We've been rather taken with some of Acer's recent laptops, especially the Blu-ray toting 6920G, so when we were offered the chance to preview its latest machine -- based on Intel's brand-spanking-new Centrino 2 platform -- we jumped at it.

The Acer Aspire One arrives fashionably late to the mini laptop party, but it sashays in with flair. Available in either Linux or Windows XP versions, the One is attractive, lightweight and offers great performance for a low price. Does it spoil the netbook night for the Eee PC?

A very well-built laptop, the Acer TravelMate 6592 is a solid desktop replacement. It boasts an ergonomically curved keyboard for comfy typing. A reasonably powerful spec, good connectivity and acceptable battery life round out a well-priced package

The budget Acer Aspire 3694WLMi laptop holds its own in the performance stakes and its 15.4-inch glossy screen offers better colour reproduction than most. It's also well connected with four USB ports and a card reader makes it easy to transfer snaps from your camera

Acer Ferrari 5000

This is a premium laptop with an AMD (also a Ferrari sponsor) processor -- the Ferrari brand pushes the performance angle, which is a useful excuse to push up the price. That demands a high specification, so Acer has loaded it with features, including a high-resolution display, loads of memory and decent graphics

Acer TravelMate 3022WTMi

With the ultraportable TravelMate 3020 series, Acer has let its hair down and come up with a striking white system. This Core Duo-based laptop is a good performer and has a neat built-in digital camera. However, we'd prefer an integrated optical drive (even at the expense of a little extra weight)

Acer Aspire 9802WKMi

It's too large to be considered a traditional laptop, and it lacks the upgradeability of a desktop PC. However, like the well-received M2010, the Aspire 9802WKMi does have a place. It should appeal to users who want a Media Center computer with a large screen, plenty of power and moderate portability

Acer TravelMate 3012WTMi

Acer's second dual-core laptop, the TravelMate 3012WTMi is a small, light and highly portable computer. Its wide-screen format, built-in camera and Bluetooth VoIP phone should all appeal to users who travel -- especially those who use the Internet for voice and video calling

Acer Travelmate 8204WLMi

We're not joking. Acer has sped this Core Duo laptop to market, and it's the real thing: portable, with excellent battery life and it's blisteringly quick. It may not be the epitome of style, and dedicated gaming laptops may have better graphics cards, but for under £2,000, this is a fantastic bargain

Michael Schumacher has one of these -- but only because some oily Acer PR gave it to him. It's sitting at the bottom of his wardrobe because its performance is a long way shy of his exacting Teutonic standards... we imagine.

Acer TravelMate 2355LCi

Acer's new TravelMate is cheap as chips, but don't expect lengthy use when out of reach of a power socket. It packs enough punch to run office applications perfectly smoothly, though, and it has a large screen for a budget model
