Like a relentless technological bulldozer, Android continues to steamroll all before it. Google's mobile operating system has undergone some radical changes during its relatively short lifespan, and the most recent iteration, 4.0 for those of you that like numbers, Ice Cream Sandwich for those who prefer daft codenames, is the most polished yet.
The problem is, this latest flavour of Android is currently exclusive to Google's Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S phones. Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S2 will get Ice Cream Sandwich starting from next week, although it is down to the phone networks to decide exactly when that will happen. For those of you who simply cannot wait, salvation is at hand.
This handy guide will show you how to install Ice Cream Sandwich on your beloved blower, allowing you to reap the benefits of enhanced speed and functionality, before it is made available through the auto-update section on your phone.
Firmware caution
As is always the case when flashing firmware and mucking around with your phone's operating system, it's best to exercise some caution, lest your expensive mobile becomes an equally expensive -- but rather less functional -- brick. Our strong advice is to wait until the update is made available through your mobile phone operator officially.
Installing this update will invalidate your manufacturer warranty, and CNET UK, its employees, their immediate families and even their pets take absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for any damage you may inflict on your phone as a result of following this guide.
Assuming you still have the stomach for the job, let's get cracking.
Step 1: Grab the relevant files
Before you do anything, make sure you've downloaded and installed the official Kies application from Samsung's site. This contains all of the relevant USB drivers that allow your Galaxy S2 to communicate properly with your computer. You'll also need Odin, which is the sneaky piece of software that allows you to flash the firmware to your phone. Point your browser here to obtain that.

Another vital thing to remember is that you'll need to enable USB debugging from within your phone's settings. Go to Settings > Applications > Development, and tick the box that says 'Enable USB Debugging'.
Now for the important bit -- the ICS firmware itself. This particular file is based on Android 4.0.3, which is the very latest version. The file might take a while to download as it's over 300MB of data. Once it's done, extract the ZIP file on your computer.
Step 2: Configure Odin
Open up the Odin app that you downloaded previously. A big screen with lots of scary options should appear, but mop those beads of sweat from your brow and take some deep breaths -- we're here to help you through this, soldier.
First up, click the button that says PDA. Find the ICS firmware that you extracted and locate the file that ends in .md5. Select it and Odin will prep it for installation.
Step 3: Put your Galaxy S2 into download mode
Make sure your Galaxy S2 is completely switched off, and then press the power, volume down and home buttons simultaneously. You'll see a dire warning displayed on the screen about voiding your warranty -- essentially the final warning before you proceed -- but simply press the volume up button to skip it (assuming you still have the courage, that is).
Take your trusty USB cable and connect your phone to your PC. Odin should detect and recognise the handset, and you'll see a filled-in yellow box where it says COM. If nothing happens, it's probably because you didn't listen to us at the beginning and failed to install Kies. Doh.
Step 4: Flash the ICS firmware
Once all the stars are aligned and you've finished sacrificing your livestock to appease the Korean deity Samsung, you can tap the button that says 'Start'.
If the gods favour you, Odin will flash the Android 4.0.3 firmware to your Galaxy S2.
So there you have it. Ice Cream Sandwich on your Galaxy S2. To be honest, it doesn't look massively different from 2.3 on the Galaxy S2, as Samsung has covered the OS with its usual TouchWiz UI.
But you'll find a raft of improvements as well as cool things like a fully functioning data monitor and a new multi-tasking menu.
It's a taste of the future, today.

