After months of wild speculation, Apple has finally taken the covers off the iPhone 5. The early response from our readers is that Apple hasn't done enough to impress, but let's take a look at how it squares up to its competitors.
I've pitted it against Samsung's Galaxy S3 and Nokia's recently unveiled Lumia 920, both of which are arguably the flag bearers for their respective operating systems -- Google Android and Windows Phone 8.
We haven't given the iPhone or Lumia the full review treatment yet so there are still a lot of unknowns to consider. I'll be making my comparisons based on our hands-on preview time and known specifications. Keep this page bookmarked and come back later for a more comprehensive comparison when we have all the models in our grasp.
Design

At first glance, you might not notice much difference between the new iPhone and the previous model, but there have been quite a few tweaks. First of all it's taller, housing a 4-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The reason for this is it allows you to watch videos without annoying black bars down the sides. It also accommodates an extra row of app icons.
The latest iPhone is much more slender too, measuring a mere 7.6mm thick, which Apple claims is the thinnest in the world. It's ditched the glass back, replacing it with an all-metal chassis with a two-tone effect. Its dimensions may be different, but many of you have already commented that it's not much of a redesign and that this new phone should have provided a fresher look.
Apple's got rid of the 30-pin dock connector, replacing it with an 8-pin version. While that helps keep it extremely slim, it does mean iPhone docks and accessories you currently use won't be compatible any more without an adaptor. Not great news if you've just spent £6,000 on a dock. Sadly, what it hasn't brought is the option for expandable storage, so don't expect to buy the cheaper 16GB model and bump it up with a microSD card.
The Galaxy S3, meanwhile, is a considerably bigger beast. At 8.6mm thick, it's still supremely slim, although not quite matching the iPhone 5. It packs in a whopping 4.8-inch screen, so it's somewhat larger in your hand than the iPhone.
Samsung seems more keen on fresh designs though, as it threw out the textured black plastic and square design of the Galaxy S2 and replaced it with a rather sleek curved back with rounded edges. It's available in a whole host of colours, which should keep the fashion-conscious among you happy. It's arguably a little plasticky though, and doesn't quite have the premium, sturdy feel of the iPhone. At least the S3 does let you expand the storage with a microSD card.
Like the iPhone, the Lumia 920 hasn't seen much of an overhaul in design over its predecessor, the Lumia 900. The polycarbonate case, with its curved edges, is still in full effect and it's been given a curved glass screen, rather than the standard flat one on the 900.
Nokia reckons the materials are extremely hard-wearing and scratch-resistant too. We haven't been able to properly check this yet, but if it's anything like the Lumia 800 then it should be able to take a few knocks.
Screen

This is the first time Apple has increased the size of the iPhone's screen, from 3.5 inches to 4 inches. It's not a huge increase, sure, but it's better than nothing and means the phone remains more hand-friendly than the giants of the smart phone world.
The resolution has slightly increased too, with extra pixels shoved in on the long, vertical axis. The pin-sharp 326 dots per inch pixel density found on the iPhone 4S has been retained. It's deliciously clear and makes even the tiniest text look perfectly readable.
At 4.8 inches, the Galaxy S3's screen is, of course, much bigger, almost crossing the boundary into tablet territory. A bigger screen could be useful for watching movies as well as playing glossy 3D games. But it does mean it's more chunky to hold and carry around -- whether a bigger screen is a good thing or not is therefore totally dependent on your personal needs.
It offers a stonking 1,280x720-pixel resolution, but due to the sheer size of the display, that equates to a dpi of 306, which doesn't quite match the iPhone 5. Text still looks extremely sharp, so you shouldn't mark the S3 down too harshly for this.
The Lumia 920's 4.7-inch screen has a resolution that marginally surpasses the S3's which, on the smaller screen, results in a pixel density that's almost exactly the same as the iPhone. Expect icons to look super-crisp and tiny text on web pages to be crystal clear.
Nokia claims the display is extremely bold, with deep black levels. It certainly did a good job with the Lumia 800 screen, so my hopes are high for an impressive effort here, but I'll leave final judgement for the full review.
Power

