaxy S3 battery life: screen mode

On certain types of displays, such as the AMOLED screen in the Galaxy S3, some colour profiles will use less power than others. For example, black will use less power than white. So if you have a black background then your phone should conserve battery a little better.

The closest feature that the Galaxy S3 has to a colour profile editor is the 'Screen mode' option in Settings. You can get to this by going to Settings > Display > Screen mode. It will allow you to choose from four different profiles.

There are a few third-party apps available that will give you further customisation options, but some require root access. A popular desktop app called f.lux is making its way over to Android soon as well, so keep an eye out for that.

3. Adjust your screen brightness

Samsung Galaxy S3 battery life: brightness

The default brightness setting on phones may look good, but it's a big battery killer if you're constantly checking Facebook and Twitter throughout the day.

If you're indoors, you probably don't need the brightness set too high. You can easily change it by going to Settings > Display > Brightness and adjusting the slider until it's set to an acceptable level.

When it comes to battery life, low brightness is better, but you may want to take advantage of the 'Automatic brightness' option so that your Galaxy S3 will automatically become brighter when you're out in the sun.

4. Change the screen timeout settings

Samsung Galaxy S3 battery life: screen timeout

Samsung has included a lot of clever features in the Galaxy S3, such as the ability to tell whether or not you're looking at the phone directly and adjusting the display as necessary. But if you have this feature turned off, you'll want to check your screen timeout settings.

You can find the screen timeout option by going to Settings > Display > Screen timeout and adjusting the settings so that the screen will turn itself off after you've been inactive for a certain amount of time.

Again, lower values are better for battery life, as your phone will conserve power by switching off the display when it isn't needed.

5. Disable any radios you aren't using

Samsung Galaxy S3 battery life: screen timeoutWi-Fi settings

When radios such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled, they're constantly scanning for devices and making themselves available even if you aren't currently using them.

Turning off these radios is as easy as pulling down the notification bar and switching the toggles at the top of the screen. Alternatively, you could go to Settings and turn them on and off here instead.

I don't think you really need to fiddle about to preserve the battery life. Mine easily lasts a full day which moderate/heavy use :).

CNET is there any way to change my display name, I am no longer using a Windows Phone :(

anonymous 14 July, 2012 10:02

Battery life on this unit is unacceptable. I have to charge 2-3 to Mets daily with moderate usage. No gaming just web surfing. Never a problem like this with my blackberry. Also the phone reception is also poor even with Verizon.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 July, 2012 15:16

I have the exact same issue. Got my phone 4 days ago. I also bought 2 extra batteries. All my batteries only lasted about 4 hrs and 50 minutes with medium with medium usage, I.e. performing settings update in contacts, some browsing, and my kid was playing angry bird for about half hour. Yesterday I ued up ALL 3 batteries from 6am - 9pm. This was all ith wifi and blue tooth off, auto brightness for most time (min brightness for about 4 hrs). Is my phone defected?

Addtl issues are:
- backup sync seemed to duplicate my contacts
- often crashes during random actions, e.g., games, regular browsing, contact searches
- in accurate battery indicator

Hi I have brought this phone recently, and I am having problems. Can anyone help me, the problem is that when I am making a call the phone light switch off after few sec, but in background the is on call. And I tried to close the call but it does allow me to turn the phone on so. What shall I do? I hav brought this phone off third party.

I get 3 days no email setup on the phone I log in for my mails and no Istand msg find it drains battery I use the phone a lot about 10 hours a day of browsing and apps no problem with my battery try removing all instant msg worked 4 me

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 July, 2012 21:24

Me too i have problem with battery draining too fast than what was expected. I even tried all of the recommendations just to save battery life but it seems it's not working.