Will this work on the Galaxy Note?
anonymous 26 January, 2012 18:17
cant take a risk...anyone having the guts to do it??
anonymous 26 January, 2012 18:34
This is a ics firmwarefor the sgs2 thats in active development and will have plenty of bugs in , and might change radically from the end product, be aware of that if you download it, forums suggest that this is relatively stable though but there is already an updated version available from samfirmware
anonymous 26 January, 2012 19:23
will this work on the galaxy s2 t989 or is this only for the i900 (international version)?
Steve Carr 26 January, 2012 19:33
LP2 is not quite the latest available. I updated my S2 to LP6 yesterday, and it seems very fast and quite stable. It is certainly much more stable than the previous ICS build I used. It pays to keep an eye out on various forums to keep track of what is a very fast moving target!
anonymous 26 January, 2012 21:53
Can confirm this works OK, a bit of work to get the market working with two accounts but this seems to have settled down now. Also the occasional restart is needed. Fantastic to be on 4.0.3 though, some nice UI features and nice and fast.
anonymous 27 January, 2012 02:26
I've heard some people are having trouble connecting to wifi, as well as a few other problems. Is there any way to revert back if I encounter these problems?
anonymous 27 January, 2012 13:01
I did it and it works perfectly! Two problems however, android market is blocked and Kies on PC also doesn't link to the phone. Other than that no major problems? anyone know when the Official ICS gets released?
anonymous 27 January, 2012 19:05
Will this work on a three branded GS2
anonymous 27 January, 2012 19:57
It's also worth checking out the CM9 rom being developed by Codeworkx for the SGS II; although also in Alpha testing, many are reporting this is a more reliable build. Another fast-moving target, not fully-functional yet, probably 1-2 months away from release candidate; but already smooth and slick, it's a tantilising taste of Android 4.0
anonymous 27 January, 2012 20:08
Help!!! Odin gets stuck at data.img!! to scared to pull it out :(
what should i do!
mauro 27 January, 2012 21:41
I had the guts, and I've upgraded, and it works just fine. Now Im in 4.0.3......
the Galaxy S2 is the one sold in Mexico..
anonymous 27 January, 2012 22:53
@anonymous um...get a new phone,Lol ! Just kidding be patient it will load,if it doesn't just unplug in install old firmware, just google it .
anonymous 28 January, 2012 02:26
Everything is working nicely for me except Browser sync. I was really looking forward to seeing my Chrome desktop bookmarks synced with my SGS2 but I guess I'll have to wait...
anonymous 28 January, 2012 11:48
If you use Microsoft exchange server email for work DO NOT INSTALL! (It crashes a lot)
If you do not care about Microsoft exchange server, then this build is stable and will work for you.
Personally, I switched back to 2.3 and will wait for the official Ice Cream Sandwich release.
anonymous 28 January, 2012 14:25
How to unroot it ?
pls tell me
Noorur Choudhury 28 January, 2012 16:25
ok, they missed out the bit about the PIT, where u require a file called u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit
Noorur Choudhury 28 January, 2012 20:09
Please ignore my post above, it works fine without it.
Cnet have done a very good job on explaining how to install this official ICS rom. and I installed it fully, but it's not as smooth as I'd like it to be, so I'm going to revert back to the previous one and will wait it out til the official one comes out.
anonymous 29 January, 2012 18:50
i tried to download the ics firmware2 times and it didnt work
anonymous 29 January, 2012 20:17
Just finish downloading to the phone the Lp2 flash. It did bot to the welcome screen, so I'm happy. Odin will say PASS! when finished.
anonymous 29 January, 2012 21:35
I ve taken da risk now don knw wazz gonna happen
anonymous 30 January, 2012 02:05
I can comfirm this works! It is running on my Galaxy S2 UK unlocked phone, installed using Windows Ultimate 64-bit with Kies installed (had to play about a bit with the drivers to get Odin to see it properly though). I will try to update my Galaxy Tab 10.1 shortly with the same firmware.
anonymous 30 January, 2012 11:18
Quick question - does the installation wipe all the data from your phone and require you to set it up as new?
Mark Peterson 30 January, 2012 13:40
No Calendar application and no google calendar sync. Has anybody noticed that? Few applications which are downloaded from market do not even start up,
anonymous 30 January, 2012 17:08
Probably worth while adding a warning to backup your apps using something like Astro before starting, as all downloaded apps will disappear.
Apart from that a good, quick tutorial, thanks
anonymous 30 January, 2012 17:42
music player crashes ALOT. How do i downgrade to 2.3.4 again?
anonymous 30 January, 2012 21:45
install went fine but drains my battery much faster than gingerbread. going to have to switch back or find a better build...
anonymous 31 January, 2012 08:07

