Typical price: £139
What is it: Affordable universal DVD recorder
What we think: Limited specification but affordable, easy-to-use and both the recording and playback performance is impressive

We like:
Multi-format compatibility; DV input; easy-to-use, accurate recordings; impressive DVD playback
We don't like:
Ordinary design; analogue tuner only; no RGB Scart input
You might also need:
Component video cable; RGB Scart cable; optical audio cable; Freeview tuner
CNET UK judgement:
Panasonic's DMR-ES15 is an ideal entry-level recorder for anyone looking to upgrade their old VCR. The absence of a Freeview tuner will discourage digital TV users -- but compatibility, usability, recording and playback performance are otherwise excellent

A terrific machine, and very affordable if you're called Bill Gates or you've just had a lottery win -- but rather pricey for everyone else

Top-notch picture and sound quality make this a system to lust after. The only real catch is the price