The iPhone 5 marks the arrival of Apple's latest processor, known as the A6 chip. In true Apple fashion, details about it are extremely thin, so we're not sure at this point whether it's a dual or quad-core chip, or at what speed it's running.
Apple was happy to boast about the performance increase, claiming this new silicon offers double the performance in both processing and graphics over the 4S. Whether this is accurate or not remains to be seen, but its demo of Real Racing 3 certainly looked extremely smooth, so I'm looking forward to seeing what it can achieve.
The Galaxy S3, meanwhile, boasts a quad-core chip clocked at a nippy 1.4GHz. It's proven itself to be among the most powerful phones we've ever tested and makes using demanding apps and games a dream.
It's important to keep in mind that having more cores in a processor doesn't mean it will offer better performance. Most apps at the moment aren't able to take advantage of quad-core processing, leaving that powerful processor sucking away at your battery life for nothing. Apple has always been excellent at getting superb performance out of seemingly lesser hardware so it's important to wait and see how it copes.
The Lumia 920 is the first of Nokia's Lumia phones to offer a dual-core chip as its new Windows Phone 8 software now supports multi-core processing. It's clocked at 1.5GHz, which should help make swiping through the big colourful tiles of Windows Phone 8 particularly slick.
Software

One of the big features to be discussed alongside the iPhone 5 at its launch was iOS 6 -- the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system. The core interface hasn't changed a jot, so you'll still be looking at grids of icons arranged into folders. It's easy to argue that this look is getting pretty tired now and it's time for a refresh, but really, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Quite a selection of new features arrive with iOS 6. Notably, it no longer uses Google's mapping software, instead offering its own take on maps, which allows for turn-by-turn navigation and local business information. It also lets you make FaceTime calls over 3G, as well as offering deeper Facebook and Twitter integration, allowing you to Tweet from almost anywhere in the phone.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which at the time was the most recent version available to it. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has since taken over, so the S3 is no longer cutting-edge in the software stakes. Samsung has confirmed it will be updated to Jelly Bean in October though, so fingers crossed it will be fresh and new again before Christmas.
Ice Cream Sandwich is still great, and like all Android phones, it lets you plop live widgets down on your home screens, showing you live information without having to boot up an app. That's something Android owners regularly flaunt in front of iPhone fans, whose home screens don't offer this level of customisation.
The Lumia 920 is the first of Nokia's phones to feature the latest version of Microsoft's phone operating system, Windows Phone 8. It looks similar to Windows Phone 7 -- the colourful home screen tiles remain in place, although their sizing and placement is more flexible. Behind the scenes there's been a complete overhaul, therefore it won't be available as an update to existing Lumia owners, which caused something of an outcry.
One of the major updates for Windows Phone 8 is the support for more powerful hardware including multi-core processors and high-definition screens. Nokia has brought in a lot of its own software to the equation, particularly on the mapping front, allowing for offline and even indoor maps, as well as integration with Nokia's navigation service, Nokia Drive. We've not been able to spend time with Windows Phone 8 yet so we'll have to leave the verdict on this for a later date.
Camera

The iPhone 5's camera is an 8-megapixel affair, which is the same resolution offered on the 4S, but it uses apparently improved optics for clearer shots and better image processing for clearer low-light shots, with significantly reduced noise. It can automatically stitch photos together for an automatic panorama mode -- although this was already achievable using various apps.
The example shots shown off by Apple certainly looked impressive, but they will have naturally been taken under the best conditions to show off the camera's skills. It's important to see what it can do in normal, everyday situations before making a firm judgement. The camera on the 4S, however, is one of our favourite phone snappers, so as long as Apple hasn't made it any worse, it could well take the top spot.
The S3 packs an 8-megapixel snapper. It received some helpful tweaks on the software side since the S2, such as zero shutter lag, meaning the photo is taken the instant you press the button.
The Lumia 920, pictured above, sports the PureView moniker, which the more technically minded among you might recognise as the name given to the whopping 41-megapixel camera in Nokia's 808 phone. While the 920 has a more standard 8 megapixels, we're hoping takes superb quality snaps using the PureView technology.
We're already impressed with what the iPhone 4S achieves with its camera and the S3 performs similarly well. If the Lumia 920 takes advantage of its PureView tech, we may have a very interesting fight on our hands as to which takes the top camera spot.
4G networks