Another issues are:
No message tone - even it was set up, sounds not on mute or silent
Auto brightness - too dull when in need
It's hard for S3 to wake up after long time of not using - I need to restart it every time so i can use it

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 July, 2012 22:32

The Samsung promodizer in a mall showed me to set NO BACKGROUND PROCESSES so the applications that you no longer use will be removed and will not consume battery. However, when i checked there are still apps running that need to remove or clear on the RAM. Also the feature: mLIMIT BACKGROUND PROCESSED - after being set to NO BACKGROUND PROCESSES returned to STANDARD LIMIT on its own. Has the S3 mind on its own? -- scc2586

I bought the S3 after having been an Iphone user since the beginning. I have had the phone for 2 weeks and find the battery life totally unacceptable. It reminds me of the early iphones only slightly worst. Also my my message notices are not popping up especially voice mail. I am returning to ATT if after trying these new settings the battery life doesnt improve

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 18 July, 2012 11:26

I've had my Samsung S3 for almost a month now and I don't even need it on power saver and my phone will last from 7am in the morning until about midnight when I go to bed... And that's with web browsing, texting and a 30 minute phonecall thrown in.

The issue probably stems from the fact that when you first charge the phone out of the box, it needs to stay on charge for hours to work properly.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 July, 2012 07:22

I'm very surprised at most of these comments. My S3 is charged overnight then it's used on average for a half hour phone call, 2 hours of browsing, is constantly syncing via 3G and I never have a problem with the battery going. I was browsing for about 6 hours constantly yesterday as I was checking the score while the test match was on (I was at work) and I still had battery when I got home! And I don't use any of the tips mentioned above.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 July, 2012 23:02

My battery lasts for about a day which caused me to think that I purchased a faulty unit. But I was just used to my iphone 4, which lasts alot longer.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 24 July, 2012 14:39

Mine easily lasts 2 days with a light to moderate use. At first I noticed about a 6% per hour drain, but after a few days (and full charge every night) I now find it it is half that and I can easliy go 2 days. I do have the power saving turned on, but i do not limit the CPU tand I have the brightness turned up to about 3/4. I use blue tooth in my car about 30-45 per day talking and I leave that and WiFi on all the time. I have GPS disabled and I manually synch for email and weather etc.
If you have poor cell strenght and or weak wifi it will waste battery constantly trying to connect.

My s3 does last one day easy. Owning it and using it without battery lasting concern. Certainly if youtube app is actively used long time I believe battery could not withstand all rest of the day.
If someone does charge 3 times a day I believe galaxy s3 is not in good technical condition.

I don’t know what everyone is talking about. I get about 18 hrs with 4:30 hrs of screen on time. I don’t follow any of these power saving suggestions at all. I use it for text messaging, browsing the internet, FB, twitter, etc. I also talk on the phone about 30 -60 mins. Don’t turn GPS off, have Bluetooth on. I get great battery life.

Im def not an iphone fan, but I also suffer from the low s lll battery life. I had let my phone drain and charged it for 24 hours before I began using it. It seems as though more international slll are defective than american ones. I have the international and my cousin has the US version which lasts all day with increased youtube usage. Mine is draining 2% as I write this...

I was pretty pissed after the first day of using my S3 but after that it has been a charm. I tried to use it as little I needed to just to find out if it dies in the middle of the night without even being used and it actually did not. I'm know on 9days and a few hours with still 20% of the battery without any charging and about 2hours of talk time plus 90 minutes of display time. Of course with extreme battery saving precautions but still it's an extremely good result from an excellent smartphone.

Switched from an iPhone 4 to the S3. Love the S3 but hate the battery life. Mine only lasts 8 hours on very light use. Ive pretty much turned off everything, wireless, bluetooth, all sync is off. Brightness is at the lowest. No widgets except for the clock. Ive only had it a week, but it's going back to the store. Bought an extra battery. same issues.

anonymous's avatar

I bought international version of GS3. The device is perfect regarding all aspects. Battery power remains about 1.5 day with moderate (6 two minutes calls, 4 missed calls, 3 hrs idle Wifi, 0.5 hours internet accessing and 0.5 hour just looking at the bright vivid display to see its beauty!) use. Everything went just good as it was expected. However latest update was big (~60 GB) but it did not change anything visible that much. I did not like the update as it changed the smoothness of moving objects.

