How to go back to a stock Android ROM on Samsung Galaxy S2

CNET How To

Hacking your phone and installing custom ROMs is a riveting pastime, packed with thrills, danger and plenty of skipped heartbeats. It can also give you a user interface that's slicker, faster and generally more suited to your own tastes. But even the most dedicated hacker sometimes wants to repent and return to the official software, and here I'll show you how.

The past few months have seen an explosion in the number of Android 4.0 custom ROMs for the Samsung Galaxy S2, largely down to the fact that Samsung -- along with the mobile networks that control the updates -- made a pig's ear of getting Ice Cream Sandwich onto the S2. So last month we published a guide on how to load a custom ROM onto your phone.

That situation has changed and all of the major UK networks have now upgraded their S2s to the latest iteration of Google's software. That means you can legitimately get a taste of the new ice-cool OS without having to void your warranty by flashing firmware.

If you're one of the many impatient people who have already installed a custom 4.0 ROM to your phone, then you may well be sat there wondering how you can get your beloved blower back on the straight and narrow with the officially sanctioned update. Fear not, read on and you'll learn how, plus a whole lot more besides.

Getting started

Android OS recovery - downloads

First up, you'll need to make sure that you have the latest Samsung drivers installed on your PC, otherwise your phone won't be recognised. Samsung's site has the stuff you need, so point your browser there if you're unsure.

Next up is Odin, which is the piece of software that handles the magical process of flashing firmware to your phone. Download Odin here.

Finally, you'll want the firmware you wish to flash. Unless you're especially smitten with the additional bloatware your particular network operator sees fit to install on its Galaxy S2s, you're best off going with the unbranded UK 4.0.3 firmware, which can be downloaded from here. If you'd rather use a carrier-branded offering, have a look around this thread to find the one you're after.

Restoring stock firmware to your phone

Before you attempt to do any of the steps outlined below, make sure that Samsung's Kies software is not running on your machine. Kies has an unfortunate tendency to cause problems when Odin is attempting to communicate with your device, so ensure it is either disabled or uninstalled entirely. It's also worth noting that following the steps outlined below could wipe your handset, so be sure to back up anything you don't want to lose, just in case.

Android OS recovery - OS download

Once you've got everything set up correctly, completely switch off your phone. Once it's off, press the volume down button, home button and power button together. Use the volume up key to place the phone in Download Mode and you're ready to flash that lovely stock firmware to your device. Connect your phone to your computer using a standard micro-USB cable. If you get a message informing you that your phone hasn't been installed correctly, you'll need to grab those Samsung drivers we alluded to earlier.

Android OS recovery - download mode

Open up Odin and click the 'PDA' button. Find the official 4.0.3 firmware you downloaded to your computer moments previously and select it. Note that this file has been compressed, so you may need to install WinRAR to extract it before loading into Odin. WinRAR is available as a free trial and can be downloaded here. Once installed, you should be able to extract the firmware by right-clicking it and selecting the WinRAR option from the menu. Having selected your extracted firmware in Odin, ensure that only the 'Auto Reboot' and 'F. Reset Time' boxes are ticked in Odin's user interface, then click start.

Odin will work its magic and flash the official firmware to your device. Once it's finished, your phone will reboot automatically, and you'll be the proud owner of a Galaxy S2 with stock (and all-above-board) Ice Cream Sandwich firmware.

Android OS recovery - upgrading

What if it all goes wrong?

Of course, when you're playing around with firmware, there's always the risk that your handset will go belly up. Panic not! Click here for our guide on how to recover a bricked phone.

To get all the latest phone reviews, news and features beamed direct to your Android device of choice, head to the Google Play store and download the free CNET Android app today.

Updated: Broken links fixed and information added on how to extract the compressed firmare before selecting it in Odin.

