Apple iPod shuffle (3rd-generation, 4GB)
The third-generation iPod shuffle is the smallest MP3 player currently available, and only slightly larger than a paper clip. While its unobtrusive design feels sturdy and the voice feature that tells you what you're listening to is useful, quirky controls mean it won't be for everyone

Apple iPod classic (2nd gen)
Apple's done it again -- its new 120GB iPod classic is a cut above the rest. This edition has more features, such as the Genius playlist tool, and allows you to watch very high-quality video on its 640x480-pixel resolution screen. As with all iPods, you'll have to stick with iTunes, and spring for better headphones, but still, this gadget rocks

Apple iPod touch (2nd gen)
Apple has given its second-generation iPod touch everything it's got. It's hard to imagine, but the design is even better and its features are responsive as ever -- all this despite a price cut. It's got podcast support, video playback, a Web browser, photo viewer and an email reader, to name a few

Apple iPod nano (4th gen)
Apple seems to release new iPod models every other day, but this newest iPod nano really does impress. At just 6mm thick, it's the thinnest one they've ever made -- but there's more to it than that. New features include the Genius playlist tool, tilt sensor and capabilities for vision-impaired people

Apple iPod classic
Coming in 80GB and 160GB capacities, the new Apple iPod classic can hold a massive archive of music and video. There's no need to pick and choose which music goes with you, even if you rip CDs at the very highest lossless quality. The interface has been given a lovely Cover Flow makeover, too

Apple iPod shuffle (2nd generation, green)
The new third-generation iPod shuffle is pretty much the same as the second-generation design -- same 1GB memory, cute dock and integrated clip -- but now it's available in metallic blue, purple, green, red and silver and it costs less, at just £49

Apple iPod nano (3rd gen, video)
With its wider, square design and its video playback capability, the latest iPod nano is more like a 'light' version of the iPod classic. Despite its changes, the nano is still one of the smallest, thinnest and most exquisitely designed MP3 players on the market

Apple iPod touch
Meet the iPhone's slimmer baby brother, the iPod touch. Despite its demure size -- both in stature and in memory -- it still manages to cram in Web browsing and iTunes over Wi-Fi. This is an unquestionably cool product that continues Apple's legacy of sleek, innovative design

Apple iPod Shuffle (2nd gen, 1GB)
The latest iPod Shuffle is a decent player that offers a sleek, compact form factor in five shiny colours, an excessively simple user interface and a low price. Fans of ultraportable gadgets will no doubt be drawn to it, but audiophiles beware

Apple iPod (80GB, video)
The '5.5-gen' iPod -- wiser and more able than its one-year-old predecessor -- gains many incremental improvements, including a brighter screen and better video battery life, but probably the most appealing aspect is the tantalising price, especially for the 30GB version

Apple iPod nano (2nd generation, 4GB)
The 4GB iPod nano number two features a remodelled, slimmed-down casing and much improved battery life, while retaining the functionality of its earlier incarnation. The 4GB version comes in a range of bright colours and the compact package includes all that you might need for basic use

Apple iPod U2 Special Edition (30GB, video)
The latest iPod U2 shares most of its characteristics with the fifth-generation video iPod but boasts a few key differences. The most noticeable is the Ferrari-red scrollwheel contrasted against the black body, but it also has the signatures of all four U2 band members laser-etched in the iPod's shiny, dark metal rear casing

Apple iPod Hi-Fi
Though we initially balked at the price, the £249 Hi-Fi gives a very solid performance at high volumes and can deliver a much more audacious punch than other stereo systems of a similar size. If the majority of your music listening is done via the iPod, then the loss of a CD player and tuner won't bother you

Apple iPod (60GB, video)
As a music player, Apple's new iPod is peerless -- beautiful, easy to use and incredibly thin. As a video player, it has much room for improvement, particularly if you don't live in the US, where content is much more plentiful, but it's certainly kickstarted the portable video market
