Review:
I just got this laptop yesterday, and I've been using it ever since. My first impression was that it looked like an Acer, with the speakers up top. To me, that's not a good thing. I never even booted into the copy of Vista Home Premium it came with, I formatted both partitions on the 120GB 5400RPM hard drive, and installed Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and then service pack 1. By the way Windows rates the hard drive a 5.1. I have to say that I noticed very soon, the graphics card is horrible. Windows rates my graphics a 3.1, and my gaming graphics a 2.5. I know, that since I have 3.00GB of DDR2 RAM, that affects how the graphics work. I learned this with my IBM ThinkPad z61t 9442. I must say I still like that machine better than my Pavilion. Anyhow, minimizing programs, closing programs, and using the Flip-3D within Vista is awful. I have 128MB of video memory in it, so i don't know why it's this bad. Usually I dislike AMD Processors, but this AMD Turion 64 x2 @ 2.00GHz is very nice. It's rated a 4.8 by Windows. In all, I'm happy with the processor. The RAM is something else. 3.00GB is great with Windows Vista. It's fast and rated a 4.9 by Windows. I must say the hard drive is louder than my ThinkPad or HP Compaq nc8230 I'm using as a large flash drive now. The speakers on the Pavilion are a bit tinny, but most laptops are. They are loud enough though. The DVD burner and multi recorder is a very nice drive, I wish I went for the light scribe. The keyboard isn't bad, but I'll have to get used to it coming from a ThinkPad. The trackpad is very large, and works great. I like the media buttons under the speakers, they're responsive. Performance with this is good, but not better than my ThinkPad with an Intel Centrino Duo T2500 @2.00GHz, 2.00GB of DDR2 RAM, 100GB 7200RPM hard drive, and an Intel 945 256MB graphics card. My pavilion is now my media machine, since it has an incredible screen. The ThinkPad is a 14.1 inch 1280x800, so that's now my heavier processing unit. In all, the Pavilion is a very good computer for the money, and I recommend it, as long as you don't require a stellar graphics card.
