25 Samsung Galaxy Note 2 tips

CNET How To

To you and me it's a big phone, to wilful language manglers it's a "phablet". Either way, Samsung's 5.5-inch monster Galaxy Note 2 stretches the boundaries of mobile gadgets as much as it does the sinews of your mitts.

With its ingenious S Pen stylus and Samsung's pen-driven TouchWiz tweaks to Google's latest Jelly Bean Android software, there's a bunch of features that are particularly useful on the Note 2. Here I'll explore 25 of the most handy ones.

Thanks to Vodafone for lending us a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for the purposes of this guide.

The S Pen

S-Pen

1. Air view
The Note 2's stylus, or S Pen, doesn't need to touch the screen to do something useful -- it can be detected while floating above the display too. This ability is used in various Samsung applications to trigger content previews such as the calendar (S Planner), or for showing video previews by floating above the timeline during playback.

2. Take a screenshot
If you hold the S Pen button down and hold the nib on the screen, a screenshot will be taken on which you can draw annotations before it's saved (see below left).

Taking screenshots

3. Take clippings
Holding the S Pen's button down and drawing a closed shape around anything saves the enclosed screen contents as an image (see above right). The image can be sent to the clipboard, sent as email or MMS, or saved in the S Note application for later.

4. Avoid losing your S Pen
To make sure you don't leave the S Pen behind, enable the detachment indicator. There is even an alert for when you walk away without the stylus. The latter didn't work during my testing though.

Text input

5. Handwriting input
Enable handwriting by tapping the button to the left of the space bar. The Note 2 is surprisingly good at understanding printed and cursive handwriting. Use the S Pen settings to indicate whether you're left-handed or right-handed.

Handwriting input

6. Single-handed input
The keyboard settings have an option for 'One-handed operation', where the portrait keyboard is pushed up to one side of the screen so everything's within reach of your thumb (tiny-handed folk aside). Not only that, but you can choose the portrait keyboard style -- either Qwerty or the traditional alphabet divided across a phone's number keys, as below.

Text input

7. Continuous input
A swipeable keyboard comes pre-installed on the Galaxy Note 2, and is enabled via the 'Continuous input' option. You spell out each word by drawing a line from letter to letter. This works in any keyboard style or orientation.

Settings

Settings

8. Blocking mode
This mode lets you block calls, notifications, alarms and timers and the LED notification light, either all day or between certain hours. The block mode has an 'Allowed contacts' feature so you can let chosen people bypass your blocking rules. Alternatively, this could be used to block nuisance callers.

9. Adjust colour tone
If you don't like the screen's colour reproduction, go to Settings, Display and then Screen Mode. There you can choose between Dynamic, Standard, Natural or Movie options.

10. Smart rotation
To prevent instances where the screen unintentionally rotates, forcing you to turn it back, there's 'Smart rotation'. This monitors your face and suppresses normal rotation if your face is tilted too.

Smart rotation.stay

11. Smart stay
The Galaxy Note 2 can use its front-facing camera to see if your eyes are still looking at the screen. If they are, it will keep the screen active, disregarding the normal time-out.

Home screens and widgets

Home screen widgets

12. Set up home screens faster with Easy mode
When you set up the Galaxy Note 2 for the first time, Easy mode is offered -- it gives you fewer home screens than Basic mode and is already populated with handy widgets for favourite applications, contacts and settings. Change between Easy and Basic modes any time via the Settings app.

13. Preview and add or remove home screens
Making a pinching gesture on any home screen will zoom out to a preview of all the home screens. From there, you can rearrange or remove home screens by long-pressing and dragging. Add more home screens by tapping the '+'.

14. Page Buddy: context-sensitive extras
The Galaxy Note 2 has added home screens that appear when they're needed and are denoted with corresponding icons in the page indicator row. For instance, when the S Pen is removed, a Pen Buddy page appears with a large widget for Samsung's note-taking application. Similarly, when earphones are connected, a page appears complete with music and video widgets.

Applications

15. S Voice
Tapping the home button twice launches Samsung's take on Apple's voice-operated butler, Siri. Its language interpretation isn't on the same level as Siri, but it can perform more functions such as telling it to "Disable Wi-Fi".

S-Voice

16. S Planner
The standard Calendar application is replaced and improved upon by Samsung's S Planner. Pinch and stretch gestures let you switch between year, month, week and day views. There are S Pen Air View previews of busy days in the month view. Also, it's possible to write on top of your calendar for rough planning and notes.