One of the key features of the iPhone 5 is that it will work on the recently unveiled 4G network for super-fast data downloads. The only network to provide this service is Everything Everywhere (Or EE as they're now known). If you've got an existing plan with anyone else, you won't be able to achive such impressive speeds.
The standard Galaxy S3 that you can buy now doesn't have 4G capabilities as standard, but a revised version with 4G inside will soon launch, ready for the new network.
The Lumia 920 will come as standard with 4G on board, so downloading should be nippy right out of the box. Of course, you'll have to switch over to Everything Everywhere first.
Outlook
At the moment, it's far too difficult -- and pointless -- to try and pick a winner from the three. All these phones offer multi-core processing, high-resolution screens, 8-megapixel cameras and 4G connectivity. The real differences are the software they run on and the user experience.
We'll come to a more definitive answer when we have all three in our hands, but for the moment, whichever one is best will largely boil down to which operating system you prefer -- iOS, Android or Windows Phone.

I mean I get that you have one of each OS, but why not throw in the HTC One X?, has very similar specifications to the Galaxy S3, so you should show how they differ
anonymous 13 September, 2012 17:34
Talk about biased. The Nokia Lumia 920 has clear leads in several areas that you choose to downplay. The fact that it has a better screen than the iPhone's vaunted Retina Display barely gets a mention. The camera, based purely on technical specs, is also not a competition. If anything, the Nokia's camera specs blow the other two out of the water. f2.0, OIS, etc. are all much better specs than either one can put up.
teobio 13 September, 2012 17:38
iPhone is by far the best and if i had the money, i would surely buy one.... until then the apple retail store will keep me happy
anonymous 13 September, 2012 17:48
i think the post is biased towards apple...
Content wise..it is more about iphone than the other 2..
anonymous 13 September, 2012 18:04
Could you include in your full review how easy the phones integrate (syncing using cable, WIFI , or cloud) with other PC's/devices and what information (bookmarks,diary,contacts,photos,ebooks...) and apps (browsers,diaries..) they will integrates with - how do they operate across the different platforms eg apple iPhone with Microsoft PC apps
anonymous 13 September, 2012 18:32
CNETare very biased. @1st comment what is the point of putting in the one x considering how popular the s3 is and @teobio you say it like its a fact when its not.
anonymous 13 September, 2012 19:15
this new apple has not brought any new features like s3 did like smart stay, recoginising faces, nfc ,smaert call
anonymous 13 September, 2012 19:38
Actually the new iPhone has lost some things, like Google maps and the original connector.
I just don't understand the obsession with thinness. Are designers intrinsically anorexic? Or are they so cut off from reality that they don't realize that battery life is the most necessary thing to upgrade? Just keep the same weight and width and put a larger battery in it. No one will complain if they can get two day use out of a top-end smartphone. If that had been the killer feature, I, as an Android user, would have rejoiced because I would have know that that would be the trend to follow. Not thinner and more sterile phones.
Mark Anderson 13 September, 2012 20:40
Err... the Lumia 920 has a higher PPI than the iPhone 5's retina display. It's better. Deal with it.
anonymous 13 September, 2012 20:47
Both phones look great, no big difference. A matter of preference. My choice is Lumia 920.
anonymous 13 September, 2012 21:17
I am from India don't get to use all the tech which is available in us but I love the iPhone the retina display so cool for the eyes ,the camera, the amazing games on retina with hd tech.its strong as it won't break if it falls.my ,music So cool to hear the sound.it look so solid looks great Iphone 5 in blk excellent finishing of the product .its shows high end branding everything cool about it. The Email and call alert features in iOS 6.EASY TO USE UNLIKE SAMSUNG. Just love it.
anonymous 13 September, 2012 21:46
@everyone!:;)(!.
Talk about Apple accusing Samsung of copying its designs. What about Apple trying to shed weight and girth ala Samsung?
anonymous 13 September, 2012 22:11
The iphone is a good phone, but it still playing catch up to the smasung s2 and s3. I have the s2 and my son and daughter have the s3. The s3 blast the iphone 5 to bits. However I have been a Nokia fan since the N95 . I use the Nokia n8 when abroad it can work without a sim card and has the best sat nave I have ever come across including tom tom. You dont have to pay for the maps and works without a sim card your travelling to another country the Nokia is a great phone to have with you. So on that basis and the new camera that takes great night time pictures , Plus windows 8 I just might return to the new nokia to see what else it has to offer.
anonymous 13 September, 2012 23:02
Comon I dont need upgrade .i need a new design ..The Iphone 5 design r totally boring ..dont u think u r holding a brick .... i think i better called it IFAIL 5 or IPHONE 4 XL .. Sooner or later Samsung will kick his butt...The first impression of a phone ..is the design ...!! n u dont have it ...
anonymous 13 September, 2012 23:10
Apple know other brands like Samsung are better and superior and even with their upgrades still fell short so they sue to eat into competitors profits. Idiots they are. They even changed connectors so all you who have a docking port in car or home will give them further money by buying a connector converter accessory.

