25 Google Nexus 7 tips

CNET How To

So you've heard of the Nexus 7 and you're interested in buying one. And who wouldn't? This powerful 7-inch quad-core Android tablet, which runs the very latest version of Google's operating system, Jelly Bean, dramatically undercuts the prices of competitor tabs, at just £160.

Once you've got it in your palm, you're going to want to get the best out if it, and that's what this guide is all about. While popular opinion says this mini tablet was made to compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire (which has yet to be launched in the UK despite selling in the US since autumn 2011), more than the Apple iPad, the Nexus 7 is far more versatile.

When you first activate your device

1. Setting up your Google account
As part of the set-up guide built into the Nexus 7, you'll be asked to enter your Google account details, or create a new one. You can, of course, use your tablet without an account but you'll have access to more services with one.

2. Install Jelly Bean 4.1.1
Within an hour of activating your shiny new tablet, you'll be offered an update to the very latest operating system. Just tap 'OK' on this and the ensuing prompts and sit back while it takes care of business.

3. Get your freebies
The Nexus 7 comes with a few digital freebies. As you open the Play store client, you'll be notified that you have £15 credit to spend on anything you like, such as apps, books or movie rentals. Speaking of which, while we in the UK can't purchase films on Google Play, Nexus 7 owners are given Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon (to be streamed) in the Play Movies application.

4. Set your screen brightness
If you go into the Settings application and tap 'Display', you'll find a slider where you can manually set the screen brightness or choose to have the brightness adjusted automatically. Reducing the brightness will save power but will obviously make it harder to see. Bear in mind that the Nexus 7 uses an LCD screen, so using dark colours will not save energy as it would on an OLED display. Read this guide if you'd like to squeeze more battery life out of your Google Nexus 7.

5. Download offline maps

Download offline maps

The Nexus 7 has GPS and comes with Google Maps navigation, but it doesn't have a mobile data connection. So, while you're connected to your home Wi-Fi, find the offline maps option and download areas that you'll likely be travelling in.

6. Choose your widgets

Choose your widgets

The Nexus 7's user interface is much like that of any Android phone and includes five home screens. Open your app grid, and browse through the widgets by tapping the corresponding tab at the top. Once a widget is placed, a long-press allows you to reposition it, and if the widget has a blue outline while being moved, it can also be resized (see above).

Essential apps

7. Rotate your home screen

Rotate your home screen

The Nexus 7's home screens are fixed to portrait orientation, even though other apps will rotate. Install Rotate to give you full rotation control over home screens and apps.

8. Camera Launcher for Nexus 7

Camera Launcher for Nexus 7

Because the Nexus 7 doesn't have a main rear-facing camera, the Android camera app has been hidden. If you want to take photographs and video with the front-facing camera, you'll need the Camera Launcher for Nexus 7 by Modaco.

9. Backup your Apps
If you ever have to reset your Nexus 7, it will be a problem to remember all of your apps. If you install AppBrain, you can synchronise a list of all of your apps to the cloud, which you can recall after you reset your device.

10. Make calls with Skype
The Nexus 7 isn't a mobile phone, but you can install Skype to make voice or video calls with the front-facing camera.

11. Install an office suite
While you can install Google Drive and edit your documents in the cloud, it requires a constant Internet connection, which isn't always possible. There are plenty of offline office suites on the Play store and it's worth investing in one if you need to work on the move.

12. Amazon Kindle
While Google is keen to push its own ebook platform, Amazon Kindle is the ebook brand available on the most platforms, and you may already be a Kindle customer.

13. Even more reading apps
The Nexus 7 is an ideal size to use as a reading device -- and not just for ebooks. If you want to read saved articles, get Pocket. To access your news feeds there is Google Reader, and if you like your news to be more curated, then try Flipboard or Google Currents.

14. Social networks
Whether you want to keep track of what your friends are doing, or share all the great content you're discovering with your Nexus 7, you'll need social networking apps. Google Plus comes pre-installed, but if you want to use the other social networks, then grab Twitter, Facebook, TweetDeck or TweakDeck.

Setting up for entertainment

15. Use Google Music

Use Google Music

The built-in Android music app is Play Music. Not only can it play music stored on your device, it can also stream tunes you've stored in the cloud. Visit the Google Music help page to find out how to upload tracks from your computer (PC/Mac/Linux) to your Google account.

16. Alternative video players
The Play Movies application has relatively poor support for the range of video formats you may already have in your collection. To view content you already own, there are third-party players out there that can turn your Nexus 7 into a great little video player: VPlayer, DicePlayer, MX Player and also the official Plex app.