anonymous 31 January, 2012 11:00

anonymous 31 January, 2012 12:52
froze on image installation section, but after some heartache with the recovery mode, i got it installed. looks good, but very buggy and a little jerky. currently home button doesnt work, or screen lock......and its just turned itself off....cant wait the newest build
anonymous 31 January, 2012 16:01
There is a newer version - ending XX - which seems a little better.
HermanR 31 January, 2012 16:04
Hi all,
I've downloaded and installed this these instructions are very good and ICS feels much smoother, although I went to the LP6 version - the GPS doesn't work. Is there anyway that I can downgrade to my original ROM? But the ROM is good in all other ways. Thank you in advance.
anonymous 31 January, 2012 17:31
Has anybody installed the newest version? Is it much of an improvement? Any problems to note of?
anonymous 31 January, 2012 17:46
HermanR -
All you must do is find your original stock rom and flash it just as you flashed ICS
anonymous 31 January, 2012 23:44
how do i get the final finished version once its released? or how I go back to original version from this, please help thank you.
anonymous 1 February, 2012 15:08
Hi, I have flashed the latest one and the one before which is available through this website. I like it but I would like to go back to a more stable gingerbread I'm in the UK and on Three. I have downloaded I9100XWKI8_I9100H3GKI2_H3G from samfirmware.com which I think is correct. The problem I am having is when I unzipped the file it doesn't have the MODEM file or CSC files. Does anybody know where I can get those file from or can I use the ones from the ICS download (I doubt it) Please help me someone :-D
anonymous 1 February, 2012 20:43
Hello people, I have tried it on my Galaxy S2 on the 31st of January and I am very disappointed. Batterylife is reduced to 4/5 hours, menus lag most of the times. Not every app is compatible on ICS such as YouTube's app. it just WONT work on ICS for now until later updated.
I would wait for a more stable version, or a hacked rom from XDA. Just my 2 cents, perhaps somebody else got it to work without lagging, but right now I'm going back to VillainRom - The best rom for SGS2 in my opinion.
Again, these are my personal findings, feel free to criticize in a normal manner. :)
anonymous 3 February, 2012 02:43
Does it work on the samsung S2 g version? Can someone tell me please?? !
anonymous 3 February, 2012 20:53
Just a word to the wise.
These roms are NOT meant for UK release at the moment. This means that although they work fine on uk phones, you may encounter problems with the market.
Some apps available in he UK, like the Natwest banking app, disappear from the marketplace.
Not in all cases, but in mine. This is why using custom roms not specifically built for UK S2's can cause issues.
So as a heads up, if you find apps not appearing in the marketplace, or googles online web version of the market says the app is incompatible with your phone...theres why.
anonymous 7 February, 2012 10:23
Excellent - the easiest to follow instructions around
anonymous 9 February, 2012 08:44
Everything works fine. I could connect to exchange server too to read emails and sync calendar & contacts.
Only one issue. The bellow message pops up after booting:
"Unfortunately the process com.android.phone stopped."
Simon Cave 10 February, 2012 08:32
Iv down loaded the newest version (XXLPB) of ICS and apart from having to re-enter your 3G settings (sent to me by T-mobile so was easy) it seems very stable and with titanium back up everything is a breeze :)

Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note to get ICS in March 1
http://myproffs.co.uk/index.php/home/1647-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-and-galaxy-note-to-get-ics-in-march-1
anonymous 11 February, 2012 17:45
To the guy who asked about reverting back to Three UK ROM,
You don't need the CSC or Modem files to revert back to Gingerbread. You just flash the PDA file.
Have you thought about going back to the Open Europe ROM? keep the Three Firmware on file in case you ever need a warranty repair. I would recommend you download the Open Europe 2.3.6 firmware. It takes away all the apps that 3 install (such as the Sims and Monopoly) as well as will enable you to get the official ICS update quicker when it finally does come out.
anonymous 14 February, 2012 15:57
Thanks to the guy above me, your advice helped so much. I live in SA so I've reverted back to the original ROM cause i need the stability.
BTW I just want to say that this is probably the best and most easy instructions on the Web.
Thank you to every person's contribution.

Do i need to Root my phone first? Im kinda confused as i just got a new Galaxy S2 and it does not mention anywhere on this site that i have to root and on other sites it does state that i have to root
anonymous 22 February, 2012 21:39
Just did this with LPH and Odin 1.85 on a 3mobile S2, works like a charm. Tapped straight onto the 3G network, is restoring the account now. Beans...
anonymous 24 February, 2012 13:06
Now use this guide: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/root-xxlpb-on-galaxy-s2-i9100-using-cf-root-kernel/ To move to CyanogenMod9... Even cooler.
Chris Ayers 2 March, 2012 21:51
installed on my Thr33 Galaxy S2 UK. Worked like a charm. Had my doubts at first, didnt want to mess up my phone but took the plunge and it works fine.
anonymous 3 March, 2012 23:12
I upgraded but I think gingerbread is much better than this stucks alot sometimes applications stop unexpectedly.
anonymous 6 March, 2012 02:55
Thankss dude Its work properly......
anonymous 7 March, 2012 08:35
Ran it, nice, love task manager, and much better functionality.
Problems so far are wifi instability and settings crashes when attempting to sort, icons in dock not ICS style, homescreen wallpaper scrolls in a jerky manner, and a few reboots needed.
Obviously not polished but worth a look, you can still flash stock firmware and take official update when it arrives.
anonymous 13 March, 2012 13:26
DO NOT DO THIS. Their are bugs in this unofficial update eg, GPS dosen't work and WiFi is very dodgy. Plus Kies wont allow you to update your phone after you have done this. Also the set auto update icon stays in the notification bar, you cant get rid of it. I
I followed these steps, installed the update and regretted it. wait for the official one, its only a phone, i am sure you can wait.
anonymous 13 March, 2012 13:32
All done as above. Seems very fast. Any idea how to root?
anonymous 13 March, 2012 14:51
Works a charm. Device no longer rooted which I'm not sure if it should be or not??!
Seems to handle my exchange account fine and is running smoothly so far.
anonymous 13 March, 2012 16:25
As Easy as to press the update button on my iPhone

