Typical price: £30
What is it: Freeview recorder with 160GB hard drive and on-demand video features
What we think: It's got some annoying tics, but some great features and a lovely interface make this is an absolute bargain for customers of BT

What I like:

What I don't like:
No Freeview in my area, no HD content (yet), compression
Review:
A nice lady called me from BT: she offered to cut my broadband costs by £3/month & send me a V-Box, although I do not live in a Freeview area. I already have a home hub, which so far has been reliable, connected to an internet radio, broadband talk phone, an iMac & iBook & a laptop running Linux. The V-Box cost me NOTHING, & worked straight out of the box. I set everything up via SCART, & then swapped to a nice new HDMI cable, which improves picture enormously. Sound is output to my stereo (no surround sound due to space!). Picture is reasonable, on a par with DVD, although fast movement can be a bit blocky. I haven't tested football on demand yet, as there weren't any decent games on the weekend! Sound quality on a par with Sky box. BT need to roll out HDTV as soon as. I don't know how much bandwidth this requires, but some of us are lucky enough to live near an exchange. IPTV is in its infancy, & this box is a great start. Roll-on 21CN..... Meanwhile, if you are already with BT, you can't really go wrong. The kit is free, the setup is painless & films are the same money as the video shop.
