TomTom XL IQ Routes edition Europe
If you can accept the lack of Bluetooth, Traffic Message Channel receiver and text-to-speech support, the TomTom XL IQ Routes edition Europe is a solid sat-nav. Beware though -- the price quickly adds up if you start buying extras
TomTom GO 940 Live
The TomTom GO 940 Live is one of the most expensive sat-navs we've come across, both in terms of initial and ongoing costs. Yet, despite it being top of the range, it still suffers from some flaws. The device's wealth of features compensates for this to a degree, however, and professional and company car drivers will find that many new services prove a real boon
Garmin nuvi 765T
Appearance-wise, the Garmin nuvi 765T is almost identical to last year's nuvi 760. It's only when you look beneath the surface that you can see where modern features have been included, such as the motorway lane guidance, road-speed warnings, 3D landmarks and geo-tagged image support. They're not without flaws though -- a firmware upgrade was required to fix one of the teething problems we encountered
TomTom One XL
Whether you want a simple, out-of-the-box sat nav or a smart, flexible companion for complex journeys, the TomTom One XL Europe or TomTom One XL Regional will fit the bill. It's not cheap and lacks the flash media functionality of some rivals, but when it comes to pure navigation, TomTom is still the GPS benchmark
Navigon 5110
What the Navigon 5110 lacks in multimedia functionality it makes up for with some excellent innovative features. Its Lane Assistant with Reality View is a godsend for those who struggle with complex motorway junctions
TomTom GO 920T
The TomTom GO 920T re-establishes the company as the top dog for GPS navigation. Its widescreen format has lost weight from its 910 predecessor and it now focuses on the navigational aides rather than multimedia gimmicks. As a result you have voice recognition that works, text-to-speech throughout the interface and a TMC/FM receiver for routing around traffic problems
TomTom One Europe
Offering just the navigation essentials and accurate directions, the TomTom One Europe is an affordable and easy-to-use in-car GPS device for first-time buyers or anyone who wants a no-frills navigation system
Medion GoPal P4425
The Medion GoPal P4425 certainly brings something new to the table with its fingerprint reader and while its software takes some time to get going and its GPS signal strength could be better, it does provide a wealth of additional features for your hard-earned cash, including western European mapping, text-to-speech, a safety camera database and an FM/TMC receiver
HTC TyTN
This is an extremely well-featured Pocket PC that also has mobile phone capabilities. HTC has made sure that it's balanced features with power so the TyTN doesn't leave you hanging when you need to access applications like Skype. It is definitely not meant for the light user and is geared towards people who need a lot of features on the go. Due to its size and weight, however, you'll need a bag if you're going to carry it around
HP iPAQ 114 Classic
If you look at the HP iPAQ 114 Classic for what it is -- a traditional PDA with strong performance and a large 89mm (3.5-inch) screen -- then it does fit the bill quite nicely. However with the transflective screen, this could have been an excellent opportunity to include a built-in GPS receiver as standard