I bought this phone 2 weeks ago, before this I used an Iphone 4s. This battery is amazing, my Iphone 4s wouldn't even last a day. I get 1 and 1/2 days out of this phone..with power saving mode on. I use everything and message all the time. I do however turn of wifi when not in use and don't really use Bluetooth. As others have posted I think it has a lot to do with the 3g signal strength.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 August, 2012 19:33

The manual says you need to drain it under 10% and recharge it fully to get the best results.
I love the SGS3 and am doing the same trick as I did with the SGS 1 (after I cursed my Iphone 3G). I get online and find a shop that sells original chargers and batteries. 3 Days ago I received an extra battery and batterycharger so I'll always have a full battery to put in my phne. I simply charge the battery and change it when the other is drained. Takes about 20 seconds. Eat that Iphones!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 August, 2012 03:25

I wish there was an app available that would make 3G/data turn off when the screen times out, like wifi turns off when the screen times out. If there is one, please let me know.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 August, 2012 21:31

Ive use it 8 hours and its still at 65%. When you use it and you are done press the POWER button to shut down the screen. You will be surprised and many percent you save in a day!!! Might give you an extra 2 hours! Charge it all night also. For a reason it takes 2-3 hours to go down to 75% but i can last few hours with just 10%!!! Try to optimize, remove WIFI when not needed and weel good luck! poor signal might be the drain problem... overall i can use it 7 to 10-11 hours max depending on my usage/intensity.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 August, 2012 07:53

On the first power up, you're supposed to drain the battery to around 10% or just under.... Then when you charge for the first time, let it "cook" for at least 12 hours.... That may be withdrawal for some, but well worth it in the end...

Also, I heard that you should let the battery completely drain at least 3 times before charging. Apparently, it's good for the battery and it worked like a charm for my IPhone 3GS in the past with all but bluetooth running.

Remember.... Kill the battery on first power up and charge the battery for at least 12 hours for the first charge.

I dont understand what everyone is complaining about - my battery life is outstanding. I use my phone a lot - an hour a day either on FM radio or music player travelling to work - numerous phone calls and texts daily - email checking - sky news - checking new apps on play store - internet browsing and generally playing around with it and checking out all the features......I charge mine TWICE a week (wed and sat). I didnt do all the fancy charging things that you talk about....I just charged it and used it. I honestly dont know what all your problems are....Im just letting you know what My S3 is like...AMAZING...I cannot complain at all.

H066, there's no point saying "I don't know what everyone's going on about" as if people are making up. Our phones are clearly not working as well as yours. I charged mine overnight. Woke up and unplugged it in the final part of my sleep. Woke up again 2 hours later without using it and it's on 86%. It's now on 83 from reading this page and typing this.

The app called Jouice Defender will help all with a smartphone
In basic setting will it disable wifi and mobile dato when screen is off and only wake up every 15 minutes to listen data, mail, messages. This will give you around 1,5 more battery time!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 September, 2012 12:16

I had problem with huge power consumption in standby mode- 10% battery per 1hr with all option off !!! Mobile 2 weeks old. I tried different battery management software, all option off, I did uninstall most of the software - without any results until today.
YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD SAMSUNG KIES SOFTWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER AND CONNECT YOUR GALAXY S3 TO DO AUTOMATIC FIRMWARE UPDATE. - not software or system update! Thats problem with firmware only

Now power consumption is 10% per 4hrs with most of the option ON !!!!!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 September, 2012 16:33

1. Set wallpapers on lock and home screens to a non-animated one or a solid colour. E.g. black.
2. Turn off GPS, WiFi, Sync and Bluetooth unless necessary.
3. Stay in GSM only mode with data on. WCDMA only when necessary.
4. Turn off all window and app animations.
5. Turn off WiFi when in sleep mode unless plugged-in.
6. Turn off WiFi network scan notification.
7. Turn off all app notifications. Set refresh rates to never or manual.
8. Set backlight to remain on only for 30-seconds.
9. Set backlight for menu and back soft buttons to 1.5-seconds.
10. Set screen mode to standard.
11. Turn off all LED indicators.
12. Turn on power saving mode.
13. Turn off all unnecessary sounds (key-presses and etc), touch sounds and haptic/vibration feedback.

After a whole day's use (0600hrs to 1900hrs); probably 30-minutes of calls and a whole lot of texting via WhatsApp and SMS, 68% juice left.