Absurd video. As always more inclined to support apple. I dont 'own' a smartphone, but I use tham quite a lot. Any layman would certainly be influenced to buy an I phone after watching this. Cmon CNET! show some justice here. What is the point in making a video that gives a very vague description. You have to be precise. In fact the nokia lumia has got more pixel density than the IPhone, not "matches the IPhone". you did not speculate about the batery, not even Once! I, just like all unbiased viewers, can actually do far better than this. If you need help in creating "unbiased reviews" in future, please tell me.
And finally, Please dont make the Iphone as Cnets reference for future reviews. there are far better products out there. You know it.
anonymous 14 September, 2012 00:54
Everyone should boycot apple especially americans what the hell do apple do for the USA ? @#$€ them.
anonymous 14 September, 2012 01:10
C'mon Cnet, the Lumia 920 has a 4.5" display... How embarrassing!
anonymous 14 September, 2012 01:11
Planned obsolescence or built-in obsolescence- in industrial design is a policy of planning or designing a product with a limited useful life, so it will become obsolete, that is, unfashionable or no longer functional after a certain period of time. Planned obsolescence has potential benefits for a producer because to obtain continuing use of the product the consumer is under pressure to purchase again, whether from the same manufacturer (a replacement part or a newer model), or from a competitor which might also rely on planned obsolescence
anonymous 14 September, 2012 01:55
Cnet are you on apples pay role? This article is so one sided it's almost comical! I think we should boycott Cnet!

