How useful is the sat-nav in the Nokia N95?
I really want to love the sat-nav in the Nokia N95. It's a great idea to integrate the GPS chip and software into the phone -- anything that means I can leave one of my devices at home is a good thing as far as I am concerned.
The problem is that my expectations were too high. I was expecting a TomTom-quality experience, but the reality is a lot different. There are no pre-installed maps for one thing. Instead, the N95 downloads local maps using the 3G or built-in Wi-Fi.
Even though these are fast data connections, it's a little irritating waiting for the map to download, and if you want to scroll left or right, the phone pauses while it downloads extra chunks of info.
It's also a bit tricky to get a signal -- it took me a good five minutes standing in the freezing cold before it worked out that I was standing near Milton Keynes, not Dusseldorf. It doesn't work indoors at all, unfortunately. Admittedly, neither do a lot of sat-navs, but somehow it feels like it should work indoors because it's a phone.
But just as I was starting to hate the GPS functions, I realised that it's not really meant for traditional sat-nav stuff. Sure, you can use it in your car if you buy all the extras, but it's really all about making sat-nav personal.
When you've just come out of the Tube and you can't find the bar you're looking for it's ideal -- and that's just enough reason in my book to buy one. I'm off to Carphone Warehouse now.

Incorrect. The N95 does have pre-installed maps, some networks include them on the mem card, if not they can be downloaded from the Nokia website. I find the GPS almost the equal of Tom Tom etc

Once you have the pre-installed Maps on the N95, you can search and find address(es) which is really useful. What you have to pay for is the activation of the Navigation system i.e in 300 yards turn left, then take second on the roundabout...... You can however run a simulation on the unit to test before paying the fee to activate.

I'm on O2 and upgraded to the N95 only last week. Initially it was all good, the GPS worked, the camera took good shots, the music software is very intuitive and receiving and making calls is not a problem. However I found big problems when using the WLAN the phone would drop the connection and just hang when trying to access the WLAN option again. Also when setting up the 3D Ringtones it would freeze. It would freeze you out of the application you were in but still allow you to use other functions. I had to remove the battery several times. Having owned several versions of the XDA family of phones I found them much much more reliable, they are based on the Pocket PC OS, the Nokia uses the Symbian OS. The XDA has a very useful reset switch at the base which saves you removing the battery and WLAN browsing is a breeze. I'm switching back to my XDA while waiting for the N95 to be swapped at my door sometime soon. Fingers crossed the next one holds it all together.

Jon The Sat Nav is free and it will plan routes no problem, allow you to search etc... You have to pay (approx £40-£50) if you want it to track you and call out the route as you are driving. i.e. Turn left in 300 yards etc...

ohhh and the best thing to do to get the basic sat nav to work is to go into maps ->view sat info and leave it on this screen make sure when u press this your outside or do it and start driving (drive for 5 mins) when you stop you will notice bars with numbers on them and they will fill black when the sats are found then go onto plan route and chose gprs position and it will find you on the map with a blue cross hair TADAA hope this all hepls

I have owned an N95 for 5 days. I have read all the booklets and info that came in the box with the phone about the Sat Nav. I was begining to think it was just me being a techno-phobe. But i have picked up more info and advice in the 10 mins i have been on here, than i did in all the hours of head scratching while flicking through the instructions. Thank you everyone... John.

i love this phone i got it doing everything i want it too using the pod cast features is great catching up on my mills and moyles now !! guys if any one has any problems with sat nav mail me on pastorey@talk21.com hope my previous info helps and just to clairify the sat nav is FREE just you pay those above charges for the turn left turn right commands to be shouted out and also for it to retrack you if you go off course. the basic one just brings up a map with plotted course and either 1. gives u instructions step by step in text format 2. gives u a map 3. gives u a map and u can then get it to plot your course (you can switch it into a really cool 3d view) and it will track you as you drive (the plotted course comes up with roads in blue)

I am typing this on my n95, via wireless network for free at Glasgow airport. The n95 is incredible, i agree with previous comments that instructons and manual information is very limited in this field. Using the satnav is free up untill you want it to start helping you to get from A to B. I will not be purchasing this as i have Tomtom. However the facility is impressive, even in walk scenario. The only downside is that it may take up to 5min to log onto 3-4 GPS satellites and for one of them to at least to turn black to confirm locked geogrpahical position.

I've had my N95 for a month now. Although its not perfect- it does crash sometimes- the GPS works well when it locks onto the signal. Planning routes is free, its just the voice navigation that costs extra. Make sure that you download the Nokia Maps that you need when your phone is plugged into the USB on your computer. You can down load countries, such as England or US States or the whole of Australia. Some countries like Indonesia will download, but there is no detailed information. The wifi also works well and best of all is Fring which allows free skype calls and MSN messenger when you have a wifi signal. The camera is excellent for a phone.

