The Sennheiser headphones brand is just as regarded by CNET UK readers. In 2011, the Sennheiser CX 500s topped our list of headphones you're craving, voted for by visitors to the website.
This was despite them being three years old at the time -- testament to the fact that they've yet to be bettered. And in 2010, we declared the £1,240 HD 800s sounded more like a set of full-sized speakers than any other headphones we'd heard to date. More recently, its Momentum headphones garnered a glowing write-up and CNET Editors' Choice award for combining a stylish design with clear, accurate sound.
Based in Germany, Sennheiser was founded in the wake of World War II in 1945, and quickly established a niche specialising in microphones, eventually branching out into headphones and sound systems.
A little-known fact is Sennheiser's claim to manufacturing the first baby monitor in 1962, named the 'Babysitter'. It also came up with the world's first digital infrared headphones in 1993 and won an Emmy Award for pioneering developments in RF wireless technology in 1996. Not many tech firms can boast that.