If have a iPhone 4/4S, Samsung Galaxy SII/S3, Nokia Lumia 900, Nokia N900. Just because I can because I did not drop out school and finished my school ;)! But when reading and comparing, you should have known better.. Even if you sucked at school. Fire this Reviewer and educate one who really is capable.
anonymous 14 September, 2012 19:29
i own a galaxy S3 and i can honestly say judging from what apple has introduced you wont be seeing many S3 users switching over, if any. being used to the 4.8 inches of screen and getting used to using the internet and watching movies with it i am pretty certain the 4 inch iphone offering will seem a little too small, its only natural if you are now used to a larger screen its like watching a 42 inch tv for 6 months and then seeing a friends 32inch and thinking damn its small for a 32 lol, but it happens.
however in regards to the specs, the biggest problem apple have is expectation, i aswell as many others im sure expected the iphone to come along and stomp all over the competition, however there is rumors that A6 processor is only dual core. now forgive me if im wrong but even if that dual core is epically fast, does it still not mean that the galaxy s3 among others are instantly more future proof, i mean when apps etc. start using quad core doesnt this mean the quad core processors will obviously come into their own. for apples sake i hope the A6 is quad core because many clued up people will see it as a big let down no matter how fast it is because quad processors will be implemented much more as time goes on.
in regards to the lumia. damn this phone looks like a real dark horse, very impressive specs ( besides the processor which seems standard fare ) the screen will seemingly be ace among other things, i think if it wasnt for the name samsung and apple have established for themselves the lumia would be a big big hit, unfortunately it just wont be and nokia among others ( motorola for instance ) are fighting a losing battle. what do you guys think? please reply to my post with your thoughts will be interesting to see if my view is shared. oh and one other thing, if the iphone 5 does turn out to be dual core does this not tell you that apple does not want it to be future proof due to the inevitable iphone 6, it seems apple wants to force customers to upgrade by designing the phones to be old tech very soon.
anonymous 14 September, 2012 19:32
Why does the S3 blow the IPhone 5 out off the water, 1 IT DONT BORING ANDROID OS, CRASH CRASH CRASH, POOR MANS IPHONE, ALL THEY DO IS COPY APPLE AND THESES PEOPLE WHO CAN NOT AFFORD THE IPHONE JUST MOAN ABOUT HOW GOOD THE S3 IS A BETTER PHONE, JELLY BEAN UPDATE WILL BE CRAP,
anonymous 14 September, 2012 19:38
I use to own 4 iPhone before i switched to the s3 what a mistake, don't like the OS widgets are no good, cheap plastic feel to the phone, one thing apple always does well they are well build not like a plastic piece of crap. random phones people when in my pocket, just pre ordered the iPhone 5 bye bye s3 have the poor mans iPhone back, worst fine ever had
anonymous 14 September, 2012 20:42
@anonymous 19:38, thats the most obvious load of rubbish ive every had the displeasure to read, you think people will believe you ever had a S3 lol and you are right iphones are nicely built but the cheap plastic s3 wont shatter like glass of the iphone 4. the biggest upgrade for the iphone was the rear aluminium plate, no bull. and to the guy above that ( most likely the same person lol ) saying the galaxy s3 is for people that cant afford the iphone, thats the silliest thing to say, you are clearly a teenager high on his own fizzy pop because the phones cost almost exactly the same, open your eyes and look at the facts kid.
anonymous 14 September, 2012 20:52
@anonymous 20:42 i totally agree with every word you wrote well said.
anonymous 14 September, 2012 21:03
You mentioned that the S3 and Lumia are the best devices in their respected OS. Why not the HTC One X for Android? It easily just as good, if not better than the S3. It looks better, sturdier, Sense is better than Tiuchwiz and the camera is also better. It's also only very slightly less powerful.
anonymous 14 September, 2012 21:10
Android IS NOT A POOR MANS iPHONE! Have you seen the price of it? It's what people prefer. Android gives you loads of things Apple doesn't like customisation. You can't do a thing with iPhone. Also, clever tricks like the notification bar was actually copied by Apple. It was first released on the iPhone 3GS whereas phones such as the hopelessly old Wildfire had it. Also 4 inches for a screen is soooo daft. Apple said they don't want to increase the screen size because it means portability is affected. Why increase it then? Because they know they can't deal with Androids bigger displays. And 4 inches? Come on, that was so three years ago. My bothers Desire S has that - nothing special. If your gonna increase it, make it worthwhile. Most people who go for iPhone are easily led by the logo. Eveyone thinks Apple means its the best. It doesn't. Admittedly the iPhone is good and some will prefer its OS to Androids, but not everyone does and you have no right saying its a poor mans iPhone.
anonymous 14 September, 2012 21:17
Hate it when you need to have an iPhone to be considered having the best phone. Galaxy S3 and One X are the best phones out there. I don't like Windows but I admit some of these Lumia phones look incredible. People are too easily led by the brand, not the product. People would by an awful slab for a phone if it meant it had the Apple logo on the back. The design may be nice, but it would easily shatter whereas the S3 wouldn't. The One X is sturdy and nice. I admit the iPhone 5 looks good, but if people look away from the brand, phones such as the S3 and One X are better in many key areas.
And I agree with what someone posted above. After owning a 4.7/4.8 inch phone, it will be very hard for them to drop to a 4 inch phone. It's true what people say about Apple not creating innovative products as they used to, though Steve Jobs was an absolute legend!
anonymous 15 September, 2012 01:22
I totally agree wit u, people are easly led by d logo @ d back lookin beyound i tink d s3 is certeinly d best followed by d lumia
anonymous 15 September, 2012 02:33
No USB on iPad, no SD storage for iPhone. No hdmi on MacBook. Must go though I tunes for music. other manufacturers like Samsung are making good products and not monopolizing on how they are used. Apple's strategy, Sue and eliminate
the competition. the only one who really loses is the the consumer. if Apple is successful the, s 3 will not be available here in the US. bummer.
anonymous 15 September, 2012 07:06
I own the s3 and upgraded early from the s2 , I love samsung and the choices offered by androids customizability but that's just me , all of the 3 phones mentioned and I'm gonna add the one x like it should have been are excellent smartphones , its simply about personal choice , each phone excells the other someway or the other , its like comparing Ferrari , Lamborghini and Aston Martin , arguing over which is the best is pointless , to be honest I think windows 8 is a dark horse , with Microsoft , Intel and nvidia on board and Nokia making good hardware again the android vs ios battle has a new contender , the next few years will be very interesting I think .
anonymous 15 September, 2012 10:27
why carry around a brick off a S3 when iPhone 5 fits so sweet in your hands, what they going to do next a massive 6 inc screen lol, the pix on the new iPhone is 326 to the s3 306!
bet all the s3 people can not wait for a Ice Cream Sandwich ISO beats android hand down.
anonymous 15 September, 2012 11:04
I personally think of the three that the lumia 910 is the best, but I would wait until Nokia released there budget version of the phone (basicly a new lumia 710) I love these phones but I just couldn't spend the money when a cheaper phone barley lose any features compared to a expensive model. But hey the Lumia 910 is a good phone!
anonymous 15 September, 2012 19:17
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Spnp16rzTNM bloke nail it on the head about the S3 he is right lol
anonymous 15 September, 2012 19:39
SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 SUCKS....
The SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 is seriously a piece of crap... The worst cell phone out there. The default txt program is comparable to pulling teeth, the spell check is retarded... The phone freezes with all those clever irrelevant android apps out there. The camera works when it wants and when you hold it in your hand something negative is bound to happen i.e call someone by accident or do something you did not want to do.... If your retarded and love to go through the many steps to call someone or do anything less productively then this phone is for you. I am going back to Iphone.
anonymous 15 September, 2012 19:43
I hate samsung
Samsung never produce good device. When it comes to Android I also hate it so much. The most unstable OS ever. If i can port Ubuntu to my phone i think it will be better. There is no reason if they produce quad core processor if the device still unstable. Lots of bugs while Iphone is much2 better then Android devices. I'm not sure about other Android devices but it seems Samsung just great in promotion. Nothing else. I want to wait until windows phone become stable. And of course I will buy it. Hopefully Windows will have better solution for smartphone. Not like Android, where most of their applications sucks!!! Lot of advertisement. !!! Just like I open a website with full of popups..That really disgusting!!! I have so much bad experience with samsung device. Its really bad. I will never buy samsung again. I own samsung wave, galaxy s 2, samsung note, and all doesnt give me happy ending. I own Samsung LCD monitor which only lasts for 2 years, I has samsung which only lasts for 1 year. My company have samsung notebook, I always have to troubleshoot it as it give so much problems.
anonymous 16 September, 2012 00:15
@the last to comments funny probably from same idiot, and learn some english fool unless your 7. If you hate Samsung so much then why have a long list of Samsung devices and still get an s3, another sign of your stupidity , you have probably never had one. Why the hell do you have to go through many steps to call someone are you thick? when one click and one swipe and i am ringing your mum.
You say its the worst phone out there when next to a few others its the best out there.
Your a joker have a good night
anonymous 16 September, 2012 17:06
it is very evil of the author to put those other two cheap and useless phones next to the beautiful and all powerful Apple and try to compare.
There is no other phone that can compare to iPhone. Do you think Apple do not know what they are doing? Apple is too great. They are the best, they make the most money, share price is $700 per share and still rising, the god is on their side, and girls like men who use iPhones. how can you compare them with anyone else when even the god is on their side?
anonymous 16 September, 2012 18:16

