Toshiba Satellite U500

The 13.3-inch Satellite U500 is thick and heavy, but it looks great, with an appealing brown finish. Its keyboard is very comfortable, its performance is decent, if not mind-blowing, and it's available with a touchscreen, if that's your bag. Just don't expect the best image quality in the world

MSI Wind U135

The 10-inch Wind U135 netbook doesn't disappoint. Its next-generation Intel Atom N450 processor doesn't deliver significantly better performance than older Atoms, but it does contribute to this machine's lengthy battery life. Together with the comfortable keyboard, it all adds up to a solid package

Archos 9 PC Tablet

Running Windows 7 and sporting an 8.9-inch resistive touchscreen, the Archos 9 PC Tablet certainly looks the part, although a speedier processor would've been welcome. It does many things that Apple's iPad can't and we reckon it'll prove cheaper, but which tablet will be top dog remains to be seen

The 15.6-inch UL50Vt is an excellent desktop-replacement laptop that you'd be proud to take to and from the office. It looks great for a machine of its size, it's comfortable to use, it offers excellent battery life, and it has switchable graphics cards that let you prioritise either battery life or performance

Acer Aspire Timeline 1810T

The 11.6-inch Aspire Timeline 1810T is a great alternative to a netbook, offering the same degree of portability with an added smattering of comfort. Its battery life isn't exceptional, but the 1810T is faster than most netbooks and offers a splendid keyboard that's remarkably easy to type on

MSI GT640

The 15.4-inch GT640's desktop wallpaper proclaims that it's the fastest quad-core laptop in the world. That's wishful thinking, but this machine is certainly capable of satisfying even the most demanding user. It's also cheaper than many of its rivals, so, if you can stomach its appearance, it's worth a look

Eee PC 1005P

The Eee PC 1005P is almost identical to the Eee PC 1005PE, but has a smaller hard drive and costs slightly less. Its next-generation Intel Atom N450 CPU doesn't provide a big performance improvement over its netbook predecessors, but its battery life is corking and it looks good too

The iPad looks to bridge the gap between the smart phone and the laptop, at the same time as taking on MP3 players and ebook readers. Its slick design, speedy processor, good connectivity and plethora of features may make it a living-room staple across the land, but only time will tell

Thanks to its dual-core Atom processor and Nvidia Ion graphics chip, the 12.1-inch Eee PC 1201N Seashell offers among the best performance you'll find from a netbook. Its battery life isn't much cop by today's netbook standards, but this machine is well worth a look, especially if you fancy a spot of light gaming

The 10.1-inch Mini 5102 is an updated version of one of yesteryear's better netbooks, the Mini 5101. While it doesn't really deliver any performance improvements, it's a solidly built machine that now offers a number of configuration options, including a touchscreen

Asus G51J 3D

The G51J 3D is the first laptop to incorporate Nvidia's 3D Vision technology. Its 15.6-inch screen has a disappointingly low resolution, and it's by no means cheap, but this is a powerful machine and the 3D system generally works well, making for an impressive gaming rig overall

The 10.1-inch Eee PC 1005PE is the first netbook we've seen with Intel's next-gen Atom N450 CPU. This chip doesn't offer a massive performance boost over previous Atom offerings, but it does contribute to this system's excellent battery life, and the 1005PE is a handsome machine to boot

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge

If you're after a thin laptop with built-in business software that you won't be ashamed to be seen with out of hours, the 13.3-inch ThinkPad Edge is a decent choice at an affordable price. The lack of an optical drive is annoying, but the keyboard, touchpad and screen are very good

It's on the heavy side for a machine of its type, but the high-end configuration that we reviewed is a capable performer, and it's an impressive package overall

The 16-inch CX600 offers superb value for money, with a nippy processor, a gaming-capable graphics card and plenty of memory. It's not particularly attractive and its lack of an HDMI output is a real shame, but, at this price, this machine is very difficult to ignore