17. S Note
S Note is the application where you can be productive and creative with the S Pen. This note-taking application lets you save text, vector shapes and even mathematical formulae.

S Note

Battery life

18. Power Saving mode
The Power Saving mode can save energy in various ways and you can choose which ones are enacted when you flip the Power Saver switch. The options are CPU power saving, screen power level, background colour (whites in the web browser are given a blue tint), and disabling haptic feedback (vibrations).

Power saving

19. Manually disable features
The more hardware that's running, the more power is being drained from the Galaxy Note 2's capacious battery. Try disabling 3G data, S Pen Air View sensing, reduce the screen time-out time or switch off Smart rotation and Smart stay.

Miscellaneous

20. Task switcher with added control
You may have seen the Android 4 task switcher with thumbnails of running applications, but the Galaxy Note 2's switcher also provides shortcuts to the application manager and to close all running applications.

21. Take screenshots
The Galaxy Note 2 offers several ways to take screenshots. The basic method is holding Power + Home. As mentioned above, the S Pen can be used for making annotated screenshots. Alternatively, you can enable a right-to-left swiping gesture with your palm to capture the screen.

22. Motion controls
The motion settings allow for lots of gestures such as 'tilt to zoom', 'pan to move [homescreen] icon' and 'Quick glance' to activate the screen by simply reaching for the Galaxy Note 2.

Motion controls

23. Still camera effects
Samsung has customised the standard Android camera application. For example, holding the shutter icon will take a burst of images. Also check the image effects where you'll find a high dynamic range (HDR) mode and various colour effects.

Still camera effects

24. Video camera effects
The Galaxy Note 2 video camera has added effects too, including the same colour effects as above. There is also slow and fast-motion video capture, along with digital image stabilisation.

25. Floating video player
While viewing videos, you'll find an icon for Pop Up Play in the bottom-right corner of the screen that will take the video into a movable window on your home screens, so you can look up a website on a browser without having to pause the film.

It is amazing how any comment section always ends up littered with boring talk of who copied who.

'Blocking Mode' or 'Do Not Disturb Mode' aren't stand out features, just a generic part of any phone. Different names and different ways of activation.

If I hold down the power button on a Nokia 5146, I am sure I'd be greeted with Loud, Silent, Normal, Meeting and whatever other custom modes I created back in 1999.

Get over it.

quick, someone help me file a patent for a Button or Gesture or any means that initiates or brings to life a digital, electrical, mechanical, virtual, or any other conceivable device which when initiated does more than act as a paper weight! Or heck, include that too!

... I'm really getting sick of the stupid patent laws and the morons that cry foul over things that are so mundane.

Why on earth would anybody feel it his business to scathingly dictate what size might best fit my needs? I look forward to getting a chance to play with this gadget. I don't use my mobile phone much, maybe 15 hours a month, but frequently need a moving map for aviation and surface use, wish to use waiting time to read a book, or look up some arcane fact, catch up on the news... Seems this size might well be the best of all worlds, so far, for my needs, at least. Would that be all right with you, Damien? Even if it wouldn't meet your much worthier requirements?

Do not forget the split screen mode. Long hold the back button until you have a tab open on the left side, then hold one of those apps and move it to either the top or bottom half of the screen, then choose another app and move it to the opposite end of the first app and voila! Split screen action!!

Oh, now apple invented dnd, huh? If so its a ditto copy of smart actions from motorola? Anyone!!! Yesterday saw news that apple got another patent on any sort of unlocking on a touchscreen phone! Refer some news about it, u'll laugh ur heart out. Apple is jealous and childish, they can come with something new, drained ideas and they sue others and get a hold on them. Apple sued an departmental store in poland! Really innovative apple, yiur definning the term troller and being a bloke!

This Phone is just amazing, I've been using it for almost a month and is just awesome. The screen is gorgeous and is really a pleasure to read my news and feeds in it. Real multitasking, running two apps in the same window is just cool. And all the little details like just putting the phone to your ear to make a call are fantastic. Drawing and sketching with the pressure sensitive pen is natural and easy. And the size doesn't affect me, it fits in my pockets with no problem. Samsung really put the bar very high with this smartphone.

anonymous 13 November, 2012 22:41

by far the best phone on the market. Apple better watch out. Their innovation on the user experience has been lacking for some time now. same look and feel year after year.