anonymous 17 September, 2012 05:10
at one time the Apple iPhone was very special. not anymore. the s3 is right there with it and arguably better. apple should be concerned since it won't be long before apple is left behind. they're hoping they could sue the competition away but it's not gonna work. the Apple iPhone is not so special anymore.
anonymous 17 September, 2012 09:49
iphone be it 4S or 5, without jailbreaking it, you lose a lot of fundamental functions in there. Apple is good in making software and designing a product but it is never good in making a basic phone.
The problem is if you jailbreak it, you can't upgrade to new OS version and if you tried to install or uninstall some programs, your jailbreak might break, and it will take about a day effort to make it back.
I had an iphone 4S before and it look really nice design, good apps in there but a half working apple since you have to jailbreak it. And trust me I have jailbreak more than 6 times because of this jailbreak instability and it is really a painful journey.
I have given up on APPLE and now using Samsung S3 which is a good phone, although I must admit Android apps and UI look is not as good as IOS. But it is more stable and doesn't need to jailbreak and has much more phone functions than the stupid iphone.
iphone also has another big problem which is the battery problem, if you use WIFI, push mail and does a few calls in a day, the battery won't last for a day and you cannot change the battery, hence you have to find a place to charge it like there was once I was in the airport and have to find a charging place desperately to charge that stupid phone.
I have kept my ipad 2 over than looking at Samsung or other Android tablets. Why? Because Apple is good at making them compared to them making phones.

