If you'd told us five years ago that wireless capability was going to be the next big innovation in mobile-phone chargers, we'd have scoffed at the notion like the arch cads we are. Our response probably would have been along the lines of: "What's the point? We're perfectly happy with the wall charger that came in the box."

That's probably not a unique sentiment, but Powermat, among other companies, apparently couldn't give two hoots. Both the Powermat Home & Office Mat, which we reviewed recently, and the Powermat Portable Mat can power your phone without requiring you to connect it to a wall charger, although neither system is entirely wireless. The Portable Mat is available for around £70 and differs from the Home & Office Mat only in that it has a compact, foldable design.