A bloke at work bought an N95 the week before i did. We both had a play around with the phones i.e. trying out the sat nav. We both had difficulty in getting it to work. However, he owned a TomTom system seperately to his phone so he deleted the software from the N95 and installed the TomTom onto his phone. Works a treat!!

things people need to know.. GPS data is free (the gps antena is under the 0 on the keypad). Assisted GPS cost money , Network based cost money.(you can uncheck them and also use external BT gps as well) Nokia maps can be downloaded Via your computer to your N95 via usb BT or wi-fi. The phone runs on symbian operating system. Which means there will be very little choice in software to buy for this phone and will be at a higher price. yes stand alone GPS software will run if its made for symbian. Im trying to avoid saying Windows Mobile, but it is better in the way that companies are writing programs for it. As well as all the smart freeware people writing programs for that platform. wi-fi is difficult to setup. I personally am having trouble connecting to my wi-fi at home, the phone and the computer just refuse to talk (much like my last girlfriend and myself) Dont expect to be just be cruising through your shopping center and having hotspots popping up to connect to (everyone wants to be paid for services). Phone is excellent bluetooth works great. The rest is a gimic

I find the sat nav very good on the N95. once it has found your GPS position it is usually accurate and gives the route correctly but i think there is a BIG flaw. as liquid Ingress automatically voids the warranty on your phone there is no way you can use it on a rainy day!

the N95 8gb phone.... the sat nav is free, ie it will show you every turn by turn and follow you on your route. all that is free. is it not just the voice that requires payment, ie "please turn left in 300 yards". one of the lads has the N95 and his works great without the voice, like i said, turn by turn it will follow you on the map and display a blue line on your required route, all this for free. if he wants the voice, he pays for it. surely nokia are not now saying that the N95 8gb phone now reuires payment for everything, should it now be the same. can any one PLEASE PLEASE help, this is driving me silly

I've just bit the bullet and upgraded to the N95 Black (8GB) on O2 for free. My little brother has had this phone since new and loves it to bits, especially with the fact that he can sit at home and surf the net through our home wlan for no extra charge. He has been reluctant to use the sat nav feature as thought he would be separately charged on his bill for using it at all. I now know this is not the case and will try it out as soon as I've recieved mine. I'm pretty sure you can only browse maps and plan your route for free, but if you want it to track you you have to pay a small fee, which I may do anyway. Overall gadget-packed and seems like an ideal phone for all the tech heads out there. Music player is good and speakers fairly loud. Youtube buffers very quickly to with wlan!

I have just got my N95 and for the last 2 days been trying to fathom the sat nav. First problem was the orange shop assistant forgot to put in the free memory, useless staff at that company. Anyway finally think ive sorted it, dont want to pay £47 a year for voice commands, and every one keeps saying the sat nav is free but, every time I request a map, or direction etc its down loading and after just having a £300 bill for data downloading ( this was dropped after I appealed about the untrained staff not notifying me of these hideous "out of bundle" charges. As far as I am awar I have downloaded the maps on my laptop and transfered them via the PC suite. I dont want to spend a month using my phone like a tom tom then getting another whopping bill for data downloading. When I got this phone the main reason was for the "free sat nav"....can any one shed any light. ??

I've just bought the N95 8GB and like a lot of people was attracted to the phone because of the GPS. What is disappointing is this issue we have to pay for voice command - I wouldn't mind a reasonable one-off fee as built into the price of a tom tom or garmin, but an annual charge (that seems to increase by the month) is a bit much. Nokia sort yourselves out - £40 licence for the service and then free. Oh for those worrying about data charges - Unchecking A-GPS and Network GPS in the positioning menu stops any data charges.

Sat nav works ok, down load maps for free from nokia.com. Everything is free except for actual turn by turn navigation which costs about £5 for a month or £40 for a year. It is not as good as a proper decent usual sat nav but its on a phone! if you dont want to pay anything you can use the tracking feature, where you basically have a blue line on the display that you follow. The bad thing with this is that it always has north at the top(at least it does on my basic N95) which is a pain that it doesn't aurentate to the direction your going.

I have just signed a contract with 3G for a Nokia 95. I wished I had never done it and I will try to cancel the contract and return this damn mobile. First of all nobody tells you what the system requirements should be to be able to install the PC Nokia Suite. Which is essential. Ver 7.0 requires XP SP2 as a minimum. Ver 6.85 works also with Windows 2000 SP4, but you cannot get it from Nokia any longer. Anyway, there is a way around that one. The free SatNov, however is a nightmare. It is unbelievably slow, disconnects constantly and to get a navigation is almost impossible. If you have to subscribe to it and pay for it, then there are a million better gadgets than this one. Stay away from it, it is absolutely crap.

I was some what annoyed when I used my N95's sat nav and was charged for the privilage! I was not impressed when my bill came through only to find that the 3 hour car journey that I took using it cost me a significant chunk of my wages due to the network charging me for the use. Have since gone out and bought a in car sat nav unit which is cheaper in the long run.