anonymous 14 March, 2012 11:46
Just tried this last night on my Samsung Galaxy S2(GT-19100). In less then 10 minutes it was done and everything works perfect.
anonymous 14 March, 2012 17:07
Works great.. However it seems to be missing a feature to train it to recognise your face better for face unlock. According to other posts for the Nexus it is in Settings > Security but not for this firmware
anonymous 14 March, 2012 17:28
Will it erase my applications' data or any of my personal data ???
please answer in time as fast as possible, Thanks and appreciate your hardwork :)
anonymous 14 March, 2012 18:15
Face recog....Security/screen lock/FACE UNLOCK...
anonymous 14 March, 2012 19:16
works perfect was up and running in 20 mins
anonymous 14 March, 2012 19:38
This ROM is very buggy XXLPQ....
Frequent Restarts and app crashes.
lags more than gingerbread
volume and vibration issues
very bad rom
anonymous 14 March, 2012 20:43
The rom works great apart from the 3g not working. I am in New Zealand.
anonymous 14 March, 2012 20:53
My friend upgraded successfully last night but asked me to point out that Odin does *not* like SD cards to be inside during the process. Remove the MicroSD card before commencing
anonymous 15 March, 2012 03:00
I unlocked my sg2 from a local shop which was locked with orange will i be able to update it offically ?
anonymous 15 March, 2012 04:48
HI EVERYONE,I DID IT.BUT IT IS NOT OFFICIAL ICS FROM SAMSUNG,IT IS QUITE OK.BUT IF U ASK ME I ADVICE U WAIT FOR THE OFFICIAL VERSION.IT IS HAVING SOME PROBLEMS LIKE FREEZING.WAIT FOR 19 0F MARCH,THAT IS THE BEST SOLUTION....
anonymous 15 March, 2012 08:13
In the past, conventional wisdom was to uninstall Kies before using Odin3 (Odin and Kies didn't "play nice", according to the xda Gurus. May be worth a look if the above bricks your phone.
anonymous 15 March, 2012 10:06
I tried it and works like a charm, just fallow the steps, and make sure you got the right files etc. from their links. And then just do as the video shows. toke me about 4minutes to update the phone with the Odin, and after that it reboots it's self and starts up so enter you unlock pins and what else security feature. Wait for it to load in properly. Everything seams to work fine, and some apps you might have to delete and reinstall. I also got scared first the camera didn't work, but it did after it scanned through my SD card properly, which is not a notice you see any more apparently like with the old Ginger Bread 2.3 version. Thanks for a great guide!
Note! I used and played around with the phone for about ~5hours now and i am way happier with the phone now than i was before, and it is a pleasure to use =)
anonymous 15 March, 2012 13:01
Just upgraded mine and works fine so far. everything seems to work perfect touch wood :)

