The battery- or mains-powered AE5200 portable radio offers brilliant design touches, good looks and excellent FM reception for a reasonable price. Its DAB performance could be better and it eats batteries quickly, but it's an appealing machine nonetheless

The portable XDR-S10 is an attractive DAB and FM radio that will suit those who like value simplicity and don't want to spend too much. Although its FM reception leaves something to be desired, its DAB performance is great, and its sound quality is good, so it's definitely worth a look

For gardeners, travellers and those of an eco-friendly bent, the sun-powered solarDAB radio is a great option. Although it lacks an FM tuner, its small dimensions and low weight mean it's highly portable, and its fully charged battery will provide up to 27 hours of listening time

Intempo Fusion preview

The Intempo Fusion is a £99 DAB/FM-enabled iPod dock for the bedside, with a built-in sub woofer and portable design. It'll be on sale from mid October, but we got an exclusive pre-production model and got to test it out. It's definitely ideal for quiet bedroom listening, we found, as louder and heavier sounds weren't as good as softer ones

PURE Digital One Elite

For a relatively low price, the British manufacturer's One Elite DAB radio offers a heap of useful features, including live-radio pausing and rewinding. It's solidly built, easy to use and offers good sound quality with the spoken word, although it's average at handling music. Overall, it's a lovely radio

The iPod doesn't have a radio, let alone DAB, so an iPod speaker system with a digital radio built in has to be a good idea -- Intempo's RDI docking system is that good idea, and it offers a sleek design, good reception and impressive sound quality for the price

PURE Digital's Chronos II is an excellent DAB radio and alarm clock. Its looks maybe simple, but it's very easy to use and a doddle to set up too. Sound quality is good and you should have no problem picking up the major DAB stations in your area

The Intempo TRS-01 DAB radio is small and lightweight so it's easy to move around. It can be powered by four AA batteries, which last a good while, or through the mains. The TRS-01 is available in a variety of colours to suit all tastes and reception is great for such a small set

The Gemini 19 bedside DAB is a useful fellow who will appeal to anyone who needs a radio to wake them up with a daily dose of Brahms. Its Classic FM button is something of a cheek, but its reception is up to the usual DAB standard and its audio quality perfectly fine for drowsy mornings

Roberts Rambler RD-76

Robert's DAB formula is an appealing one: take an old design from the catalogue, strip out the insides and replace the analogue circuitry with brand-new digital components. This continues with the RD-76, which is available in a rainbow of colours, and sounds perfectly acceptable for when you're doing the washing up