I am a developer for this phone and I have four of them now that I use to test with. So if you really wanna know what to do, read this.

It's a very high-tech smartphone. It has a CPU bigger than most netbooks and has double the ram of most netbooks (the Verizon SGS3 has 2GBs. Some other versions have different CPU/RAM properties).

The battery in this phone is less than a tenth of the size of a netbook's battery also. Compared to the amount of time a netbook would last with only 10% battery, this phone is pretty good. And on top of it all, this fits in my pocket.

1. If you didnt charge your battery for 24 hours before hand, and your getting crrappy life, then buy an EXACT replacement (not aftermarket) and do the overnight charge. They are a $14 on Amazon right now without shipping, but are usually around $20-$25 shipped. That's cheap compared to most other phones that I had to buy batteries for.

2. Leaving your phone plugged in all the time really screws up your battery life. Plug it in at night (whatever battery level it's at) and when you wake up in the morning, unplug it. If your charging during the day, then unplug it once it notifies you that it's charged.

3. Buying an extra battery (exact replacement) to switch out every-other-day or every-two-days will also take a lot of stress off your batteries and help them last longer.

4. Your Service Provider (i.e. Verizon, Sprint, etc) has all kinds of installed bloatware crap that will constantly run on your phone. These are System Apps and can really only be removed if you ROOT your device. Then you can remove these apps or "freeze" them (Google "freezing android apps" for a definition).

5. Know how to use your device to the fullest. You will then know what to look for when browsing Google Play and you will know what does/doesn't drain your battery. I like to call these "Droid-Tells".

If you need any more info, toss me an email:

h3llsdr0id@gmail.com

Or look me up on any of the developer forums under:

h311sdr0id or h3llsdr0id

Out of all of these, having your phone/laptop/etc plugged in 24-7 is a MAJOR battery killer. I promise.

Thanks

h311sdr0id

I'm amazed that people are complaining about only getting 8-15 or so hours out of their S3 battery. I got mine last week and I'm lucky if the battery lasts more than 3 hours if i actually use the phone.

I charge it fully and after 5 hours without any use whatsoever less than it can get as lowq as 40% of the battery power remaining - and this is after following all the advice offered online, switching on all the power saving options, lowering the brightness of the screenetc etc.... the only thing that really seems to relieve the battery is not to use the wi-fi connection.

So get the S3 for having a massive screen that makes it difficult to hold in one hand but don't expect to be able to use any of its features without charging 2 or 3 times a day.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 12 November, 2012 15:01

You guys, what are you talking about? My S3 Battery life is absolutely amazing, mine was at 90% and after i slept for 9 hours i woke up and it was 88. I followed a few tips and they worked, i totally admire my s3 right now. Here are the tips :
1) Set the screen mode to Movie
2) Go to Settings>WiFi>Advanced and make the Keep wifi on during sleep never, u have to turn it on tho if u wanna use the internet.
4) Go to Setting>Data Usage> Touch the S3's left soft key and make it (Restricted BackGround Access)
Needless to say ofc, GPS off, Sync off, bluetooth off and for browsing use the default browser, it has a power saving mode at 3 levels, low average and high.
I tried all those tips today and they worked, Im so happy.
Btw, i heard some people complaining about home screen lagg and that the icons don't load at once once i get off an app and click home button, it really bothered me and i was kinda getting hopeless then i thought i ought to restart it and it was gone, i was ecstatic then. I tried to figure out what caused it and i found out it was something in the settings, most likely (Developer Options) No homescreen lag even with powersaving mode. Its a quadcore handset guys Haha. I was stupid to think its something faulty in the processor

I live in Ontario, Canada so I'm not sure if the US versions or international versions are different but Just bought myself the s3 and I want to talk about battery life on this.
So for the very first time, I let the battery drain itself, then plugged it in and let it come to a full charge (100%) The salesperson said that even if you charge to 100% and you keep the charger in it won't "over charge it or do anything for it" so I unplugged it and started using it right away. I notice the earlier posts said to keep it charged for 24 hours? (which i clearly didn't do- took like 2 hours to get to 100% after i bought it)
My plan was to keep using it and let it go down below 10% a couple times and keep charging it and see if it lasts long...
has anyone done this yet or does it even matter?