anonymous 17 March, 2012 21:00
I've flashed quite a few Droid phones, and this has been the easiest by far. Thanks for the walk-through.
Long live Droid !
anonymous 18 March, 2012 02:01
i upgraded to xxlpq and it seems fine - from the firmware revision number in kies it looks like this rom has come from poland therefore if you want the ability to do future updates through kies you will need to set your csc to xoa (at least i think thats how it works). i'm on xeu and i cant be bothered changing it cos it forces a factory reset - someone want to try it and confirm? also 'rom manager' in the apps store is really useful for backing-up your existing rom before doing these sorts of things.
anonymous 18 March, 2012 03:39
I'm in UK using vodaphone, update worked first time, network and apps all updated and work fine so far and my WIFI connected 1st time without me needing to update anything - great work on a a simple and fast guide.
1000115871 18 March, 2012 03:48
I tried ICS, but found it quite buggy with two different ROMs. E-mail application was crashing constantly, couldn't add shortcuts (only widgets) and it was a pretty unstable experience throughout. I'll try again in a month or so - the bits that did work had potential. Back with 3.6.4 now... some Italian version that was the latest I could find. :)
anonymous 18 March, 2012 10:11
confirmed that the xxlpq official 4.0.3 firmware is from poland and the region is XEO.
peterty 18 March, 2012 17:21
I followed the instructions in the video and the upgrade went smoothly; everything in ICS worked OK, but it was very flaky and unstable, kept crashing and restarting evry few minutes. I tried reflashing it but with no improvement. I eventually worked out that it was some of the apps I had installed on the SD card (moved there using Gemini App Manager) which were causing the problem, so I removed the SD, reformatted it (on the PC - after backing up all the contents) and reinserted it in the S2. rebooted and voila! ICS is now behaving perfectly. I've now reinstalled (onto the phone) some of the apps that were on the SD (but not all of them - I took the opportunity to weed out the less-used ones!).
So I would reiterate the advice above about removing your SD card before upgrading, Odin doesn't seem to like it if the SD is present during the process.
Also, with regards to the comments about Odin not liking Kies: in my experience, you don't have to uninstall Kies completely before running Odin, it just doesn't like ANY elements of Kies running at the same time - so make sure that you've shut down not just the main Kies program but also the updater, task bar tray app, etc which tend to carry on running in the background (check in Task Manager for any processes with 'Kies' as part of the name). Odin should then behave correctly.
anonymous 18 March, 2012 17:52
Thanks for this article.. It works for me in my Samsung Galaxy S2
anonymous 18 March, 2012 22:24
Thank you very much worked perfectly for me up to now... From Sri Lanka with a phone bought from UK update to Poland version. GREAT>>>

anonymous 19 March, 2012 08:55

anonymous 19 March, 2012 09:27
I, had the same problem today while installing new android OS. All went ok and then the, after boot, stuck on "Installing Applications".
I've search the internet and nothing could be found. After some trying I solve it, for me it was a matter of disk space. I had space on disk to install the new OS but not to install the applications by default afterwards.
Uninstalling something did the trick to me. Try it.
Hope it helps.
anonymous 19 March, 2012 09:48
THANK YOU!!!! All perfect. It even removed the annoying ORANGE startup screen
anonymous 19 March, 2012 09:57

hi . its work on my s2. every things was fine but the internet browser not working.
what to do ?? do i have to change some setting ?
gooday.
anonymous 21 March, 2012 11:27
just installed it through your walk through works a treat cheers
anonymous 21 March, 2012 15:35
you should have warned us that kies needs to be closed while flashing the freaking thing..almost had a heart attack when it said failed..
anonymous 21 March, 2012 21:52
I would back up your phone contents, remove any SD cards and take the back off your phone (in case you need to pull the battery at any stage). Reset your phone and refresh it factory standard. Then apply the update, then you just have the standard apps & settings to work from. Then upgrade it your phone although I might just wait until the O2 update comes along.
anonymous 22 March, 2012 04:10

anonymous 24 March, 2012 07:16
Hey, i was wondering that if i do this, will i be able to get the old OS back, so i can upgrade it legit when the proper version comes out?
anonymous 24 March, 2012 13:18
very nice
shetalksandroid 24 March, 2012 14:45
I tried XXLPQ on my SGS2 and it has a lot of bugs. It's the same one available for download in this post. I don't suggest installing it AT ALL. I'm currently testing DXLP7 and it has less bugs. I'm gonna try other official releases too and see if I find a "perfect" one. You can keep close watch of my reviews here: http://shetalksandroid.blogspot.com/2012/03/reviews-xxlpq-dxlp7-uhlpe-zslpe-xwlp2.html ... I just don't want anyone to install bad ROMs like this one.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 17:07
did it but lags quite a bit. Messages, browser and facebook glitches more than often and requires a reboot.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 19:09
Hey is it works on i9100g model
anonymous 25 March, 2012 04:27
I just did the update via Kies and i am a bit partial about totally liking it. I luv the new pattern lock but the Phone icon which contains, in order: Keypad, Logs, Contacts and Favorites does not have the "Contacts" option anymore, i used to have just that icon on on my home page now i have to add another one for my contacts. The transition to different screens/page is much smoother and i like that Setting is now categorized. I am not liking that changing the font does not apply to all apps like it used to which is a major disappointment and i gotta sinc my contacts again. These are things i noticed so far. I just did the update about 15 mins ago. :)
anonymous 25 March, 2012 09:58
When the update is finished and then i slide it to unlock and then it say installing kies, etc and then installing application and then it hangs and i wait for a long time but its not opening! do you know how to fix this?
anonymous 25 March, 2012 15:24
I'm in the UK on Vodafone. I originally had my phone rooted, don't know if it helped at all, but so far the ROM is working great, there are a few differences between it and the stock, but it didn't take too long to do, was really easy, all my apps, contacts, messages and everything else went no where, the only thing it did reset was my homescreen. Only thing that did worry me was when it restarted it seemed like it got stuck on the media player upgrade, but after a few minuets it just carried on. So all in all, I'm pretty happy, if you've got bugs and stuff I think it just depends on your phone and where you are. Thanks whoever put this together. God bless.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 01:44
Joël comments:I'm a novice (rooted my phone a few months ago, and found that a terrifying experience) but this upgrade went incredibly smooth - thanks to the superb instructions on this page.
I find the phone to operate very smoothly. The only issues encountered were that my home screens were reset, and the update for Flash won't install from the Market. Also, it appears my phone is no longer rooted. Does anyone have any idea how I can re-root aan? I really need the root access un order to calibrate my battery.
All in all, thanks for a great, smooth and well explained process!
anonymous 26 March, 2012 03:24
Tbh, there wasn't a fair share of scaremongering going on in the how to video.
In my personal experience of owning a SGS1, the Samsung phones for their part are very, very difficult to brick and one should embrace flashing with open arms. I fail to see why the narrator would attempt to dissuade curios parties several times. Flashing via Odin is a lot easier than via recovery and that needs to be stated at some point.
Tbh, if you somehow manage to brick any of the Galaxy S range then fair play to you, you really went very very wrong at some stage.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 08:52
did the upgrade and its works fine
anonymous 26 March, 2012 09:30
my phone failed to update the ics software and now the phone can't switch on and just showing weird sign like a caution sign a pc a a phone..please help me..
Simon Williams 26 March, 2012 18:49
Unlucky those of you that have encountered problems (^^^^) but I followed the steps to the word and downloaded the "SGS2-ICS-[LP2_SER]" (its the russian one) from http://zonyx.minus.com/ and didn't hit any problems while following the instructions above.
As for wiping all the apps, I still have all of mine.
And immediately this is noticeably different from Gingerbread :D :D :D :D :D :D