I am an S3 owner , but I have owned many nokias and an I Phone and I believe what handset you choose depends on what you will be using the phone for:- The I phone has the most apps but the least storage and only a modest camera, Nokia has the best mobile camera tech and smooth O.S but precious few good apps but the samsung is the jack of all trades doing everything NEARLY as well as the I phone and nokia and is the most flexible boasting a removable battery , expandable memory and a host of ways of connecting wirelessly to anything anywhere! If this were a boxing match the samsung would win on points!

@anonymous10:31 very good comment and totally agree, love my s3. I do like the lumia 920 looks like a great phone!

It actually comes down to the hardware and not only the software! And having a look at that iPhone looks a bit out dated! Regarding the screen resolution, Nokia Lumia 920 is not matching iPhone, it's surpassing it! But comparing phones and writing reviews about which device is the best is a bit of a joke when you read that Apple has over two million orders on iPhone 5 already!
anonymous 18 September, 2012 05:19
Right 2 million people blinded by the apple logo. most of them don't even care if it's a better phone or not. if it's an Apple they just buy it and assume it's better.
it's not the case anymore. soon a lot of people will find out that there stuck in two
contracts what's an outdated phone.

Lol Samsung 3 has had jelly bean for a while now and more to the point its faster then ever with jelly bean which was the main reason it was used for it, so it would be even more slicker now compared to the iphone. I have a galaxy nexus gsm with the very latest of the various dif roms u can have on it and updates galore always rolling in and I must say the software absolutely blinding. And for 250 squid it can't be bad can it. I went past an apple store in Norwich lol there was more fanboy reps then customers. Anyhow I went in and asked for a bunch of bananas and they said they didn't sell them so I pointed towards all the rep fanboys dressed in f@ck@ng YELLOW and she asked me to leave the store hohoho

I'm curious how long you've been working for Apple? I'm not really biased one way or the other, although I am frustrated by Apple's obvious use of baby steps forward to release yet another "new" phone. However, Samsung is making major strides forward in terms of technology and I will gladly give them my hard earned money soon. Too bad I've waited over a year to upgrade my 3GS when I should've gone Android back then. But it's obvious you're bent towards Apple. Maybe if it actually was a better product.......
anonymous 21 September, 2012 22:47
Serious question.
Was this an advert for Apple?
Talk about bias.
After reading other unbiased reviews I will be purchasing the S3.
All the overpriced IPhone accessories will no longer work.
You know the IPhone don't you?
The phone that is a copy of a Sony phone.
Built with Samsung parts.
anonymous 22 September, 2012 13:12
Right....so.....how are any of them at actually making phone calls??? Last time I checked, that's a phone's primary purpose? Or is that just me? :-/
anonymous 23 September, 2012 16:21
If the lumia 900 is anything to go by, Lumia 920 will be best for phone features.
anonymous 25 September, 2012 12:50
My first smartphone was an Ericsson R380 which was in fact the first smartphone and my current one is a Samsung Galaxy S3.
anonymous 26 September, 2012 07:12
The S3 has 4 G LTE.. do your homework... isheep
anonymous 28 September, 2012 04:58
why do samsung make phone you can change battery in 3 batteries in 4 months old i phone3 battery still strong after 3 years dont make the mistake of getting s11 or 111 side by side tests done with iPhone and the s111 iPhone had better phone service on the same carrier side by side the Samsung galaxy kept dropping service iPhone 5 never so if you want the phone side iPhone is a far better choice also better in the pocket its still a phone samsung galaxy is too big thin some people making up for being small in other places by getting tablet re samsung galaxy s111 get real there suppose to be a phone that fits in your hand and pocket 2 hands to text is stupid