Mine had great battery life when I first had it but it got to the point where it would only last about 7 hours. I did a factory reset and it appears to have solved the problem (although I only did it yesterday afternoon so it's too soon to be sure).
If you have a Google account and you set the phone to back up everything automatically, all of your apps, contacts, calenders and Wifi passwords will be restored when you log in again.

My S3's battery life has been a major disappointment, it lasts less than one day from a full charge this includes minimal use in the day. I have set all power saving features enabled, GPS off, Bluetooth Off, Sync Off. To my surprise my colleague with his S3 on a separate network had no power saving features on and all devices active GPS/Bluetooth/Wifi etc, his battery life was fine.
This is irritating, I suspect that my providers network was something to do with it, because I have poor signal in work and at home, so the device seems to flicking between barely 3G and high to low 2G.
I have just set the S3 to GSM only in the Settings, and I have already noticed a marked improvement. I may get 2 days worth of use from one charge!
Worth a thought, it might not work for you but for me I think this is key.

Turn off GPS, turn off bluetooth, turn off sync, check your Gmail randomly. The yahoo mail app does not use sync. Use Wifi when at home and turn off when you leave

My Samsung Galaxy Slll is a piece of junk. I have had it for just over a month and wish I had stuck with an iphone. I had an iphone 4 for two years before getting the galaxy and just wanted to get something different. That was obviously a big mistake. Battery life is pathetic and the phones reception is hopeless. I have tried the power saving options and it hasnt done anything to help the battery life.
I gave my old iphone to my daughter who played games and sent texts almost constantly throughout the day. She still had 64% battery life remaining last night, while my galaxy went completely flat and turned off after having only sent 6 text messages and receiving 2 phone calls throughout the day
that were less than 1 minute long. Now I understand why there are so many iphone fans. I should have stuck with what
i had. I wont make that mistake again.

To FIX update to the latest firmware. I did this in keys now much better. Apparently there was a fault with original software sucking life when on standby. Might not work for everyone bit did for me

THE LONGEST TIME I AM ON FB IS ANYWHERE from 1to 2 hours. I also have held several conversations from a half hour to 1& 1half hour. this is starting out with a battery life if 100% then by 11:30 /12:00 am I recharge it. my problem is niy kniwing hiw often I should shut my phone down.

Samsung Galaxy S3 batterry life is absolutely rubbish. Anyone that says they get more than 10hrs, using it moderately, is telling a porky pie (lie).

I downloaded the FREE "Easy Battery Saver" from the Apps Store and setting it at "Super Power Saving Mode" with applications configured...I can easily get 48 hrs with moderate use (3-5 hrs surfing, 10-20 SMS, and 10 minutes phone use per day)....before this app. I could hardly last a day.

The tips given are standard precautions to reduce battery drain. I too had problems, even after all obvious measures were taken, but quickly discovered that the most likely culprit is the plethora of widgets with which android users populate their screens.
"beautiful widgets", "HD widgets" and a few others are power vampires. Delete all widgets and run your phone for a day. You'll be pleasantly surprised. I've managed to find a set of widgets that are quite frugal. Use "Battery Drain Analyser" to monitor usage. I get about 26 hours with moderate use, and over 40 hours with light use.
Good luck.

Hi Everyone! Just got a Galaxy S3 to replace my Skyrocket 4G LTEII that just broke. I'm a huge fan of battery life- Half you people that are complaining about battery life didn't run the battery through 2-3 FULL cycles Here's how to do a full cycle:

1. Charge up battery to 100% out of package
2. Use battery till the PHONE DIES
3. Charge battery with OEM Charger while PHONE is OFF to 100%
4. Unplug from Charger and wait Ten Minutes
5. Plug back into charger to Top off the battery
6. CONGRATULATIONS you have completed a cycle!
Searching online I found the most wicked battery. Search ZeroLemon Galaxy S3 battery- 7000mah.
Starting my second cycle today-so far with Wifi On, 50% screen brightness, using text, internet and occasional call-4% in 2 hours-hellz yeah! Just trying to help!
