I'm Nate Lanxon and today we're taking a look at the Baylis Eco Media Player -- an MP3 and video player that recharges itself without being connected to a power source or computer. Ever.
It does this by using a dynamo, connected to this hand crank. It takes about a minute of furious cranking to charge it up enough to play roughly 40 minutes of audio. If your dreadlocks aren't quite fully finished yet and you still use a computer, you can jack it in via USB and it'll charge for about 9 hours, giving you enough power for 20 hours of music.
But it's not just music. The Eco player also plays video. Although it's a bit rubbish -- and although you'll only get a little bit of video into the player's 2GB memory -- it's still got potential. I think one of the ideal applications for this player is with students who bugger off around Africa to "find themselves" by teaching kids English and getting bitten by snakes. On here, they can store video of their cat, should they miss it, while away for several months, and of course their favourite travelling music, like... Bob Dylan, or Napalm Death.
It's also got a voice recorder, an FM radio and check this out: it's got a torch for crying out loud! Now I don't review torches, so I'm not judging its quality of light, but this would seriously help me wrench the gigantic spider of my face in the middle of the night, which in my experience can only be a good thing.
There's one more use too: it comes with adapters for charging mobile phones from major manufacturers, including Nokia and Sony Ericsson. The cables connect to the USB port on the side and cranking the handle then outputs power to your handset. You can see my battery filling up here. I don't know exactly how long it will take to fully charge an empty battery, but I'm sure it'll give your phone enough juice to call for a helicopter ambulance when an alligator bites your pack mule's legs off.
The Baylish Eco Media Player will cost you about 140 quid, and it's on sale now. If you're planning on circumnavigating the globe, your going to want to ditch that iPod and get a real travellers MP3 player. One with torch on it!!
I'm Nate Lanxon and this is the Baylis Eco Media Player.
An extremely niche product and as a result of its high price, probably only one for campers, travellers, the seriously pro-green or anyone desiring music when they can't guarantee mains power exists. Costly, but too cute to dislike