anonymous 28 March, 2012 13:19
It worked great thanks CNET but how do I improve the battery life of my Samsung Galaxy s2 while using iCS 4.0.3?
anonymous 28 March, 2012 14:52
hi i forget check usb debug then this install failed .... pls tell me
anonymous 28 March, 2012 16:52
kies has different parts... what you want is to connect via USB... and check that is working first, some old USB drivers may be clashing, so unplug / remove them..
NOT wifi
NOT bluetooth
anonymous 29 March, 2012 01:05
Thanks CNET for publishing this good information on how to update to ICS. I did and really while updating, i was tensed that either it will work or not but i did and SUCCESSFULLY updated my Galaxy S2 GT-i9100. I read a lot of other articles but you are the best!!!!!
I followed what wrote here and finally i am on ICS!
anonymous 29 March, 2012 11:43
I just upgraded my UK Tmobile contract S2 following the above guide was very very simple and took literally 5 minutes all in. Sees to be working fine. Thank you CNET.
I have to say though, as I thought I don't know what all the fuss is about it is hardly any different to Gingerbread.
anonymous 29 March, 2012 13:29
For Indian Users owning GT-I9001 (sim free), change the CSC code to NPL and u'll get the update through Kies, updated my phone on 29th March 5:00 PM

I belong to INDIA, I have upgraded my S II to ICS 4.0.3, as per description given in this page, but some of the android application is not functioning on it, I would like to revert back to Gingerbread, factory setup, Kindly guide me.
John Gregory Hopkins Schell 1 April, 2012 09:49
Success. I carefully (nervously) followed the instructions to the letter. Total time was around 15 minutes. Very happy with results!
anonymous 1 April, 2012 12:16

anonymous 2 April, 2012 12:01
Mine has been stuck on the Galaxy SII splash screen for over 20 minutes now.
anonymous 2 April, 2012 13:41
I installed it. Perfect ! 10/10
anonymous 4 April, 2012 23:38
I installed this version on to my SGS2. It all worked great but I found that the mobile data network did not work on 3G or HSPA speeds. Data was sent but non was received. For the moment after 2 hours of trial and error with much grievance utilising Odin and seeking stock roms I have reverted back to Android 2.3.4. Guess I'm going to have to wait for the official Samsung release through Kies (joy)... 2017 i think.
anonymous 5 April, 2012 23:05
poo off
anonymous 6 April, 2012 13:24
This is Bullshit, do not try this unless you want your phone bricked. It almost happened to me.
anonymous 6 April, 2012 19:00
Installed ICS official firmware LLPQ 4.0.3 very stable and fast using above how-to

