Typical price: £360
What is it: DVD home cinema system with 2.1 speakers, plus DivX and SACD support
What we think: Good value for money, the HTS8000S is a novel system for those without the space or inclination for proper surround-sound speakers

We like:
Elegant design; plays SACD and DivX formats; good audio quality for the price
We don't like:
Unsightly subwoofer; lots of cables; no S-video output
You might also need:
Component cable, optical to coaxial adaptor, headphone to phono audio cable
CNET.co.uk judgement:
The 2.1 home cinema category has thrown up some sleek designs of late, and the Philips HTS8000S fits into this group perfectly. The system matches a flat screen perfectly, and while we don't like the subwoofer, it produces a rounded and powerful sound that almost convinces it's surround sound

Home cinema systems with cool features
Home cinema systems have come a long way from being the poor man's surround-sound setup. The four systems featured here have features that set them apart from separates, and they're all from quality manufacturers. Only one is an actual 5.1 system, but they all have genuinely interesting features that make them worth a look for the bedroom

Philips HTS8000S: Flat-packed home cinema
Philips' HTS8000S isn't a DVD system that plays by the rules -- everything from the player to the subwoofer is as flat as an LCD TV, while the system itself will spin both DVD movies and SACD music
