Typical price: £120
What is it: A 40GB USB hard disk which can display movies, photos and music on a regular TV
What we think: The Mediabox's TV menu system is utilitarian and UNIX-like, but it all works and it works fast. The bundled remote control is invaluable

We like:
Compact size; attractive chassis; fast operation
We don't like:
Clunky TV menu system; badly translated manual
You might also need:
A composite to SCART adaptor will ensure you're prepared for almost every video socket life can throw at you
CNET.co.uk judgement:
It might be brash about it, but the Mediabox is a fast way of displaying loads of videos and photos without carrying a laptop. The TV interface is crude and the MP3 player prehistorically basic. But for all its faults, we loved the Mediabox for its snappy, no-frills playback of video