Jeez...some posters on here must be children....you must be!! It's extremely depressing if you're adults..."the S3 sucks, the IPhone is better.......the Luminus is better....". My 4 year old son is passed that sort of idle, childish comparison of "my toy car's faster than yours". I'm guessing none of have have girlfriends?

The iphone is beautiful, but im not a fan of the OS, i love android. The S3 is ugly, and too big, i dont think its a very fashionable phone, it does have some pretty nice specs which you could probably live without. The Nokia seems like a really cool phone, i like its specs and its style, im sure it will run smoothly, my issue though is that we know so very little about WP8, i'd have to let the OS mature for maybe 6 months before i went and bought a phone for it. I just couldnt live with the lack of apps which i enjoy on android, or could enjoy on iOS. We need phones like the Nokia and iPhone on android!

We have 3 Iphones which the wife and kids use in our house and i honestly think they are an amazing phone. I have spent years persuading my wife to carry a mobile to no avail until she received the iphone, now se goes nowhere without it. It would be wrong of me to comment on the other phones as i have not owned one but having a play on the S3 in the shop seems quite impressive. One thing i can say is that our phones have all suffered being dropped and are all still in perfect condition, very robust. The only concern I have is the size of the phones, the 4 and 4s are just enough to put in jeans pocket, if they get any bigger you might as well buy an ipad/tablet.
anonymous 13 October, 2012 12:30
Iphone 5 has a ppi of 326 and the lumia 920 has 332, maybe a little difference, but if the Iphone had the higher one cnet must have said that. Because it is lumia 920 who is the winner here, they dont. They say 'almost the same' no never! 1 is never equal to 2!! Cnet is american website thats why prefers american products. Cnet is not neutral.
anonymous 22 October, 2012 10:45
i choose for lumia 920
anonymous 3 November, 2012 09:38
its very difficult to choose a smart phone for me....so i am doing it my own way...going to buy a canon 550d SLR (Awesome camera) , AMD A10 Laptop .... n after 1 year will think about smart phone.
anonymous 4 November, 2012 08:21
I have been an Apple fan for a long time. IMac17, iphone, ipad so I am biased but this new iphone is a joke. The last redesign from 4 to 4s was disappointing but after all the hype over the last 6 months I was expecting something better than this. Battery life is still pathetic. Photos taken with flash are unusable, and changing the adapter plug is the last straw. I hope this kills off the ludicrous Apple share price. They don't deserve to succeed the way they abuse their loyal customers.

I now have both the Iphone 5 and a Lumia 920. Having used them both, but not on EE's LTE network I admit, I have given up the iphone to my wife. The Lumia is, I dunno, just a whole lot more slick. I don't even like Windows 8 on my desktop at home. I just pu-up with it. But there's no arguing that it's very, very good on this phone.

Such an incomplete review.. Lumia 920 is the clear winner here.. This is such an Apple Biased Review.. written by "YET ANOTHER APPLE FANBOY".

Author is a noob, simple as that
Saying Nokia's 8.7 megapixel camera is only 8 megapixel, wtf?
Also, he prefers Apple, so hence, noob

I had an iPhone 4s and I returned it(really worthless battery life, can not send an email with more than one attachements). I just show the Nokia Lumia 920. It is years ahead of iPhone. iPhone is just a joke comparing it to the 920. It used to look good but that's about it.
anonymous 22 December, 2012 07:22
i would prefer nokia lumia 920

if you buy some apple its either phone or laptop, I assure you, you will regret I've got IP 4 and Macbook air, the applications are very complicated, and if need some additional program for your gadget, you must go to I store and pay for it, because you cannot download it directly from internet to your gadget...

All the three competitors are the best among their own breed; but common guys lets accept the truth, among these 3 lumia 920 is the real ass kicker.