anonymous 9 April, 2012 21:59
Instead of saying PASS!, it said FAIL! on my sgs2, in the Odin program.. Don't know if it was the computer, the Odin program or my phone who failed, but nomatter what, i'll stick to the old OS now.. I'm scared of taking another risk..
anonymous 11 April, 2012 03:51
DIDI IT AND WORKS GREAT!
anonymous 12 April, 2012 09:29
Hi
I updated my phone last night. It is taking me a while to get used to but so far its working fine. Goodluck to everyone trying. It took me a while to connect through kies aswell lol Our phones dont make it easy to keep them up to date do they :-)
anonymous 13 April, 2012 07:23
Did it successfully. But, it keeps on crashing, there is no end to the crashing..... how to fix this crashing?
anonymous 13 April, 2012 10:26
will this work on galaxy s gt i9000, running on gingerbread 2.3.5 ta very much...
Richard Chaise 13 April, 2012 21:39
Followed this, it installed ok & I've been using it for a couple of days. Most of it works, but it's a bit clunky certain things fail to complete & crash, which didn't happen before, so on seeing there was a kies upgrade I've just connected to Kies & it tells me that it can not upgrade from this software, so what now guys?? I'm stuck with it as it is?? Ideal, that will teach me to be impatient!
andy p 18 April, 2012 14:05
@Richard Chaise, It is really easy. I was in the same position as you but went onto XDA Developers using the following link (I think you may need to be logged in to XDA, but it is free and relatively painless to join and the official ICS Rom for UK unbranded SIIs is on there. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
(unzip the file into a folder once downloaded)
You also need ODIN. Once ODIN is installed, run it and flash the ROM the same way you did with your previous ROM. Exact same process. You dont need to factory reset or anything.
Thanks
anonymous 19 April, 2012 09:48
Help! My partner downloaded it and now his computer won't start! Has anyone else had this problem?
anonymous 19 April, 2012 10:41
will this work on my samsung galaxy ace
anonymous 19 April, 2012 19:10
Brilliant - thank you :-)
Been having loads of problems with kies (it wont let me update via it anymore!) but this worked perfectly. Really easy to follow too.
Again, big thanks
anonymous 20 April, 2012 19:05
Awesome upgrade. Works perfectly. Followed the instructions to the law and you will be right :-) Took me 3 and a half minutes to upgrade with ODIN. Galaxy S2.
anonymous 20 April, 2012 19:11
I dont see any problems in future upgrades. As long as you have S2 . Droid won't let us down! No problems with flashing, smooth as. Thanks CNET.
anonymous 21 April, 2012 12:55
works great but can't find NFC can anyone help
kites4you 21 April, 2012 14:39
is there any way to get my galaxy s2 to samsung firmware so it can be recognised by Kies software on PC,????
please reply
anonymous 22 April, 2012 06:59
Remember that after flashing ICS - the updates to the normal apps will steady your phone just give it time to settle. Like anything, give it time to mature! My SG2 works really well after the standard apps are updated.
anonymous 22 April, 2012 10:18
Can i install this update to any other phone of samsung ?????? Plz need rply

New system is slow, screen flashes occasionally, freezes.
Dont install ice cream!
HELP!
How can go back to ginger version?
jacob@audio4maniacs.com
anonymous 1 May, 2012 10:03
I recommend you wait till ICS is available via kies updates. Gingerbread is great and tested. But I couldn't wait so I followed the instructions here and using ODIN I got through. I played and mucked around with different apps also downloaded ICS launchers from googleplay even enhanced the ICS. Right now I'm happy and would never go back to gingerbread. Sorry to hear those who hasn't had their phones sorted. My advice is to wait till the real thing is realeased vie kies. I have a SGS2 best phone on the planet!
anonymous 1 May, 2012 16:41
This is ICS from kies,
Runs slow, freeses, screen flashes occasionally.
This new software looks better than gingerbread but is more demanding.
It is like windows vista compared to xp.
Personally I prefer xp.
how can I go back to ginger bread?
anonymous 1 May, 2012 18:10
Please can someone advise? I've followed the steps and on Odin it tells me all steps are completed (succeed 0 / fail 0) and my screen still has the android logo and downloading underneath with do not turn off target!! ... do I have to just wait now until it powers up itself!!?
This isn't my phone ... wholly s**t!
nerrad69 2 May, 2012 20:05
Ics is quicker and improves battery life but now my pc wont recognise my galaxys2... Why dont developers check these things before they say software is ready..

