Asus is the English brand name of the Taiwanese electronics company ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, or translated literally, Great Splendid Computer Corporation.
Great and splendid indeed -- while Asus is primarily known for its range of laptops, and increasingly, its superb efforts in the tablet market, it also makes components for rival manufacturers such as Dell and HP.
The company was formed in 1989 by four engineers who previously worked for Acer. The name Asus derives from Pegasus, the winged equine of Greek mythology fame -- it was cannily shortened by the founding fathers in order to gain a higher position in alphabetical listings.
Just like Acer, Asus partnered with a luxury Italian sports car brand in 2006 to produce a range of expensive motor-themed laptops. The Asus-Automobili Lamborghini VX7, for example, boasted an extreme design, with grilles and brake lights, as well a price tag to bring you out in a cold sweat.