I have worked for a mobile company for 2 years now and since I have been here I have vowed to never own an i product period. I have stayed true to that I have had every galaxy phone since the first. I love them, there is always something new to discover and they never let me down. The Note 2 is no different. Not everything is made for everyone. Be yourself, everyone else is taken.

To those still using the phone my advice is grow a pair of hands and buy the Note 2. I ve just realised obsolete and money wasting a normal phone is. You carry it in your pocket all day. Yet most of your contacts is through text which you struggle to read or write with a small screen. You try to read an article but your eyes are hammered before you complete it..... and all this, all this for about the same money or contract as the Galaxy Note 2

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 November, 2012 05:30

I just got mine and I love it!!!!! I used to have the HTC Evo 4g. One thing I miss is that if i zoomed in by a 2 finger jesture, the text in a post would automaticly resize and fit to the screen. This doesn't work on my Note 2. Does anybody know if there is a setting to fix this?

I've been looking all over the Internet about this phone, because I think it would be really great. Mostly all of the sites do not talk about music selection. Im a really big music person, but I listen to stuff that isn't popular. Does the galaxy note 2 have a great selection of music? I have an iPhone right now and apple has all of the music that I could ever listen to. Is the galaxy note 2 equivalent?

Note two is amazing so far..... I jut got it last night and this morning I had to grab my work Iphone 4 and was so disappointed with the "teensy weensy little guuurly phone", and just yesterday I was overly satisfied with the exact same Iphone 4. hmm ,The only reason apple lost me as a coustomer for now is the fact that I (the consumer) am a comodity who will go with whichever service is more innovative, functional, neat..... I was disappointed with the Iphone 5 and the lack of appearance change, screen size options, and hardware upgrades that I started to look at other optioins.
TL;DR
Got note @ love it.

Galaxy note 2. Is it a tablet? Is it a phone? Whatever It is it shouldn't exist and people look ridiculous using it. Buy a tablet people if you need the larger display. The reason these manufacturers keep upping the screen sizes is to add larger batteries to help with androids terrible battery management. What's next the nexus 7 phone?

I Just got the Note 2 & can say, it's excellent. Very powerful and fast. With unlimited internet access, & diff. browsers I can do all my important tasks on the go.

As for the stylus, it is actually great to use for some tasks.

Diff. Strokes for diff folks. This folk is not impressed wi iPhone.

With the larger screen I can even RDP into my home PC.

anonymous 5 December, 2012 10:45

All I can say that Note 2 battery is excellent.. My phone is one battery for 28 hours and still has 35% or battery. I can't say I'm a heavy user, but I'm not a light one either. :)

Even my friend who is a hardcore caller (got like +3000 contacts) really liked note 2 battery over galaxy s2 he owned previously and decided not to get a spare battery for note 2.

I wrote on my calendar and saved it but then couldn't find it and what i wrote no longer showed on the calendar. I later found the note i wrote in with my photos. what's the use of writing on the calendar if it's not saved there?? i hope this is soon corrected.

I now have a Galaxy Note 2, and I am thinking I may prefer Apples IOS. I must say the screen size is a relief for my older eyes; web browsing, etc., and there is clearly more options to customize your phone or tablet. However, getting used to the Google interface reminds me of when I dumped my pc for an iMac (I've never regretted that) But, it was kind of like having to learn to walk all over again. After two weeks, I'm far less excited about the Note 2 than I was my first couple of iPhones. In the end... I am really hoping Apple comes up with a better iPhone 6 than they did with the iPhone 5. If they get back to that level of creativity and innovation I'll be on-board with their next release.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 10 December, 2012 03:10

First poster, your a moron bag of douche, also to the person calling the whambulance over battery, the note 2 has outlasted my iPhone by far,i have had every iPhone since day one release, tried HTC evo, hated it, went back to iPhone, then found out how apple plays games with their customer base, and how the jailbreak is their way to test out a large amount of tweaks and changes for the next phone.its all a cat and mouse hoax, then right before a new device, boom all the jailbreak mods you use become part of the firmware and they bloat the software strategically to slow the phone to make the newer phone seem so much better, then release the new one missing half of the promised features"coming soon" hell, the kid who invented the jailbreak works for them GOOGLE IT
...so
who's the iSHEEP...apple fanboys... oh look no bullshit autocorrect...lmao

Going from a Droid 2 Global to this is mind blasting. My girlfriend and I both got this phone and couldn't be happier. There are so many things to tinker with to make this phone fit you perfectly.