anonymous 8 May, 2012 00:09
After 4 hours on 3 PCs trying to get Kies to do the update, I was annoyed enough to take the risk. This nicely written recipe worked perfectly for my Orange UK Galaxy SII
anonymous 8 May, 2012 07:00
how much time ics take to get update?......i m followng that odin process only.
anonymous 8 May, 2012 07:13
This is going over the top but it may help to reset your phone to factory settings, take your extra sd card out, ensure your kies has all the latest drivers, turn off kies, don't run any other programs or run any other devices, clean your registry files. My sg2 works amazingly well. If you aren't sure don't upgrade, wait till the proper upgrade thru kies.
anonymous 8 May, 2012 07:15
Update to ICS took me 3 minutes
anonymous 11 May, 2012 23:52
it does not work on (GT-I9100G) version which its most updated firmware is gingerbread 2.3.3
anonymous 12 May, 2012 13:47
I have followed the directions to the letter but it doesn't work. Says Succeed 0 / Failed 1.
My experience:
1. The G S2 did not show any warning message when I power on pressing the volume keys and power switch.
2. The download link gave me Odin 1.85 not 1.83.
After attaching and running everything, the message I got was:
Added!!
Enter CS for MD5..
Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
Please wait..
I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ_I9100XXLPQ_HOME.tar.md5 is valid.

Installed the officila update that reached my phone. After that my data connectivity is not working. The data connection is unstable. It says the connection lost for every second page.
Please suggest if there is a way out.
anonymous 24 May, 2012 21:08
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 that is on the Three network in the UK.
When I bought it, it was on 3.0.4 Gingerbread and I have successfully upgraded it to 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich using Kies 2.0 for Windows. The process is straightforward but took something like an hour to do.
My advice is back your phone up first and be sure you backup is good. Running the Kies updated the phone but the phone will periodically lose touch with your PC. Don't get impatient, let the update run and all should be ok.
anonymous 28 May, 2012 11:40
Hey Dude, I successfully installed the ICS after 2 months down I am having problems with this. It just Hangs up very often; it's slow now, feels like to kill the phone. Sometimes sound is not working. It has started giving up problems.
PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO GO BACK TO GINGER BREAD NOWWWWW!!!!!!THIS IS NOT HAPPENING JUST BY RESTORING FACTORY SETTINGS!!!!!
M SCREWED UP PLEASE HELP.......
anonymous 28 May, 2012 12:05
Installed it, took me about 5 minutes or less (didn't delete the data I have stored on my device) worked just fine but eventually I downgraded back to 2.3.6. this is the unofficial version therefore it's very laggy, WiFi is unstable, 90% of the apps don't support ICS yet and battery life is surprisingly shorter...
For those who are interested in downgrading back just do the exact same steps done here in this guide but with the 2.3.6 firmware file (won't delete anything from your phone).
anonymous 28 May, 2012 23:15
will this work for sgs2 i9100g models?
anonymous 8 June, 2012 17:01
what is your name
anonymous 13 June, 2012 01:14
That was easier than I expected! After a few connection problems ICS updated in no time, and all my apps and data are still there. Used BackupMaster and I'm hoping my S2 will be back to normal shortly but with what seems like a speedier OS.
anonymous 14 June, 2012 10:32
Thank you so much this took 1 attempt. Samsung Kies took about 50 attempts over 3 days.

Installed great on my korean model S2 bought in China. Much speedier liking the ICS alot better. Works well BUT my lock screen will not work now, will not lock/unlock anymore. tried it in swipe/pattern/password/etc but no joy. Also my GPS will not work now.
My mate got the same Koream model S2 flashed tonight in a chinese phone shop with a korean version of 4.0.3 and guess what no lock screen either?
Anyone had problems with the lock screen and how to fix. wish to keep 4.0.3 but need a locked screen for work.

pls help if anyone face this problem!!!.
anonymous 31 August, 2012 09:51
my god people are just going nuts about updating their phones. i simply did it from my phone it self. settings> about> software update> wifi only (high speed connection) > download the os> and i am on ICS 4.0.3.
IT couldnt get more official by upgrading your OS directly from your phone.

I am Abdo Howbani from Yemen, I have tried this on my Galaxy S2 but it did not work and the phone is stuck on the boot - I was unable to use the phone; after a hard day of fight I got to know that the firmware above does not work with all Galaxy S2 mobiles; it works with the model (GT-I9100) but it does not work with (GT-I9100G); mine was (GT-I9100G), I had to look for another firmware that is for (GT-I9100G); I downloaded
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/157116396/b73d71e/I9100GXXLPQ_I9100GODDLP7_INU.zip.html
and it was working fine.

Thank you very much for your post.
I successfully downgraded my GT-N7000 from Jelly Bean to ICS.
Jelly Bean has too many problems on my device.
Your post was so helpful to me, thanks.