17. Sync with your desktop

Sync with your desktop

Unlike earlier Android devices, the Nexus 7 will not appear as a USB mass storage device. Instead, it appears as a 'Media Transfer Protocol' (MTP) device. Windows has native support for this and most music applications on Linux support this protocol too. If you use a Mac, you'll need the Android MTP agent. Windows users can use Windows Media Player to detect their Nexus 7 and transfer music, though many third-party apps support this as well.

18. Turn the Nexus 7 into a DLNA server
One criticism levelled against the Nexus 7 is that it does not have an HDMI port for playing content on a TV set. One way around this, if you have a DLNA-compatible TV, is to install a DLNA server application (such as BubbleUPnP). Then you can use your TV to wirelessly browse and view all of the content you've stored on your Nexus 7.

Accessories to buy

19. USB keyboard and host cable
You can use the Nexus 7 as a work tool. If you can find a USB host cable (that is, a micro-USB to female type-A adaptor, also known as USB OTG), the Nexus 7 will allow you to plug in an ordinary keyboard.

20. Bluetooth keyboard
If you prefer a wireless solution, the Nexus 7 supports Bluetooth input devices, and so any Bluetooth keyboard will work with this tablet too.

21. A tablet stand

A tablet stand

Unless you buy a keyboard that will also hold the tablet in an angled position, you'll need something to prop it up while typing, or even watching videos. There are plenty of inexpensive iPad stands on eBay that will work perfectly with the Nexus 7. I use one of these.

22. Cases
If you intend to carry your Nexus 7 around, you need something to protect it. While it's still early days for the accessory market, you can already find a range of items, from foam pouches to leather folio cases. If you need to work on the move, you might want to wait for the release of the official Bluetooth keyboard case though.

23. Stylus

Stylus

Another handy tool to help you work quickly on your tablet is a capacitive stylus. While using a finger is simple and visceral, a stylus can give you a little more speed and precision if you have a lot of work to do.

Power user tips

24. Enable Developer Options

Enable Developer Options

If you're curious about how your tablet actually works, delving into this area of the Settings application reveals all sorts of interesting activity. For example, it can display how Android processes touch inputs, or overlay on screen the current CPU processes.

25. Root your Nexus 7
By granting yourself 'root' privileges on your device (this may void your warranty), you can run a whole new range of applications that won't run on 'vanilla' Android devices, such as mounting a USB flash drive, changing your ROM or installing ad blockers. Check out this guide if you'd like to root your Google Nexus 7.

Upload tracks from your computer (PC/Mac/Linux) to your Google account. This feature is not available in UK you might want to add.

Great article but noticed an error . "11. Install an office suite - While you can install Google Drive and edit your documents in the cloud, it requires a constant Internet connection, which isn't always possible."
- Not correct. There is an "Available Offline" setting for each document. Launch Drive, find your document, then click on the circle with an arrow at the end and click the check box "Available Offline". You can then take your Google drive documents with you.

Generally decent article with a handful of bad recommendations. For example for the following, here are some better recommendations:

4. Set your screen brightness. Instead of messing with the display settings ad slider, just put the power control widget already in the device on one of the desktops. it's display button will give you different screen brightness settings.

9. Back Up your apps. no need to install app brain or anything else. Google Play already remembers all the apps you have installed and, if you have more than one android device, what device they are installed in. The only apps you should ever need to back up are those that are side loaded from outside Google play.

10. Make Calls with Skype. Good suggestion, but you can also expand on that by making calls with Google Voice and video conferencing with Hangouts.

12. Amazon Kindle. This is only a preference and it is only good if you are a kindle user. You can also download the Play Books, Nook and Kobo apps, as well as any number of 3rd party readers. In fact, my favorite reader by FAR (and IMHO the most powerful and flexible) is Aldiko Book reader. It will read just about any format and doesn't lock you into a single store.

17. Sync with your desktop. Incorrect. the Galaxy nexus behaves in the exact same way. Also while some Linux Music apps have MTP support, to date I have yet to find a Linux MTP client that allows you to just open the file directory in an MTP only android device. This means that dragging and dropping files of any kind is a pain unless you are on windows or Mac. Google should really release an MTP client for Linux. the MTP client for MacOS is also a little wonky. The best implementation thus far is the Windows one. That said, you should not have to Sync with any desktop. your device syncs with Google automatically. The only reason for an average user to plug into a desktop is to transfer files quickly and in bulk.

You don't need to install any Rotate app to rotate your screen. Middle of the pull down menu at top is a little icon with a lock and circular arrows, tap to unlock and you'd just enabled screen rotation!

Santeno's avatar

Santeno 22 August, 2012 00:27

anonymous you are wrong. the app rotation icon enables/disables rotation in running applications, not on the desktop. In order to get the desktop to rotate you need to unlock the feature in the Nexus 7 (and in the Galaxy Nexus). The feature is native to Android, but Google disables it in the Phone UI (not in the Tablet UI), so you need a 3rd party app to enable it.