The size might look silly but I'd rather look silly and enjoy a beautiful large screen. I was content with the size of my D2G but I don't know if I could go back to something that small.

It seems like Apple is more focused on bickering and legally one upping it's competitors rather than innovating and creating a better product.

I have had my note 2 about a month now, not only is it the best mobile ive ever owned it does every thing I need for my business. as a driving instructor I keep notes via s note on all my pupils, I take pictures of them holding up their pass certificates, it acts as a great navigater when mounted on my 360 degree mount from accessary village at £3.95p and who says you have to look like a plonker holding it up to your ear the sound quality on open speaker is excelent and if you want to splash out £5 to £20 on a decent bluetooth its the perfect setup i have had a plantronics explora 220 for over 4 years now and the batt still last at leist a couple of days it is so light and comfortable that i forget im wearing it and the sound quality is excelent it also does voice recocnition calls so i dont have to touch my note 2 to make calls even when its in my pocket. I liked this setup so much that when i saw a plantronix explora 220 on ebay last week i had to have it and won it at the fantastic price of £4.95p brand new. cant say enough how good the note 2 suits me the video is great for recording and downloading treasured memories of my grandchildren and the still camera saves me carrying my nikon kit when going fishing or just holiday snaps, or should one of my pupils have a bump in the car its there for those important insurance claim photo. i use s voice for every thing on google finding resturants information and even cheating in pub quizes nobody sees me touch my mobile i just talk to it and it tells me the answers, how good is that. samsung your brillient

Great phone, very popular in China. I've been using the note ii now since boxing day after getting my iPhone 5 stolen. I'm learning the new OS quick. Some good tips in the article..

A few things I do find frustrating or it might just be my iOS was odd thinking.

1. Is there an undo button? Shake to undo?
2. Just holding the phone up right in bed and navigating through the settings can you turn the touch sensitivity down - on more than one occasion I have toggled a setting on or off with my right thumb and have no idea what just happened.
3. When I try to close an app down I a struggling, hold the home key then try and close it down manually it warns me i may cause errors???
4. How can I turn on a spell check?

Great phone, really like the size of the screen just not a fan of how sensitive it is on the home screen and settings.

Do not forget the split screen mode. Long hold the back button until you have a tab open on the left side, then hold one of those apps and move it to either the top or bottom half of the screen, then choose another app and move it to the opposite end of the first app and voila! Split screen action!!

First, thanks for the great review :) I just received my Note 2 and there's a few things that I can't manage (note sure if it's my fault or they don't work). The "alarm" for the S-Pen when it's far, the gesture (or the manual mode) for the screenshots (and believe me I have tried, at least the S-Pen way does work) and I have no idea why or how I have change the settings (I'm pretty sure this it's my thing) so now when I write with the S-Pen it does not recognise my writing (it's suppose to appear some pop-up, but no clue why it does not :( ). hi, I'm having trouble setting my internet home page. if I look at the settings, it shows google, which I want and set up, but when I close out the browser and reopen, it's a blank page. Again at that point if u check the home page in settings, it's still shows google. as a matter of fact, the blank page has always been my home page from the start, instead of my service provider. thanks!

One thing that really excited me about the note 2 was the feature where you can record the screen and voice. Ideal for adjusting graphs or drawings while explaining what you are doing. Simply press and hold up volume and home button. However it doesn't work on my note 2! I feel cheated!

The phone is excellent but I am disappointed that I can only do one 3 way calling, because of verizon network. When you make a call, and you call the 3rd person, once you have finished talking to the 3rd person and you hung up, everyone gets cut off. So that sucks. You should be able to remain on the line with the first person you called, but it does not work that way. The way it looks, you will have wait until that 3rd person hung up so you can keep talking to the first person you called. Not good, because you do not know if that person has hung up. So no privacy at all.

Jesus guys. Apple have nothing original so just leave it. My old Nokia from 2000 has the same as the 'do not disturb' function. I used it do only mum could contact me. Who cares if 2 phones have the same thing. Apple are probably the best at stealing ideas and claiming its their own. Atleast Samsung arnt claiming its theirs

4 days in to my new sgn2 and suddenly all other phones seem really small. Very very imoressed so far. Was concerned about the size but it really is not a problem. Love the sliding text input thing what a time saver. If t you are wondering about getting one stop-just go for it no regrets.
