The N-Gage brand used to represent a bunch of gaming handsets that looked more like Game & Watch handhelds than phones, and were about as attractive to consumers as unanaesthetised dentistry. But after rethinking its gaming strategy, Nokia has relaunched N-Gage as a platform that runs on a variety of Nokia's smart phones. You no longer need a specific, ugly phone to play the games.
Mobile gaming used to be about directing a snake around a tiny screen but times have changed. N-Gage games range from 3D racing games to multi-player football titles, and you can download them over the air, straight to your phone.
It's not just the games that have improved; it's everything else too. N-Gage compatible phones are crammed with features that should get your juices flowing as much as the games do.
When it comes to playing games, some of the N-Gage handsets are better designed than others, so it's wise to get your hands on the phone you're interested in and test out its controls.
It's not all fun and games, you know -- remember that this is your primary phone, and you're going to use it to make calls and send text messages. If you don't particularly like the keypad for texting, pick a different phone.
A tip: keep an eye on battery life. If you're bashing away on the virtual pitch all day, you might find you'll need to lug around a charger to help you last the whole day.

We don't like how the N82 looks and we're not keen on its keypad, but it's such a good phone in terms of features that we're prepared to overlook its aesthetic shortcomings. This is how the N95 should've been -- from the camera to the GPS, everything works as you expect it to. Fingers crossed Nokia manages to squash all of this into a smaller, more attractive handset next time round Read more

The N95 almost justifies its hefty price-tag for the sat-nav alone. Despite a few bugs, Nokia's handset succeeds as phone, camera, media player, PDA and above all personal navigator. If we had to rescue just one device from a burning house, it would be the N95 Read more

Upgraded mobile phones are usually disappointing, but the Nokia N95 8GB is a truly superb successor. The larger screen, 8GB on-board memory and black casing are so seductive, we were sad to see it go back to Nokia, but it's still pricey and it's still chunky Read more