Odin does not recognise the ".7z" file downloaded above. So I assume you have not checked what you have written. Good Work!

anonymous 9 May, 2012 10:32

You need to unzip the file first, it's a compressed file

Well done to you for trying to flash a compressed firmware. Good Work! (as you said it)
Just ask instead of being sarcastic and know-all, trying to point out flaws in what someone wrote to help you out.

what firmware do you recommend for giffgaff? i'm currently using the official O2 firmware, which seems to work fine accept my inability to get rid of the annoying 'set up software update' notification. i can't set it up and i don't know how to get rid of the notification.

Thanks for the tutorial. Works well. However, even though I have restored to a stock ROM using the steps above, I still can't perform software updates via Kies. After performing the above steps and upgrading to the stock ROM, when I plug my handset in and start Kies, I get "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies". Does that mean I'll have to use Odin for every single upgrade from here on in?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 30 June, 2012 09:58

Not sure why but both WinRAR and 7-zip failed to correctly extract the file for me, I found out a program called J-zip will work though. Just be sure to choose custom installation and uncheck the box for installing the search addons.

Hi, I followed the steps to flash to 4.0.3 but I got it failed in Odin and therefore I cannot go back to my previous working version. I got to hidden.img it then failed in Odin. I have tried Odin 1.83 and 1.85 and 2 different usb cables but to no avail. I can still get into download mode on the phone. What should I do next? Thanks.

Er, it isn't CNETs firmware; they're just linking to it.
Anyway, worked fine for me.
Thanks for the guide & sorry about some of the more idiotic comments; don't let them stop you from posting further helpful pieces.

Very, very grateful for finding this blog! I had awful problems with a root and not getting past the root triangle. Ch-mod showing it freezing at the t-mobile splash screen. Needed a firmware, flashed and worked perfectly. Thank you very much for the post and the links. I now have a working phone and no more bloatware!

You are completely AMAZING, I had tried a couple of Stock ICS files after backing out of rooting my S2 and all of them wouldn't update the firmware using Kies, this one that you supplied was a different story however, Currently updating my ICS to 4.0.4 as we speak and that shows me that it will update to 4.1 JB once it's available! Very happy chappy here.

For those who couldn't get it to work, this file is for EU based handsets, also, it's a zip file (Ends in .7z) You must download J-zip (and make sure you uncheck all the bull like toolbars etc etc during install) and extract the .md5 file from within the .7z, THEN use Odin on it. works a treat.

Major kudos to the original poster for helping me to save my handset from the doom of never getting upgraded firmware! :P

Took a risk and disconnected. Phone restarted ok - thank goodness - with existing firmware.

Had a problem at first, seemed to boot back up with all the original settings??!! Then displayed an error saying that an android process was failing, then phone would freeze and then shut down. Booted the phone into recovery mode (home key + power + volume up), selected a factory reset and the phone booted up without any further issues.

Thanks so much mate, your guide was spot on. Tempted by a jelly bean update now.......

Thanks Damien McFerran for this article. You saved the day!
I messed up my S2 running 4.0.3 (India) by trying to install a new custom font. My phone got stuck while booting up. Even wipe couldn't solve it. I followed all steps carefully and successfully completed the process. Soon after installation, I got an OTA update to 4.0.4. Thanks!!

Tips to others:
1. The ROM mentioned above works well.
2. Carefully follow the steps. Be patient. During boot after install, it takes so much time. Don't stop. Let it complete.
3. For Software Update, choose your country as United Kingdom. No harm. You'll get 4.0.4 OTA update.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 December, 2012 17:21

I followed this correctly, and the phone just hangs at the startup animation. The screen moves around and the S shimmers still, so it doesn't seem to have frozen. But, it never progresses on from there. I waited about 10 minutes. Nothing. I will try reflashing it, just in case it was a little bit off or something... Thanks though.

After following the post above I thought I absolutely screwed my little SGS2 - it went into a reboot cycle and no amount of reflashing would resurrect it.

I went from CM9 back to a stock Vodafone AU firmware (4.03).

My little tip after thinking I absolutely screwed up my phone is to go into Upload mode and select 'Wipe Data/Factory Reset', 'Clear Cache'.

Note this will obviously kill a lot of data on your phone (Messages, Contacts, etc.) but it got me out of my bind.
