Typical Price £1,000
What we think: LG deserves credit for sidestepping the format war, but the steep price and lack of support for proper HD DVD menus are its undoing

Hello I'm Ian Morris with cnet.co.uk and this is multi-talented LG BH100, also known as Super Multi Blue, because it can play both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs.
The styling of this player is a bit different to what we are used to. The top is finished in a matt black metal, but the front and sides have a shiny piano black finish [show]. At the top there are five buttons, one to turn the unit on, as well as controls for ejecting the disc tray, play and pause, stop and there is even a button to change the resolution [show], although that will only work when the player is in stop mode.
The front of the player is bare, with only an illuminated LG logo [show], disc tray [show] and very simple display. [show]
To the rear there are the usual connections including HDMI, digital optical audio out, component video out and coaxial digital audio out. There are also analogue 5.1 audio outputs. [show all]
While the BH100 can play both high definition formats, HD DVD support feels like a bit of an afterthought. While Blu-ray menus all appear as they would in any Blu-ray player, the menus on HD DVD discs are replaced by a simpler menu designed by LG [show] which makes finding a specific special feature is particularly difficult.
I'm Ian Morris, and this is the first high definition dual-format player in the world, the LG BH100.
Picture quality is great on both HD DVD and Blu-ray and if this player cost £500 instead of £1,000 we'd recommend it. As it is, however, it's just too much to pay for something that doesn't support proper HD DVD menus