MTP with Ubuntu works fine for me. I followed the instructions here:
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/how-to-connect-your-android-ice-cream-sandwich-phone-to-ubuntu-for-file-access
The only problem is that all the listed commands are in uppercase, so can't simply be copied & pasted. It works well though.

I purchased a Nexus 7 about 2 months ago. Everything was fine until today. It gave me a warning of low battery, I was driving and ignored it until I was in a safe position to charge. When a connected the charger it seemed not to charge. I left it for a full hour and nothing. Then I used a universal charger and pressed the power button and volumen button at the same time and got a prompt, but it went dark in a minute. I've been charging for more than an hour now and nothing comes up but I noticed a very faint light in the backround. Can anybody help me?

If you're having the problem where the Nexus 7 seems to be dead, hold the power button for a long time - sometimes 30 seconds to a minute. Eventually it should come back on!

I've just got 'my precious' today and man am I impressed. It's so quick it blows me away. I have a tablet already on Honeycomb and a Galaxy Note on ICS but Jelly Bean is superspeed compared to them. Very pleased with purchase and had already done most of these installs before reading the article.

I'm in the UK and I cannot play the free Transformers movie. I get a message saying...not available in your country. Why is this? And why are they selling it in the UK if most of the stuff doesn't work here?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 8 October, 2012 18:11

I have the same issue with transformers. It worked at first now saying not available in the country. I was looking forward to watching this

Bought a nexus 7 in the UK a week ago, I skipped the intro stuff in a hurry to start playing, and now can't seem to access my free £15 play credit - how do I get my hands on the wonga?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 October, 2012 22:57

Same problem here, I get a message saying the licence cannot be verified for the transformers movie. Bought the tablet in the uk at Gatwick, but couldn't turn it on until I reached the state's, now I can't seem to access the free credit either, thought I'd wait until getting home to make sure it was in pounds not dollars so didn't access the market whilst I was there, I'm sure I had a message saying I could do it later but can't see how to do so

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 October, 2012 14:40

Regarding the free transformers film, you need to download it first! I had the "Not available in the UK" error, then clicked the little Pin icon and it downloaded no problem :-)

can someone tell me if the nexus 7 is worth buying in the uk?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 October, 2012 15:31

For anyone wanting to buy the Nexus 7 wait until the nexus 7 32gb version is out, if rumours are to be believed it will be £199.99 which is same price as 16gb tablet is right now. Just got to wait for the Google launch as has been postponed until hurricane has passed by, apparently.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 October, 2012 15:35

If you have an expandable wallet then you may want to wait for the Nexus 10 which will come out the same time as the 7 32gb tablet, again if rumours are to be believed, as for price top of the range is going to be hitting £300.

I'm afraid your wrong the drop down box DOES enable/disable full rotation. Having just bought the 32gig version I know that to be true. I was told by the store when I went back its a new upgrade, don't know if that's due to 4.2 jellybean as opposed to 4.1 but it clearly has a auto rotate lock/unlock option in the drop down box

I am thinking about buying a 3G Nexus 7 . I have a couple of questions.

Is the transformers film still available free if I buy one now?
Also I notice on the Google play shop they have covers available as accessories for the nexus 7 but they say 'Wifi only'. Now I can't find any differences in dimensions between the wifi versions and the 3G version on the play site (or anywhere else for that matter) What gives?

Thanks in advance.

With Android 4.2 google have thought it would be funny to hide the Developer options screen in the Settings. This means you cannot enable usb debugging to communicate with your device. To show the Developers options screen do the following:

Goto Settings, About tablet and tap your finger on the the 'Build number' text at the bottom 7 times (not too fast).
When you have tapped 3 times you will be given a countdown of taps until you become a 'developer'.
Once you are told you are now a developer you can go back to the Settings screen and can see Developer options.
You can now go into Developer options and enable usb debugging.

Are we able to get the £15 free apps in the UK. I have just purchased the NEXUS 7 32GB and wondered how to claim the credit. Device is superb. I have put around 7GB of mp3 stuff on the hard drive using OTG and the Nexus 7 Media Importer app. Worked like a dream and music using phones sounds pretty good. Well pleased with my purchase.

With movies - I used Freemake to convert my Avatar DVD to mp4. I then installed MX app and ran the movie. Looks really good on the screen. To get my file to the Nexus 7 - I put my mp4 on to an SD card. Put the SD card into a card reader, connected that to my OTG cable, connected the OTG to the Nexus and the Nexus read the file, uploaded it and I then saved it. Really is quite easy to transfer files that way.

Why would I bother with 'AppBrain'.

The Nexus 7 (by default) will Backup your information, including a list of apps and any data stored within apps in your Google Play store account.

Easy enough to log into your google play store and find the list. It's a tab at the top on their main page.
Thanks though
