What is it: Home cinema micro system
What we think: Attractive and decent for the price, but promises more than it delivers

We like:
Design and build; decent speaker specification; loads of connectivity; HDMI output; price
We don't like:
Average audio and video performance; annoyingly lengthy start-up time
Also known as:
Philips MCD908/05
You might also need:
HDMI cable
CNET.co.uk judgement:
The Philips MCD908 is an attractively priced and nicely designed system. But where it excels in style, it loses in performance, which is distinctly average. That advantage is that it's priced within reach of almost any home cinema newbie and as such will not disappoint. Just don't expect an audiophile hi-fi like it promises to be

Hands-on with the Philips MCD908 home cinema micro system
Philips's MCD908 combines a valve-based preamp with a solid-state amplifier to create an interesting home cinema micro system. With DVD upscaling and a powerful sound, will you be getting a bargain for £239?
