What is it: Profile 1.0 Blu-ray player
What we think: Lacking profile 1.1 and 2.0 support, the player is slightly redeemed by great picture and sound quality

We like:
Picture quality; sound quality; styling
We don't like:
Price; front panel feels fragile; no included HDMI cable; no profile 1.1 or 2.0 support; did we mention price yet?
You might also need:
HDMI cable; Blu-ray discs; HD TV
CNET.co.uk judgement:
There is no compelling reason to buy this player over a PlayStation 3: it's too expensive, doesn't support profile 1.1 or 2.0, and costs more than pretty much every Blu-ray player on the market. The picture and sound quality are, however, excellent, which makes it a good player with a silly price tag

Sony BDP-S500 Blu-ray player: Where's the interactivity?
The BDP-S500 is Sony's step-up Blu-ray player, and it boasts a host of cool features, not least a truly magnificent motorised front panel. Is it better than a PS3 though?
